Joseph Nicklo Its not a replacement indeed. Its just amazing what they did with Davinci in such a short time period. The video editor is the best hybrid of everything great about avid, premiere and fcpx . If Adobe would have half of that commitment they wouldn't have to release beta quality 'releases' to their montly paying customers. All they care about is subscriptions and 'new features are more important than stability and optimization as a consequence. I think the only reason they still exist is because after effects , illustrator, photoshop ( and acrobat ) are industry standards :)

Trust me. Its just as bad on OSX. Windows and OSX both have good and bad properties. Personally i care the most about the OS. And OSX is a fantastic OS under the hood. Most artists i know dont want to spend time on building computers and keep them running. They need to get shit done Windows simply requires more computer skills from the user to keep stuff going on the long term. Personally i would be happy to have less specs for my money when i can have a flawless davinci/fcpx workflow running on unix. But for motion graphics and 3D work pc's are the best choice in most cases

AE: - High speed single core - A lot of RAM - get GTX not AMD PR: - Multi Core
@MarketAndChurch5 жыл бұрын
In Puget Sound's own testing, there is not much difference between the RTX Titan, 2080, 2060, or Vega 64. Even Intel's own integrated graphics is not that far behind all of those GPU's, and this is because of After Effect's poor optimization. Now, if you're working on big projects with a lot of effects and Red Giant plugins, etc., and you can't afford a Quadro, your best option is the $700 AMD Radeon 7 because it has 16GB of memory, but if money is not a problem, then go for the $2,500 RTX Titan with its 24GB of memory, and the last graphics card I'd consider is the RTX 2080 Ti with 11GB of memory. Even the 2080 Ti's 11GB of memory can be an issue, so do not get a 2080 (which has 8GB of memory) unless your AE projects are simple and/or small.

Okay, I have a few questions/concerns regarding the choices made in this build (although, I'm sure a lot of it had to do with your budget): 1. Why not go with an i9-9980XE? It gives you so many more cores for higher performance in exporting as well as working in different programs that rely more on the CPU like Adobe Premiere. 2. Why use 2666MHz memory? I'm sure it's a safe RAM speed but surely you can go higher like 3200MHz or even more. 3. I do not agree with using your NVME SSD as your cache drive. That is your fastest drive and I feel it should be used as your primary boot drive for your OS and Adobe programs. Also, you could've gone with SSDs that have way more space. A Samsung 970 Pro (the NVME SSD) has a 1TB version and the Samsung 860 Pro (the SATA SSD) has a 4TB version that is currently 50% off at the time of this post. 4. I understand that Puget mentioned that they don't want to invest too much into the GPU so an RTX 2080 might very well be a decent choice instead of a 2080Ti or an RTX Quadro. But why not use 2 RTX 2080s? For a program like After Effects, I think you can get even closer to real-time RAM previews if you had more GPUs to work with. And with 2 GPUs, it gives you more leeway in terms of how much stress you throw at it. 5. As a PC enthusiast, I would've appreciated to have seen what choices were made in picking out the motherboard, power supply, cooling, and even the case. I understand that School of Motion is exclusively a motion design After Effects channel. But I personally feel that if you're going to want a system that's tailored to your work in After Effects, you're going to need to understand as much of PC building as you can and not just skimp out on a pre-built system or splurge on a Mac. At the end of the day, it was an interesting video. I just think you could've gone a little further when it came to PC specs.

Really good points, but at the end of the day we are trying to maximize the build for After Effects. AE isn't going to benefit from 2 GPUs at the moment. If you'd like to figure out more reasoning behind the component choices we definitely suggest getting nerdy in their comparisons!

In 2014 I could take a 2.26GB Photoshop PSB file & have it open Photoshop, "then" the file in 15 seconds. It is still my screaming machine, running for days at time & while I am just diving in deep into After Effects so I don't know how it will do overall. I am working on a project right now that should give me some idea. It is an artistic - advertising piece for myself. So I am pushing myself to "blow my mind" the way those tutorials have been making me dream of stuff for the past couple years. More of an issue of busy with life, than not wanting to spend the time creating in After Effects. If I get a chance, I'll let you know how it does & a link to the video I create so you can guess what stuff I must have been using. Yes, a tower is much better to use, but limits are limits when you travel. Of course even in the 1990s my computers where octopuses with many external drives & devices, same for this one. All 4 USB ports are full. Left USA in 2015, my birth country.

I still have the same i7 2600K PC for a decade of which I am upgrading the GPU, RAM and SSD from time to time and I am happy with it. I do some freelance mograph and graphic design works with it. It does its job to an extent; unless I mess up with some complex 3D (fluid dynamics, displacement maps, vray, etc.). As a full time ad agency creative I also work with macs. I agree with the price/performance ratio comparison mentioned in this video. But when it comes to color fidelity, image crispness and screen performance, I could not achieve the results that an imac screen is able to produce, even with a mac display connected to the PC. It's always blueish compared to macs, even with the white point is set to 5600K. I have swapped 5 displays to this day (Samsung, LG, ViewSonic, Asus, Dell). I am open to all advices on this concern. Which display you guys use?

Pretty sure Windows has come a long way and part of me actually wants to build a PC to work with AE, but I can't forget the day I gave up on Windows almost 13 years ago. I was working on a project that involved editing almost 9 hours of footage from 3 cameras. After hours importing all of the MiniDV tapes through firewire and about 8 hours of editing in Premiere the Blue Screen of Death appears. I try to reboot the system, but Windows no longer starts up. I tried removing the hard drive and put it on another PC to try to salvage the footage and the Premiere project and everything else was corrupted, I lost all of my work less than 24h before my deadline. That same week I bought a iMac.

My only complaint about PC/Windows is Quicktime is useless on every Windows machine that I've used. Typography is better in Mac OS, special characters. Alas... Mac ride is finally over... I see everywhere PC builds with the BEST and most expensive parts. I was wondering if you guys could make budget-oriented hardware recommendation for general use After Effects, Motion Graphics and other 3D software. This channel seems well versed on hardware so I wanted to ask for advice without breaking the bank. Would a Ryzen 5 2600 be enough in terms of single-core performance? or would I be better off with a Intel i5 8400? I'm getting started on AE so I'm no professional (save me the i7 8700k recommendations) and could handle render times, but would like smooth performance when studying (scrubbing, effects, preview of the project) I currently have a AMD A9-9420 laptop with radeon R5 integrated graphics with 4GB of RAM, it gets sluggish with rendering and sometimes even Illustrator. Will a Ryzen 5 + GTX 1050 Ti/RX 560 be smooth for this type of work? Or is it better to get a GTX 1060/RX 580 with a better CPU? Any advice is appreciated!
@schoolofmotion5 жыл бұрын
The first thing recommended is to look at the article in the link of this video. There we go into what you want to focus on and why they are important. This will greatly help you to determine where you can save money and where you need to spend more when creating a PC build. Check out Pugetsystems website and read their case studies on the reasons why you should pick one type of RAM over another and one CPU over another. If you're only operating with 4GB of RAM that is a large bottleneck for processing data. You'll want to get a very bare minimum of 16GB, and then continually add on top of that. 1 stick of 16GB RAM is better than 2 sticks of 8GB RAM for processing. Hope this helps!

Keying 4K footage takes forever in AE on my 2017 MacBook Pro. But in Motion, I can key, grade and plays back in real-time. So why can’t Adobe optimize After Effects to work better on multiple OSs rather than pushing me to switch to a PC desktop?

Yeah... after lots of testing between the best MAC and a custom made PC had to offer with similar price, the VFX production house I work at did a major overhaul and out went the MAC's and in came the PC's. The render times and workflow was much faster and not to mention the price savings. I do think some time ago MAC's were better for creative work but nowadays there's just no justification for their price/performance ratio. Either PC's caught up to MAC's or Apple just got lazy and decided to just live off their brand, I think it's both.

Awesome to see that you can create an After Effects beast for less than 5K. I wonder if it would be built any differently if it was specifically for Adobe Premiere?
@schoolofmotion5 жыл бұрын
We asked Puget and they said this build-out should be great for Premiere Pro. The big difference comes down to rendering. Premiere Pro utilizes mutli-core rendering, so theoretically it would render much faster with more cores. We did a build out in the article for a super fast (and expensive) Premiere machine, but it actually would lead to a slight dip in AE performance.

YO! Check out Linus Tech Tips. Results show that you can get less than 5% boost in performance. but, there are a lot of crashes that can be involved. If you're working in a professional environment you are going to reduce crashes as much as possible. So even though IT IS FASTER, it's not recommended. kzbin.info/www/bejne/epC8pWesiL9-jM0

A good overview, well produced composition. They do know what they are doing. But. If you are going for a desktop beast. At least go all in on custom water cooling, and extreme stable overclocking. As they stated speed was merrier rather than multitasking core count / threads. That makes me wonder the possibilities if the program could utilize all the cores, at maximum speeds. Again, thats another ball game. Im on a 9 year old system now. The 980x with 24GB ram and a gtx 780 from 2013. That system is the most tedious to work with even remotely trying to use 4k footage for a 720p render. It laggs, chopps, it does not even make me want to do what I really want to do. One day

I am not a hot Mac fan, my workhorse is an AMD 3900x PC but I am just wondering what monitor do you use in your Graphics/Design/Coloring workflow? Monitor is an essential part of Photographers, Designers, Motion Designers, Illustrators, Graphic Designers and....workflow. My AMD PC came around 2200$ + 1100$ for an almost 4K BenQ SW271 monitor. I paid 3350$ because you can't and I repeat you CAN'T trust cheap monitors for any kinda Graphics/Motion Graphics workflow. In the meantime a beefy 27" iMac is around 3400$. iMac's monitor is 5K, the brightness is over 500nits, my BenQ is 4K and 350 nits...and you can trust iMac's monitor most of the times. If your workflow doesn't need a very good monitor, yeah Macs don't make any sense but if you need it, the prices are almost the same if not cheaper.

I'm well aware of the shortcomings performance wise of macs but I'm also very well aware of the shortcomings of dealing with Windows OS. I have been a user of both professionally and whenever I hear people say what you've said I usually assume they haven't worked a lot in both environments. I'm not a fan boy I just greatly prefer the Mac OS. Pure and simple. That being said Apple has been dropping the ball in regards to pros and we know it and they know it. And much like the narrator in this video he's realizing he's probably going to switch to PC. But why is he so bummed? Well, I can tell you: Windows is super annoying to work with. It's gotten WAY better in recent years thought. I started with Windows 95 and worked my way up through many iterations. When I first started using Mac OS it was a breath of fresh air. Overall I'm all about whatever gets the job done and what you're happiest using. If you love Windows, more power to you. If you love Apple, more power to you. Does Apple charge too much? Yep. More than anything I'm frustrated that I'm forced to decide between two systems only. I work with the Adobe Suite and these are the choices I have. Either side has their pros and cons. I'm also annoyed that Adobe is so behind the times as well. After Effects is NOT an efficient program anymore and it really shows. The fact that it doesn't take advantage of modern processors is pretty telling. Anyhow, my two cents.

@@galaga00 Apple's slick marketing tricked me into buying a iMac. And as time went on, I realized it for the piece of garbage it was and was able to admit that I overpaid for it. My problem is when cult users like youself come in and muddy the waters with claims that it's everyone else's fault or that Apple overcharges for good things. No. That's not the case at all - Apple makes underperforming garbage and extracts the most it can from illiterates like you who don't know how to read and test specs. It's the biggest hustle on 'creatives' that use their product, because what the f would a graphic designer or music artist really know about tech? btw, are the weirds videos on your page made with iMovie?
