They will. It's simply a matter of trying out and refining different techniques. I'm 50, and started as a pre-teen back in '80-81. Back then, there were far fewer after-market kit detailing products available, and most modelers shared their various building and personally developed detailing techniques with each other, or in modeling magazines and publications. Later in the mid-late 80's and early '90's came rather hard-to-find, low-production, and rather expensive videotapes of techniques. These were usually available only at IPMS Conventions. The Internet is a Godsend to fine scale model and diorama builders.

I built my own version of this kit about three years ago. I opened the top and modified it so the interior can be viewed from the outside. I painted and weathered the interior then added tamiya's turned aluminum rockets along with the kit supplied rockets on the storage racks, one on the loading tray and even one loaded in the breach. The paint was dark green and dark brown with some yellow and this was made into a Ambush scheme. The crain loading strap was made of Tamiya tape painted and weathered and the crain's cable was made of thread. Keep up the good work and look forward seeing more builds to come.

Great tip about trimming out the boundary strip between the blue/yellow epoxy strips. I also sand flat areas to provide some "tooth" to help hold the putty on the bare plastic.

Nice technique, this putty looks fun to work with. Will try this in the future for sure. When i was doing zimmerit on my tiger and king tiger, i used plaster. I mixed a small batch til it got a nice texture, put it on the spot i want to put zimmerit on and then used a small piece of fine tooth saw to make the pattern. It turned out pretty good, and the thing is, it chips easily so you can chip on it with a toothpick to make it look worn and damaged.

You can use cernit to make the zimmerit and heat it with a heatgun on lowest setting to harden it without damage the plastic, if you are not satisfied with the result of the zimmerit before you use the heatgun you can just peal it off and start over with the same cernit, no waste.

Ohh, for dusts, mud, and rust, I would heavily recommend Apple Barrel arts and craft acrylics from Wal-Mart! .50 cents a bottle that last you years. I use jet black as base and usually slobber it on my armor. The cream, beachcomber beige work really well to simulate dust and dirt while territorial beige works great as mud! Give it a try. They work great!

Zimmerit looks great! I've had great results with Elmer's Wood Filler, but I'm sure there's dozens of viable ways to create good looking zimmerit. Does anyone know why only the hull got the zimmerit coating on the Sturmtiger? Edit: Looks like it's because the hulls were taken from refurbished Tigers with the zimmerit already applied.
@stevenfox7407
@stevenfox7407 7 жыл бұрын
Zimmerit was only really needed at heights that a standing man on the ground could reach. There was little chance of someone hanging down from a tree branch trying to apply a magnetic mine to a passing vehicle. Look at photos of actual vehicles; many only had zimmerit partway up the side, at least for non-turreted vehicles like the Sturmtiger, Jagdtiger, Elefant etc.
@jerryvolpini7987
@jerryvolpini7987 7 жыл бұрын
3041Markov - Yea, likely applied to the hulls of the Tiger chassis' used for the conversion and then part way up the hull, as Steven says. There were a few examples with no zim'.
@3041Markov
@3041Markov 7 жыл бұрын
The unprotected casemate section of the Sturmtiger is still easily within reach, unlike the uncoated sections of the Jagdtiger and Elefant. I think this was just at the point of the war where the Germans stopped applying zimmerit, but had no reason to remove the already applied zimmerit to the old Tiger hulls.
@stevenfox7407
@stevenfox7407 7 жыл бұрын
Upon consulting references, you are absolutely correct. The 18 Sturmtigers built were converted from existing hulls, no doubt with the zimmerit already in place.

Wonderful video as always Andy! One minor suggestion that I think you might have fun trying. The Friul tracklinks can be chemically weathered in a bath of Blacken It. Turns them really nice and dark with some grays mixed in. I always weather my links before putting them together. Then just put the links in a jar of water and shake it for a minute or so. This polishes the high points down to bare metal! thanks again!

Hello, Andy. The next time you paint tracks, try drybrushing a metal color over the brown coat. It gives a really good looking worn metal look, and it also looks very realistic.

Back in the 1970s, I used body filler as the paste, together with a spreading tool made from a broken junior hacksaw blade epoxied in to a pice of wood for the handle.Not perfect and somewhat messy, but it worked quite well. Interesting to see you can now get proper spreading applicators

When I built mine, I used Cavalier Zimmeritt, Fruil tracks and a Royal Model Interior. The crane cable wasn't used directly on the rockets... Photos I've seen have a steel band that goes around the rocket itself, then the cable attaches to that band. My Sturmtiger has a full load of rockets... six Tamiya turned aluminum, four plastic Tamiya Rockets and four Italeri plastic rockets for a total of fourteen.

ACtually, it all depends on which vehicle you are modeling and what time period. If you are modeling the ones that just enter service, and perhaps the two that served in Warsaw, you might see zimmerit. The ones that participated in the Ardeens offensive and especially the 7 that served in Remagen, those didn't have zimmerit. They were removed a long time ago.

Without looking up the exact dates, Zimmerit was discontinued late on in the war as it found by the German high command that they had overestimated the threat from magnetic munitions. In a report I saw somewhere (my brain can't remember where) the German Command basically said 'we worried about a threat that was non existent and expended scarce resources to combat it'
