I was able to revise the 3D printed transmission cross-member and now everything is ready to bolt the Trackhawk awd transmission into the Charger. I was planning on fabricating the transmission tunnel but changed my mind since the front diff is not yet mounted, so I ended up blocking the car out with 80 grit sand paper to get her ready for primer once again.

I went to trade school right out of high school for auto body repair and the way you were explaining sanding is exactly the way the instructor taught us and used the same demonstration as for pressing hard causes the body work to be wavy. You're building an awesome build and giving good advice as well!

Dave, when the metal is bent, it looses a bit of length , add the thickness of the material , per bend , and then once in hand to shape, then drill / weld . etc. Really enjoying watching your progress. hope all goes smoothly. if you were local , id offer help .

I highly recommend to stop priming over straight 80 grit, you’ll get a much better finish and not have to worry about shrinking if you finish your filler/prep by knocking your 80 down with 180, 220 and sometimes I’ll take it to 320 before priming and block that primer with 180-320. Then on your secondary primer coats start blocking with 220/320 and finish your final blocking at 500-600 for your sealer and basecoat. You won’t have to fight deep sanding scratches nearly as much and reduce possible shrinking ten fold. Hope this helps, I’m a retired automotive and custom private aircraft painter of 15yrs.

Your car, your way.. how you perform the build is your business. I'm with you doing the hard way, sometimes the so-called easy way ends up costing you more in time. I believe the saying "is you don't have the time to do it right the first time, where are going to get it the second time. Keep the workmanship high it's great.

Hey, Dave. We bend lots of 1/4 inch plate in different shapes, as long as the bends are relatively parallel as yours seem to be. We build basic dies and use a 40 ton press. Obviously, in the case of your cross member, we'd start at the driver's side ( or vice versa), and make the bends in succession while feeding the plate through the press. It's basic and works well as long as you ensure the plate maintains perfect alignment with the die along the bend axis. Or you could farm it out to a shop. 🙂 As always, great work.

I don't think you'll need those triangles in the transmission mount because I'm pretty sure that both sides of the mount will neutralize most of the forces. But since you designed it in solidworks see if you can set up finite element analysis to make sure. Sometimes adding metal just increases the weight a part has to support and doesn't do much for strength.
