I agree, I recently bought an F31 after having driven older BMWs for the last 15 years (E30, E39, E91) and have so far disliked the small digital portion of the gauge cluster. It was one thing when it was a small square of pixels, very in line with the design legacy of the BC button on the signal stalk, but the light from the digital section is annoying and the economy gauge is significantly less clear than when it used to be a gauge. The features on the fully digital cluster they installed look cool, but I would much rather have that information on the center screen. You just can't beat a simple design with physical gauges for peripheral vision.
@johnd830Күн бұрын

Back in early 2015, my wife traded her 2012 Golf Sportwagen TDI for a 328i Touring in Estoril blue, with all the MSport goodies. The Golf was a great car, except that the diesel didn’t really work for us - it took waaaay too long to heat up, to the point that it never got up to temperature on our commute. Of course, a month after she got the BMW, Dieselgate broke. The BMW was gorgeous, but I kinda hated it. The EPS is horrendous - you could literally feel the poles of the electric motor as you turned the wheel. And worse, that was about all you could feel. The steering was totally dead. Sport mode just made it heavier, not better. The engine and trans tuning weren’t great, with a ton of lag at low RPM. It ate brake rotors (I put 2 sets of fronts and 3 rears on it in 8 years). And, there were lots of rusty fasteners, BMWs aren’t immune. Add to that the fact that the timing chain guides don’t last the life of the N20 (supposedly fixed on the B48), and we got rid of the car last year. Sure was pretty, though.

Interesting about the change to the heads up unit. on something as basic as a Chevy Sonic changing from one door unlock to 4 door unlock is easy and doable by the menu on the screen. By the way, my wife and daughter much prefer the 1 door unlock. They see it as a 'safety' feature. Just another one of those things that women have to think about in order to feel safe. Sometimes your car is your 'safe-room'.

Love the build, but just a heads up - in your last video you used the Valvoline oil that doesn't have BMW LL-01/04 certification on it, and while it may seem like not a big deal, there is an increased risk in low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) that could cause catastrophic engine failure especially on DI engines, and even more so when tuned.
@speedacademyКүн бұрын
Is there more info on this somewhere? How does oil cause detonation?
@Goose__10Күн бұрын
@@speedacademy It's a relatively newly known concept, I think there was a new API spec that was introduced in 2018 to address this and improve protection against LSPI. It's difficult to find info but I found out about this from Dave's Auto Centre video recently (Title: Audi S5 Update: Piston Damage From LSPI (Low Speed Pre-Ignition)). He goes into a bit, but there wasn't quite as much detail on it other than to say that it's possible the engine damage was caused by LPSI. Interestingly Valvoline has a pretty good description on their site that actually explains the why: "Further research studies learned that engine oil droplets are the most common cause of stochastic pre-ignition. Namely, during a piston’s compression stroke, microscopic droplets of engine oil enter the combustion chamber through the gap between the piston and the cylinder wall. The engine oil mixes with freshly injected fuel. When compressed by piston rings, the blend burns before the actual ignition process begins, causing abnormal combustion. That causes the rapid growth in pressure in the combustion chamber that acts against the piston, resulting in severe engine damage" There was also study online with some more research on it: "Low-speed pre-ignition and super-knock in boosted spark-ignition engines: A review", this bimmerpost forum post has some really good details: f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2068268 I assume the Euro motor blends have these specific additives included to help reduce the potential of it. It's very possible that Valvoline Restore and Protect has similar additives or even the same ones, but as a fellow BMW owner I was wary and just stuck with a specific Euro/BMW certified oil just in case.
