B is for Build. Guy's you made a mistake with the door as its only big enough for a Saint Bernard to walk through and maybe Oscar but as for anyone else there's zero chance to get through without knocking your head off. You should have made it like the entrance of a bus, a couple of steps going down on the inside of the camper to the door and you can at least cover the steps on the inside when not in use with boarding. As always guy's 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.

Amazing work! With already having 3 doors, I’d maximize usable interior space by capping the back. I don’t think you really need it and most campers that size only have a side OR back door. Make sure you use something impact resistant and UV stable for the windows

@B Is For Build - you might want to add some curved U-Channel above the windows to collect and divert rain water, melting snow etc - otherwise you may find that runoff finds its way down to your window frames and find areas to collect and potentially start to corrode. Also, you may want to fit rubber gaskets to the glass before you fit them to the frames - it will provide additional waterproofing as well as providing vibration absorption.

Those steps look great. Unfortunately without a thermal barrier they're going to act as a large heat sink. The ideal solution is probably for the steps and door to be 2 pieces, with insulation between them. Imagine heating / cooling the habitat and loosing that energy through this big steel structure protruding into the room.

The issue(s) with the design of those steps is: that any water/mud on them will be brought inside when they're shut. You said you need to open the window before you can lower the stairs, but how are you going to reach it from the outside?or will you mainly use the rear door for access?

Your decision to use steel framing & panels seems to me to make a lot of sense in allowing you a lot of flexibility with window placement & fixing methods as shown in this post. A few extra pounds will not matter much on a unit with the carrying capacity of this truck. I am now convinced - steel for this build does make sense. Well done for making it all come together.

When you're working out the feet for the steps, don't forget to account for uneven terrain with regard to the travel of the door hinges (the end stop), and the usability and stability of the steps (grade sloping away/towards the camper, as well as unevenness between the feet). Although they are strong, twisting caused by unevenness between the feet can still cause avoidable issues.
@wreak3r Жыл бұрын
Hey Chris, you might not find this comment but here's an idea for the door, making it so that it can be stopped half way down, making it horizontal, so you can get a piece that can slot in the steps and make so it also doubles as an outdoor table!

I think that door is great. Why not cut some little doors on them and take advantage of the space under the steps. Maybe a place for recovery tools? Toss in peg board to strap stuff down so it doesn't bounce around? Just a suggestion to use every bit of space is all. Great work guys!
@imkwuzn Жыл бұрын
Really cool build! As an RV owner, is highly recommend you figure out some screens for the windows and doors. A lot of Class B RV’s use magnetic screens that hang and are split down the middle for the entry but come apart easily and then snap back together on their own whenever you enter or exit. That should be easy given the entire thing is steel!
@fritzdixxon6071 Жыл бұрын
Back door having a full size hinged section that drops down to become either a ramp or that can be stopped when flat to have a deck is a feature I have seen on toterhomes that is pretty handy.
@samcook2775 Жыл бұрын
You could cut hatch holes into the front faces of the steps so when folded down then face towards camp and then be horizontal/facing in when the door is closed so you can still access inside the camper! Could toss in non-fragile stuff like a first aid, recovery ropes, etc since it'll be raised and lowered pretty often

Just an idea for the door steps: you can add storage on the side profile of the steps rather than your initial shelf step idea. Figured the hollow interior of them can be storage for something like towels, maps, or tools on a magnetic holder- etc Happy Building & ooh, anything for April Fools??

Its looking great! Wondering if all the doors and windows are going to make it difficult to arrange the usual camper-type items inside it. A lot of light is nice and looking out windows is sweet as well, but you need cabinetry and appliances and so many other things that may not have enough room with too many windows and doors. With all the access from both doors in front and the one on the passenger side, maybe you don't need a door at the back. Whatever you do, I'm sure it will turn out awesome. Thanks for sharing all you do with us.

I can't believe you are going to add that facet/rake to the front. I was going to suggest this a few episodes back, not only to make it look better, possibly give more light to the cab, but to also act as a sort of elevated headrest inside. But then I took a look at a few actual real RV's and many had a square front so thought I'd keep my suggestions to myself - typical 🤣

Suggest speed holes in the steps. Reduce weight and load on struts. will also allow access to cavity for drainage and paint for corrosion resistance.. Also being intended for off road might i suggest Perspex instead of glass. flex in frame may shatter glass where as perspex will flex and also provide better insulating properties. Glass in campers is usually installed in rubber gaskets your using steel.

I love the step door, super cool. I do wonder about having to to open and close it all the time? Example, you are at a race event, parked and enjoying the day. It happens to be a very hot day. Loving where this is going. Just a thought, to keep the stairs from being so narrow it doesn’t need to go all the way to the ground, put stoppers in place so it stops the same distance from the ground as the height of your steps. Like your last step should just be a flat bar/steet and then a step to the ground. Hopefully that makes sense. Just like on an rv.

One issue with the door resting on the ground - if the ground is unlevel it's really hard to find a flat enough place to park. Can you suspend it from cables so it can hang above the ground? I have a trailer with a ramp door and regret it; I have to park 20 times before I find the right slope to have it rest flat and have the interior level.

This is really coming along nicely butyou may have some regrets once you are on the road as that slope on the front will tend to drive anything airborne directly into your windshield and/or ram air in between the camper and the cab roof. Hopefully I am wrong and the effects are minimal. The trim and window openings really bring the design to life. Looking forward to the fitting out of plumbing and water/waste tankage and whatever other amenities you decide you need. With only 10' of clearance you have plenty of room for a mobile satellite dish so you can stay connected wherever you are.

While the swing down step door looks cool, it is also pretty impractical. A standard swinging door makes more sense. This is a huge opening with no protection from rain. The steps will drip water and dirt inside when closed. With a swinging door, you can open it and slip in and out with minimal mess during bad weather.

A few things to consider about the door. Are you going to add a screen or storm door as well? I think it would be inconvenient to drop and lift those stairs every time you want to get in and out when at a campsite. How are you going to open the upper door window first? Seems like a high reach without the stairs. And finally how are you going to account for uneven ground or if the vehicle is parked on a slight angle? If I'm not mistaken aircraft doors like that don't go all the way to the ground. But to be clear...I think the door is a really freaking cool idea!

Motorhomes and buses normally have a well in the floor for the top step or two, so that the retractable (hinged, folding, whatever) steps don't need to be so long. It also eliminates having to duck through a low door. Of course this isn't an issue for a show truck.

I don't know if you already planned on doing this, but how about making the back wall lower down and convert into a deck. Then you could put an awning on the back and make it a screened in deck which would increase your living space. It also make it easier to put larger things in and out of the back of the rig.
