My daughters and I are currently building a slot car track together. As we come from a long line of proud Texans, we took the time to come up with Texas-themed names for all of our turns. The two main straights are named after Carroll Shelby and A. J. Foyt. Except for tire sponsors and the like, all of our track sponsors are also Texas based companies. This part of the project was surprisingly engaging for my girls and it turned the project away from just crafting and made it into a history lesson for the girls. I found out just how little my girls are learning in their history classes, and I got to introduce them to some neat places and historical events along the way. Having named curves makes it far easier for my daughters to follow races on TV, but it’s downright invaluable on a slot car track. They struggle with remembering turn numbers, but when you name them it just sticks. The same is true for adult race fans, we just don’t realize it.

There’d be three long straights, plenty of sweepers, left and right, several hairpins or near hairpins, one of them murderous, and lots and lots of elevation changes. The scenery could be awesome, too, running from countryside to neighborhoods and back, with two rivers thrown in for good measure. I’ve pondered it idly for a long time, tweaking it in my mind, and this video makes me think I just might be able to do it, after all. Certainly I’ve got enough time on my hands these days.
