i made the mistake of getting an average PC for editing a couple years ago, then learned so much and surpassed the capabilities it could handle for the jobs i do now. I built a monster PC and it has let me learn so much more. i recommend building a PC for where you want to be not where you are now, you will definitely learn alot with a faster pc.

This is one of THE most helpful computer discussion I've ever watched. A professional who actually knows the tools of the industry and understands that the use cases actually turn the whole build-decision process around; starting with storage for example. I have some questions about motherboard decisions -- audio choices, I/O requirements, etc., but I'm much more confident now making some decisions about my next rig. Thank you for this.

I'm running an 8700k with 1080ti and I was having slow down on my footage from the new Osmo Pocket 3, which was capturing 4k60 10bit. I thought about splurging on a new system for fun since mine is somewhat old. But a friend advised that I consider paying for the Blackmagic license to help boost. I thought about it, and since Blackmagic has been allowing free software in Resolve, I figure it's nice to pay them back for all the time I've used it. In any case, long story short, all my footage magically worked better in the Studio version. The monitoring playback is smooth, the rendering went up by like 125% speed. I was doing 40-45fps rendering in Resolve free, and it went to 90-110fps in the Studio version. Probably is the cheapest upgrade if you want to do this. But I'm still eyeing an upgrade of the pc hardware just for the hell of it.

Great video!!! Matt probably curbed the sales of their top tier machines a little, but those are not likely to be the normal everyday sales. But I think he probably boosted overall sales, because I fell I can trust them the next time I need a system and don’t want to build it myself. The system I built in 2022 cost me around $800.00 less than the closest comparable system I customized on their site. However, I currently make around $40.00 per hour, and I calculated up the time I spent researching the parts I bought, Puget would have actually saved me money in time.

@15:45 - I disagree. What about rendering the final edit? You most definitely could use a high-end GPU as DR will give you the choice between software or hardware-accelerated exporting. Thanks for this very interesting interview .And thank you for all your amazing ( and funny) tutorials. Just saw you with Alex in his latest vid , you guys are my favorite teachers. I do a lot of wildlife vids (mainly birds) , spent some time comparing the RTX 4080 with the AMD rx 7900XTX and can confirm what Matt said about the speed in Magic Mask thanks to the AI . But, there is something else nobody seems to speak about , it's the quality .The RTX 4080 is now so fast that it can barely keep track of the mask . The AMD on the other hand is much much slower but needs less correction because the tracking is more accurate ...This being said, I personally recommend at least one of those 2 cards if you work in UHD 10 bit high bit-rate . The 4090 is probably a little bit better but too expensive in my opinion and anything lower than the RTX 4080 or RX 7900 XTX will cause drag and demand a lot of optimized media.

Will make a note here. When I upgraded my system, my budget did not allow me to get the video card I wanted, which was an Nvdia 4080. I had a 3060. So I kept it and bought a 4070. Running tests after the build was complete, I did tests in DaVinci with the both cards activated and only the 4070 selected. Compared to online tests of Resolve features on different channels and sites, I found my test results were within 10% of a 4080 at (during that time) about 40% of the price. Since both cards have the same amount of memory, it works great with Blender too. So this is an option if you can't afford the card you want.

@CaseyFaris I am about to build a new rig soon and video creation will be primary focus with gaming as secondary. I learned from "Tech Notice" videos that Intel CPUs have an iGPU and that it's really good for video editing. I also learned that Nvidia 4000 series cards are good because they have AV1. My question is: if I plan to get a 4060 or 4060ti and the plan is to use AV1 in DaVinci Resolve, do I still need Intel's iGPU? Because I think the iGPU only helps with H264 and H265 right? If I don't plan on using H265, then the intel iGPU will be useless, and then I dont have to get 14600k or 14700k, and I can just go Ryzen 7800X3D. It's so efficient and cool-running! Is this correct? Or is Intel iGPU still important even if I plan to use Nvidia and AV1 in DaVinci Resolve? Thanks!

A DDR5 heads up I don't see people talking about. I went all in (for my budget) on my build. ASUS ROG Z790 motherboard, i7 14700k, RTX 4080 OC, 128 GB 6,400mhz DDR5 etc etc. I JUST found out that the DDR5 (4x32GB) will not run at 6400mhz. I can only get it to run at 4200mhz. If you want your RAM to run close to the advertised speed, your system can only have 2 sticks (slots used)!? Why bother putting 4 RAM slots on the motherboard and advertising RAM speeds when RAM won't actually go that fast?! (XMP in BIOS won't work with 4 RAM slots used). I wish I'd got 2 sticks of 48GB DDR5 now. So there's a little heads up for anyone who reads this.

Hi, I'm using a MacBook Air M1 (16gb) and I was wondering if a custom PC (i9 14900k + RTX 4080 super + 96gb Ram) would be a worthy upgrade? Because I edit videos every days on it, and most of the times it's great but when I work on bigger projects (+25 min timeline, with vfx, sound design, multicam, titles,...) it tends to really struggle. And if it can help, I always use Proxies and also use a variety of codecs because I have a FX3, FX6 + Pocket 6K Pro but I also rent other cameras if it's needed for the project (like : Red, Arri, etc...). But I still work on a 1080p timeline (Davinci) and change the resolution just after I finish the project. So I was thinking of using my MacBook Air M1 when I need to be mobile and use a Mac Studio Ultra or a Custom Pc at my office. To be honest I don't care if it's Mac or PC because I'm used to work on both since 2006, I just want to be sure that my investment would be worth it (performance wise). Hope you see this comment and awesome video btw, such great infos shared!

This video should be online for two years ago! 😂 I started filming and editing two years ago and didn’t know much about computers. So I went to a computer shop that sold 4K/8K editing computers (that was where they advertised with) and told them what I wanted. (I wanted it to be a little bit future proof so I didn’t had to buy a new computer after one or two years.. At first the computer was ok because I didn’t do that much with it.. Six months later the future came. I really liked filming and editing and bought another camera (10 bit footage), the one crash after another.. I did have a lot of contact with them via phone and email and in total I sent back my computer for 8 or 9 times. I really have the idea that they didn’t know anything about computers.. after 15 months I finally have a computer that works fine with 4K The company now advertises with Davinci Resolve editing computers.. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Think I’m going to share this video a lot!
