+Alan Noorkoiv Absolutely agree. I love how a single shot comes quick to target. Also taking weight out of the ass just makes it front heavy. Shooting buckshot out of it now will be worse after losing all that weight and I'm not sure I'd like trying to reload that thing quickly with a pistol grip.

The factory furniture (with a decelerator pad of your choice) helps in absorbing the energy of any 12 ga. shell you run through it. Throw away the ATI furniture. It's aftermarket "tacticicool" garbage. Paint or finish the original wood in a finish / pattern that's appealing to your eye, and it'll be as comfortable of shoot as any 12 ga. can be. It'll keep your cost down as well as make your scattergun "manufacturer like" efficient. Though it may end up a back pack gun, you don't want it too light. it'll knock you on your a$$ every time you pull the trigger. Happy trails, tight groups and safety first. Thanks for sharing.

I have a Savage Stevens break action gun that is about 70 years old. It is a great SHTF weapon, especially with the sub cal inserts I bought. Just remember, that the pistol adapters (.22 and 9mm) are about useless in accuracy. No optics / sights can overcome a 2" barrel. The more expensive 7" adapters are better, but they're big and bulky. The .410 is perfect. And for God's sake, get that plastic off that shotgun! You shouldn't try to shave too much weight off a 12 ga.
@mzmadmike

With the Stevens, just buy spare barrels in other calibers and they usually fit with a tiny bit of filing, if anything.

My choice was a Savage M24 campers companion in 22 LR over 20 ga. It has short barrels and ammo storage in the but stock. It also comes in a storage pouch that can be tied to a back pack. Add a couple of shell sprinklers and you are pretty well set.

Heres a silly suggestion, Buy an Over /Under 20" barrel Akkar Churchill 12G They have a ribbed barrel, You can buy rifle sights that bolt onto the rib, (Legal requirement here in AU for deer hunting with shotguns and slugs)The Akkar also has removable/interchangeable chokes, ( i use Improved Modified for Slugs), Buy an ammo belt to take 12G ammo that has a pouch built in, You can then carry your adapters in the ammo belt, Tools, Spare chokes and sub-cal ammo go in the pouch,You now have a gun that can be broken down to no more than a 20" package in seconds, and re-assembled in the same time, Buy an ex-mil tactical vest with a 20" or longer, back pack pouch, to store it in,(you can buy these with a water bladder in them) and with a couple front mounted ammo pouches for carrying basic survival equipment, ie: first aid kit, fire starter,Water purification tablets, Radio,12G Flares, etc.

+BushmasterXM15E2S I believe the opposite is true. In the case of this single shot top loader the original configuration was the most ergonomic. Most ergonomic to bring to target, and the most ergonomic to reload. Weight distribution was better and recoil will most likely be more severe now. This is a hunting weapon that can be used in a pinch for defense. Bolting on AR style equipment is ALL about how it looks. It sure as hell doesn't shoot better now.

I use a H&R that has a huge 10ga barrel under-bored to 12ga and rifled. The same 12ga adapters that you would use with the cheaper H&R single shot smooth bore guns works in them just fine. They are already drilled and tapped and in fact come with a Weaver base already installed. I have no clue what type of insane price they sell for now but they used to sell at Walmart for $99-$149. If you have to buy new might as well get one that is already drilled and tapped for a scope if you intend to use it as something other then a "scatter gun". If I use Sabot Slugs I can put 3 rounds into a 2 inch circle at 100 yards shooting off hand no rest, no shooting sticks or a bag etc....That is with a 3-9X scope though. I have to imagine that if I used a 7 inch to 9 inch rifled adapter that I would get accuracy at least on par with a scoped hand gun. At the end of the day if you plan on doing something like using an adapter on a shotgun you might as well plan it out enough so that it all works out. Anyone with enough money to waste on an AR platform should be able to do a shotgun and hand gun cartridge adapter with in their budget!!! It is different if you already have an old single shot shotgun just sitting around collecting dust to put it to use and go about modifying it. IF you actually have to buy something new though it really only makes sense to buy something off the shelf that will work great with out needing a new expensive stock or gunsmiths etc....

The best upgrade for survival that I have seen with these is the sleeve inserts that allow for multiple gauge shot and calibre bullets to be safely fired. Taking weight AWAY from a short shotgun is definitely going to make it even less comfortable when fired.

with the wood stock you can add a "dead mule" by filling the bolt recess hole with lead shot and a piece of duct tape. This will help reduce recoil significantly with the heavier loads.. The ATI stock has some great feature also. Adjustable length of pull etc. The ideal on the ghost ring sights is a good one no matter what stock option you go with.

Why so Angry??.. You have to know how to adapt and overcome there Micers, little Buddy. I enjoyed every minute of enhancing my H&R Topper 12ga. Survival Rifle/Shotgun.. Kinda' went like this: Cut the 12ga. barrel at 18" 1/2 in. and dropped it into a Choate Survival Stock/and Survival Forend.. "Sweet" compared to the knarly example in the video, as there is a hell of a lot of storage in the butt stock and forend, and when sealed off with a rubber stopper, the hand grip compartment is a delightful addition to the already generous storage compartments! "Choate Stocks" really did a nice job on the full handgrip. Fit and finish are superb, at steal at $35.00. That being said~I added Hi-viz custom sights both fore and aft, and had "Mag-na-Port"..Port it top and sides, making a 3"00 buck round a pleasure to shoot..then I added a six round shotgun sleeve to the buttstock, and finished it off with a nice short "Custom Cobra" sling, with quick detach swivels and an additional 4 round carrier in the widest part of the sling. and to finish it off, I bought 6 adapters to fire 8 separate assorted calibers, Just in case the World ran out of 12ga. shells during the "Zombie Pocyclipse" {1} 20ga. {2} 410ga. {3} 22mag. {4} 9mm. {5} 38. spec./357mag. {6}.44.spec./44.mag. All these adapters fit nicely into the generous buttstock compartment, with just enough room left over for a deluxe Swiss Victorinox Pocket knife with all the options!.. The Pistol grip was stuffed with Sutures&Needles and a small,..but extremely effective Pharmacy {nuff' said}.. as I was a Combat Medic in Vietnam. The forend provided ample room for a full vial of waterproof strike anywhere matches, prepackaged cotton tinder patches, soaked in kerosene. and a "Blast Match" striker~ with a dremill adjustment for prcise fit, lastly,.. 3oz. of shaved and chipped Magnesium strips.for those wet day/snow and a Blast Match striker, NO EXCUSES WHEN YOUR IN NEED OF A FIRE EH? To finnish... I have shot to date 100 rounds of all the above mentioned calibers and guages, WITH NARY A BOBBLE MATE !.. I do not intend to take on Seal Team-6 but~ I can accurately deal with most anything out to 75yds. ONE AT A TIME!! and mos importantly, I had a Capitol Time putting it together.

The 12 gauge is an awesome shtf weapon! It can fire so many different rounds especially with the modern pistol or rifle round inserts. Recently shot 1 with a 45/70 insert. Every bit as accurate as a rifle. Or a person can fire pistol rounds with the inserts as well.

I think there is a distinction to be made. When some people think "survival situation", they instinctively feel a need to pack a 20-30rd AR or 8-10rd pump action shotgun because in their mind they want to be ready for a "standoff" scenario where an armed mob or militia is trying to kill you. This might be necessary in a post-apocalypse situation, but the more likely survival scenario is a natural disaster where the police are no longer able to maintain law and order in the suburbs... thus necessitating a simpler standoff ("home defense") gun like a single-break shotty. If there is some prolonged post-apocalypse where ammo conservation is critical and you don't have all the guns to shoot it, the adapters can be a good functional reason for the single-break as well. In either case, I think shotguns AND rifles make you a "harder target", but in the open, others may perceive you as a threat that needs to be killed... which means concealment wins over firepower. The other "survival situation" that people think is likely is one where you and your family are forced to go into the wilderness and hunt wild game, but if you don't live near a wilderness with plenty of biodiversity to support a family, simply purchasing a 30-day supply of food and water and waiting for the disaster to pass might be a better strategy. If there is a zombie/nuclear/ecological apocalypse, then everyone will have much bigger problems than survival.

That's great! Beast! But if I was to look for a very packable, adaptable and great all around shot gun, I would go for the Keltec KSG. With it's capacity of 14 rounds of 2 3/4" 00 buck or slug 12 gauge goodness. Throw in the fact you can lock out the magazine tubes and manually load an adapter for .45 cal all the way down to .22 cal rim fire gives you the versatility of using what ever ammo is at hand. Add in the fact that the entire weapon system is 21" long makes it a great pack weapon.

Cutting the barrel to 18 inches would leave the user with a cylinder bore in which case a choke has to be installed unless the gun is strictly used as a defensive weapon. I think that Rem-chokes are the ones that fit these barrels best but I would go to the minimum of 20 inches which is the ideal on a 12ga shotgun to be used as a multipurpose gun. Shotgun barrels are long to aid with the swing but 20" with the proper choke will perform like a 28" barrel.

With a shell holder on the stock and a cartridge belt I can disappear into some wild country and have bear and mountain lion protection along with the ability to harvest rabbit, grouse or partridge. The rifling makes the pattern a little wacky at distance with the shot but allows me to law down some heavy lead chunks out to a distance if I need it to take down a dear, elk or stop a bear. With a man drawn travois carrying all the gear I can go for weeks in places I never see another human with with confidence I can protect myself and harvest some game to eat should the need arise.

The title is extremely misleading. You are not "building" anything here. Part 1?

It isn't a preference. It is simple. The thing is, you are not building anything in the video. It also says Shotgun and then you say Rifle. Sure I know you are placing adaptors into a shotgun, but you are not "BUILDING" anything. What purpose is it to ask me what I prefer? I bet I am not the only one to point this out to you either. If you don't know or have a clue, you need to get one. I also looked for part 2, and there was no part 2.

How does it sound when you shoot .22 ? Does the nearly 2 foot of 3/4 inch barrel after the adapter quiet it down much?

I owned a single shot 12 and a 12 gauge pump. I've since sold them both and kept my old NEF single shot 20 gauge. The only thing I've ever shot though these were deer slugs, and the 12 gauges were NOT enjoyable at all. Another reason to keep the 20 is the stores still have 20 gauge shot shells on their shelves. They don't have any 12's or 410's but they had plenty of 20 gauge. After all, what good is a firearm without ammo? I recently restored my old 20 gauge single shot and now she's a keeper. (I've owned it for forty years) I like the simplicity of a single shot and the lighter weight. Most of the time when I fired a second or third shot out of my 12 gauge pump at a running deer, I was just throwing my money away. The first shot is the most important one. It's like I told my wife when she took my single shot 20 deer hunting. I told her she only needed one shot, just make it count. She came back with a 12 point buck.

If you go with the old Stevens Model 94, you can get yourself barrels in .410, 20, 16, 12, and .30-30, interchangeable by snapping off the fore end. No need for adapters.

Single shot anything doesn't sound like you are going to survive very well. Get a pump or even better a semi automatic shotgun and that will be much better & safer. ALSO just buy the survival gun new to save yourself hidden problems with used firearms.

not a combat shotgun, although some folks are very quick, I would never consider a single shot break action shotgun a combat shotgun. Your getting too wrapped in the looks, Im trying to create a lighter/more packable/ more accurate shotgun, the plastic"tacticool" weighs half what the wood does, collapsible stock means easier to store in a pack. And over all better ergonomics.

Just as a point of information. Wandering Beast said people in the UK were limited to air rifles. That isn't true. There are one and a half million shotguns in the UK and a great many rifles. You can't own a hand gun, but if you want a long gun, you apply for a permit and show you have somewhere to shoot the gun you want, and that you aren't a criminal or a lunatic. If you want a .308, you just show you are a deer stalker or that you have suitable land where the owner is OK with your shooting your .308, or that you belong to a rifle club with suitable ranges. In the States, you have a very different population density that we do. In England, there are 413 people per sq kilometer. In the US, the figure is around 35. This leads to a more careful attitude about who is using firearms where so as not to put people in danger of irresponsible use of full bore rifles. I have a cupboard full of long guns because I have places to shoot them without harm to others. Thanks for your video.

Sorry you lost me when you took the wood off the shotgun and added the polymer stock , the idea is to take what you have and make it a survival fun is what I’d think but thanks for taking time to show the info you did , I’m sure someone got some ideas out of it

I have a Mossberg 20 pump I bought with a rifled barrel and added a shot barrel I got cheap used. With the open sights and rifle barrel it shoots one hole groups with sabot slugs at 50 yds. but my ageing eyes I added a fixed power 4X scope (Weaver). Up here in the dense woods of New England you rarely get a shot over 50 yards, but out to 100 I have no fear. Shot barrel works great on woodcock, partridge and pheasant. All told cost less than this so called perfect bugout gun

I have a model 1875 swing action, it's sweet... I took the whole trigger block assembly out cleaned it did some honing here and there, And I cut the barrels down to 18.5 inches, It's still VERY accurate, probably getting a this shroud that has built in ghost ring sights for it...

the shells will fit but if your using low temp beeswax or talo to seal your shell it may come apart in your magazine tube. not ideal, make sure your pump doesnt have rifling

You could perfectly fit all 3 chamber adapters in the beautiful original stock...and you changed it out? After talking about the sight, I thought you were going to change that out. Not the furniture that was already great for its intended use.
