I've made rocket stoves for a few people and about to make one for my son and his family for their camping trips, this one of yours would suit him and his family perfect. I can safely say this double one with a hot plate is amazing and is undoubtedly the best one I've seen yet so i will be starting on this tomorrow, many thanks for this video Tim its brilliant.

This is why I picked up welding. I’m pretty handy with woodwork, but some things just don’t work well in wood (like a go kart… or camping stove). So glad I put some (many) hours in to learn welding - projects like this are inspirational!!

Great story Tim - thank you. I especially liked the aside about how heavy industry training and lighyt fab are very different. (I trained as a mech. eng. in the railways in Australia, so I felt this pain acutely...) Well done going from concept to finished prototype in the timeframe - bonus points for it working so well, out of the blocks. Awesome vid.

Have you ever tried the scotch brite XT pro disc for the angle grinder. It’s my go to for prepping metal now. They are awesome, you should check them out if you haven’t. They rip through mill scale, paint and rust. I wipe the metal down with acetone before I use it just to get the oil film off the metal but that only takes a second. But they say you don’t even have to clean it before you use it but I think it’s better that way. You could just prep the metal and then wipe the area down that you’re welding but I’m kinda weird so I wipe it down before and after…😂

@TimWelds

I assume you're looking to put one on a miter saw. I always use my 14" chop saw with the Evolution aluminum blade, which has a 12" version, but they are only rated for low RPM saws, so I don't have a good recommendation for you. I have used some miter saws on aluminum and they worked great, I just don't know what blade they were using.

Pretty awesome thanks for sharing great idea. Question? How does your table do against and with the mig splatter BBs? Do you still have to remove them later?
@TimWelds
@TimWelds Жыл бұрын
Thanks! The spatter doesn't even stick to this table with the hard coating. Siegmund includes some special cleaner and an anti-spatter treating spray to periodically maintain the table and I think that helps as well. The hardest thing on the table is little arc marks from grounding through the table. They don't cause a functional problem, so I continue to do it for efficiency sake, but there are little cosmetic marks from it.

Great job Tim. If you find you have some hot spots on your griddle, I suggest welding some small angle iron running the long way on the underside of the griddle. That's how my Blackstone cook surface was designed and it seems to work well.
@TimWelds
@TimWelds Жыл бұрын
Thanks! That's a great suggestion. I've only used it twice, but I might try measuring the temp in a few spots to see if something like that could help.
@louisperugini785
@louisperugini785 Жыл бұрын
My Blackstone griddle has a couple of pieces of angle iron with the point/corner facing down towards the flames, and the legs stitch welded to the underside of griddle. I imagine it helps prevent warping, adds thermal mass, and forces the flames to spread out a bit. I hope that helps.

@TimWelds
@TimWelds Жыл бұрын
When you get the wood situated just right, it works really well and the temp was just about right for cooking on. I found that blocking off the wood chute causes the air flow to be much quicker and the whole thing to burn hotter because there's not the option for air to flow in the chute.

@JinKee
@JinKee Жыл бұрын
@@asintonic if you tip it upside down there's only a little clearance between the burners and the hotplate. Trying to get the ash out of the little holes looks annoying.
@TimWelds
@TimWelds Жыл бұрын
I just tip it toward the front with the wood chute facing down and shake it out. I've only used it twice, but so far it's all fallen out really easily past the expanded metal in less than 5 seconds. If you wanted to build one that was easier to empty, you could add a removable bottom or a little door. The reason I used holes in the bottom was to allow me to add a sliding vent on top of them like an old Weber grill if I need to for heat control. It turns out that I can control the fire pretty well just by moving the sticks in and out.

For camping... well not sure about that. It's heavy, bulky, hard to adjust flame power, long to the the heat at the proper temp. The surface will rust even before day one and whife won't accept the food getting cooked on it. Cleaning will be hard, and it's probably more expensive than buying two butane burner/stove. soooo yeah neat camp stove, but the whole 'rocket stove' thing is about getting 100% combustion, and is typically achieved by only allowing air in through the same inlet as the fuel. i noticed that your stove was producing a lot of smoke. maybe cover that big air intake in the front and see what happens
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 3 ай бұрын
I agree, the design could use some optimization and it's a little smoky. It works pretty good for a first attempt thrown together in a hurry, but I'm thinking about making a second version with a more efficient burn and some way to control the heat.

@@TimWelds 9:20 it looks like youve got everything set up really well, love the design. at first i thought you might also be losing efficiency to the dual exhaust, but those things burn so hot it seems unlikely any extra air would be getting in through either pipe... just seal up everything but the fuel/air in and the exhaaust and id reckon you burn two holes through the cook top 🤣 - im totally stealing this build when i go home to alaska

Once your grill has been in use and gets a little dinged up, taking a power tool camping may not be what you want to do. A grille brick is an abrading block of material that does a great job. I first learned about them in the restaurant business. A grille brick can get rid of raised metal from a gouge in the surface. Be aware, they are not long lasting as would be a sharpening stone. The material is very porous and must be removed thoroughly prior to cooking. It is just another method of performing a task and a grille brick is not for everyone. Amazon has them, so do restaurant supply stores. Looking over the rocket stove build, the burner could be made from 6 pieced with a good layout and proper bending, and thickness does come into play here. I was thinking the inside corner welds could be eliminated but this is not a time saver.
