I watched through your entire 3 part series on building a computer desk, and I'm awfully surprised. I did this very same thing about three years ago. I needed a computer desk for my office, and none of the ones in the market really fit my needs, either being too under developed, or being overzealous with lots of racks and drawers that I wouldn't really need, or would come in the way. Price also being was another factor. So I set out to design my own computer table. I had never done anything of that sort of a personal project, but the curiosity and the enthusiasm to see how it pans out pushed me towards it. My initial design was done on CAD (Solidworks - my background being in Mech Engineering), then did a sketch on paper. I printed the design, worked out what all I would require (bill of materials), tabled the cost, and took the shortcut of hiring a carpenter to take care of the building part. Time being a constraint, I had to take it this route, plus I didn't have much of the tools back then. The construction was done in the same way that you did, and even had the 'hidden shelves', the wire holders, the table corner wire-ports/slot. I used a panel of colored plywood with vinyl finishing for the top of the table. One thing that I found missing from your build, and something that even concerned you is the flexing of the board when you place your weight on it. Take the 'hidden shelf', invert it 90', and bolt it with L-clamps underneath the main table onto the wall, halfway lengthwise of the main board, and you have supports called 'ribs'. Put up a couple or more, and you will have one superstrong table. You can place slots in them for the wires to go through. Also, I had placed a 2 inch wide strip of the same MDF lengthwise along the edge of the table underneath. This added to the corner strength. Before I had done all this, the table would flex under pressure, but now I can sit on it, and no flexing. I suggest you place these as well. It's been three years since I had built my table, and have to say, its still good as new. The best investment. And yea, it took just under a week to build and paint. It holds 2 computers, a photostat/printer machine, and a paper rack. This also felt really good to watch, because of the feeling that if you have an idea, there is an old saying (don't know who said it) that there will be atleast nine people around the world who will have thought up the same. Thanks for reading my awfully long comment too. :D Just enthusiastic about projects like this. Subbed!

I want to do something similar to this one day. We actually, several years ago with my dad and brother, built the legs/stand for a long slab of marble, out of plumbing pipes, and secured the marble top to the stand with silicone. Before assembly, we used a grinder to smooth the edges of the pipes out and make sure they snugly fit together. It's a very sturdy desk and looks pretty industrial. I'd like to make a quick video of it; let me know if you would be interested in seeing it. It's a cool concept and may give you ideas for other things like this. Interestingly enough, we also built our tree house years ago on a tall, plumbing pipe structure. Stone slabs support the feet and it was built around the trunk of the tree for extra support.

Epic video! I like how you thought outside the box and chose floor tile for a covering! You actually inspired me to improve my own computer desk. It's basically a long, wooden door propped up on each corner by four plywood shelves resting on another door on the floor. Since it wasn't stable and slid around quite a bit, I bought some L plates that I screwed into the back of each shelf, then coated the top and bottom edges with foam insulation so they stuck under pressure. I even did this to my record shelf, and it made quite a difference!

Hello, I'm a designer, just wanted to point out for future projects or for your reinforcements that with mdfs and particle boards you need a support every 90 centimeters (I use metric, sorry) to keep it from flexing, I have tried it with bookshelves, no matter the thickness you need to support every 90 cms (or more often if it goes with the design...)

MDF is going to flex. MDF is very dense and thicker will probably only increase the flex of the top surface. Adding runners on the front and cross beam support would have helped the stability and significantly, if not completely, eliminated the flex. I like the abstract method of building your own desk but I have to say that this desk could have easily been built for MUCH less than 500. Priming and painting the desk then finishing with a nice epoxy would have given it a clean and strong surface. In the end, it's your desk so if you like it then more power to you but "Ultimate" is pretty strong and the tiled look on any surface but the floor looks pretty tacky. There are plenty of zero hardware joints that could have worked for this build as well. Since the desk has no drawers and only one primary horizontal surface it would have made taking the desk apart or replacing sections even easier.
@gamesofcontent
@gamesofcontent 9 жыл бұрын
Jason Mei go with 3/4 oak or some other domestic wood like cherry. MDF is just sawdust glued together. I think im going to make this desk but a portable version thats not mounted. Only difference is i will use Cherry wood and then i will coat it with a glass epoxy so it is durable, smooth, and water tight.
@tassie7325
@tassie7325 8 жыл бұрын
That is a sweet desk. Simple solution to the strength issue that won't cost a cent - don't sit on your desk, sit on a chair, that is what they are designed for.

Great work! Cheaper method would have been to fine sand the wood and stain it, then seal it with a few generous coats of polyurethane. Polyurethane is very durable and you can use very fine orbital sander to heat up and remove any dings or scratches easily. Plus it's not pricey and you'll have enough left over for any/all repairs you'll need down the road. Great video!

Why do you need all this desk space and cable management if you are only going to have 1 mac mini and a monitor. Seems like alot of wasted space.

+Shini Did you see the Part 1 video? He mentions that he designed it to be able to have one or more of his classic computers on there as well-not permanently, but as needed. The corners are deep enough to fit an Apple ][e.

Rowdy The best way to make your own desk is to get a kitchen counter top of your liking, cut it to size (or get someone else to do it if you lack the tools or motivation lol. I'd end up making a mess of it or killing myself if I tried such a thing!) then stick legs on it. Ikea do some nice, solid table legs in various styles as do most hardware places. The great thing with kitchen counters is they're very strong and excellent at resisting scratches and stuff. Not to mention they tend to come in pretty long sections so unless you need a monstrously massive desk you'll have no problem getting a single span surface that fits your needs.

Some of you are being a little harsh. The desk was made for a specific room for specific needs while maximizing floor space. I'm living in a house and have no desire to move for years. I have looked at many desks in stores and online, some a couple thousand dollars, they just do not fit my needs. This video gave me some great ideas on how to build a large custom wrap around desk with deep desk space. Great idea installing the power management system before installing the top. I'm definitely going to use plywood when constructing my desk. Thanks for all of the great tips!! Great video!!! ☺

Way too expensive and time consuming for a desk where at the end of the process does not provide 100% satisfaction, and even worse, buckles under light weight. The whole design, build, and quality ironically mimics the Apple range of products. The funny thing is that you have designed it according to the specific room dimensions and layout. It cannot be moved without tarring it apart. You essentially have created a common cubical design only without the walls, wasting allot of material on covering walls where the walls themselves could have provided all the support needed using only one or two brackets. Then at the end you also choose to cover the already expensive wood, with even more expensive materials. (Are you a lead designer for Apple?) Since it already appears to be a permanent non movable piece of furniture, all in all you could have achieved far better results and easier to implement using basic home DIY tools by simply using drywall materials and building technique for the whole shape of the table, using the walls as supports, then investing the left over money in a nice solid top made out of wood or PVC and no one but your wallet could tell you the difference. But then again, you are an Apple user so not much expectations there.
