New chassis, longer wheelbase. The power is there, and with improved stability you can aim for some very fast speeds. World Record is only 205mph. You'll need to use a better radio for a full length airfield. Consider a DJI FPV to help you stay on the road next time.

I don't think DJI is a good idea for this application. I think simple analog 5.8Ghz video would be a better, less laggy and less prone to simply go blank. I would also replace the radio with crossfire or ELRS.

I'd recommend an expressLRS PWM receiver. Best range on an RC link you can get. +1 to adding an FPV system

Great video! It's incredible how fast it went without even going for full throttle. Maybe a FPV camera might help with noticing deviations earlier? Or maybe a gyro-based solution that automatically keeps it going in a straight line.

Thank you! I didn't find time to touch on this in the video, but in the future I'll definitely be using a gyro. I didn't think I'd need one below 120mph, but I imagine it would have helped with the lower speed stability before the aerodynamics took over and might have avoided the crash. Looking forward to rebuilding and going for the next barrier now!

Opinions of a Skydiver: The parachute is getting caught in a ‘burble’. The pocket of dead air directly behind the car, is the same as the dead air right above your body and rig when skydiving. You use a pilot chute and throw it out to the side when skydiving to make sure it gets out in the air flow. My thoughts are; either using a similar deployment as a reserve parachute by using a spring to deploy it and fire it out away from the car which would be easiest, or, a pilot chute to pull it out deployed from a point in the air flow.

Exactly. You can make your chute/lines pretty hard to pull out, but just use a decent pilot drag chute and it will come. Means you only need to "fire" or propel the smaller lighter drag chute, and let it do the work of pulling the main. Alternative and probably more fun! Fire a bolt out of the bottom of the car into the tarmac, using a Hilti nail gun, with the chute bag attached to it! That'll get it out. Actually. A static line across the track and a hook on the deploy cord that catches it. Means you can't not deploy it in the braking zone.

Like a smaller tube above the deadzone where the air will pull the primary chute out that sounds like a good idea also i have seen other speedrun cars eliminate front shocks & use adjustable turnbuckles this stops any chance of air coming up under the front

A pilot chute will definitely help. On fighter jets the pilot chute is released by a strong spring "shooting" it away form the turbulent air of the aircraft. The pilot chute and the spring is simply held by a mechanical lever which actuates to free the tension of the spring and the pilot chute with it. The pilot chute will then pull out the main chute like NayshanOG said.

one thing to look into is having a highspeed steering setting that makes you inputs scaled down so its doesn't get twitchy at high speeds 1:1 inputs wont work very well north of the speeds you already achieved. Great work and keep at it!

Honestly I wonder if it would be best to have some control surface on the vertical stabilizer, kinda like a plane. That kinda steering would be less affected by oscillations and inconsistent wheel to ground contact at high speed.

Definitely consider a gyro to help you keep it straight and consider taping the front of the body down to the splitter to really seal up the front end aswell maybe print some infills and sideskirts like something from Scorched RC or alike. Crazy build, really exciting to see the development and running!

Hit the brakes and the throttle until you build thrust, then let off the brake, also remember PID, let off the throttle a certain amount of time before you actually want to stop... Yikes expensive Crash 😣.

A POV system might help for steering. I also wonder if you could have adaptive controller gains that decrease the steering rates as the car goes faster. Or maybe you need a stability and heading assistance system like a lot of RC Test Flights Ardupilot systems use. I think when you're going this fast you probably want a microcontroller in the loop helping you maintain your heading down the track. Actually, there is a technology that I can't for the life of me remember the name of right now that uses base stations and triangulation to calculate positioning of an object. I know it's used as an alternative to GPS sometimes when you need really accurate positioning, so you could take this to the track, set up some base stations and have really high speed calculations of your position. This could be used for a fully autonomous run. Or semi-autonomous, with you handling the throttle and the system managing steering. EDIT: Real Time Kinematics, or RTK. That's the name of the system I was talking about. You can get centimeter level absolute position accuracy. Don't know if you're at all into microcontroller stuff, and that's a huge project, but this could be a cool way to go. Or do something else, like run two charged cables down the length of the track that generate magnetic fields which you sense with Hall effect sensors or magnetometers on the vehicle and use a PID controller to steer a straight line down the middle of the cables. They'd be like touchless guide rails.

A system with lower complexity would simply be a switch on the controller to switch between a "low-speed regime" and a "high-speed regime". Flick to low-speed to turn around and line up, then flick to high speed when doing the actual run. The low speed regime would get full authority over the steering servos, whilst the high speed regime would severely limit authority over the servos. Limiting the maximum allowed angle and perhaps a slower steering rate.

I've just been getting into things like sensor fusion and control systems, so doing something with RTK or magnetic guides (or hell, OpenCV running on a powerful SBC) sounds super interesting to me. Since you have more than enough thrust, you could add something similar to anti-recoil vents seen on high caliber rifles that pops up to redirect thrust forward. Like a simplified commercial airplane engine.

Wow you hit 100mph with relative ease, it looks like you have the power, now the challenge is stability and performance! A couple of things to consider, that hopefully won't add too much weight or complexity: The body shell might be too flexible at high speeds with all that down force and that might be another reason why you are rubbing the foam off your wheels. Rather than adjust ride height to compensate (and the problems that come with it) maybe add posts by the wheels to prop up the body shell? Also the wobble you got in the last run could have been exaggerated by all the fuel in that bottle sloshing around. You could first do a check and only put enough fuel in to complete your runs (eliminating a lot of dead weight in the process) then get a fuel container just big enough to hold that amount. And/or if you really wanted to get ambitious you can add baffles to the fuel bottle to reduce the sloshing effect. Once you get your car all dialed in 200 Kph should be your next target!

Weight isn't a big deal in top speed, he could get more power to overcome weight just by using afterburners or a higher quality engine. A stiffer chassis will make a big difference though, along with even better tires to overcome tramlining, and a longer wheelbase. The wire on the side of the engine could also be causing a very unbalanced disruption of airflow. Fins could be better angled to help with stability like fighter jets have or the Koenigsegg Jesko absolute.

Pro tip: Heading Hold Gyro hooked up to the steering. Then it will kind of shift left and right a bit (like a lane change) but always stay parallel to the straight road.

You need to have a control system to make sure that next time the car tries to stay locked on a heading once you start your run (with the exception of your inputs). The other thing to try is shove some sensors (mainly an IMU) on that car to see the forces involved!

Lock on a heading requires more than just the radio. Rcs doesn't usually have gyroscopes, compass, an active gps, or any other resource to compensate devations. Car's setup have much more influence on it.

Higher spring rates and damping to match. Third spring set up like most high downforce race cars. Front to rear aero balance across the speed range will be very important! Lots of other good suggestions are listed. Looks like a very cool project!

The car proved itself - any driver might have actually walked away from that, so stick with that. I think the car is ok but I don't think it will be humanly controllable. I wondered if you start to lose control authority at high speeds so I think you may need a rudder to work with the steering. Next - could you use a heading hold gyro? That would then mean the car will *always* point exactly down the track provided there is enough control authority to do so even if you get a gust of wind or an uneven surface which I think is what you need. You might say its cheating but I don't really think it is and those gas turbines are expensive - so be it. Finally the turbine will not like not being able to run down without cooling and that dent on the thrust tube indicates a large force which given its huge gyroscopic effect may cause one of the turbines to contact the casing. Doesn't matter how minor it'll need checking, it might well seem ok to turn by hand but obviously at full temp you might get an engine rich exhaust plume.

If he does a burn out it would chunk the tires since they are foam. Rc tires are generally made of neoprene as well which hardens when heated and would have the opposite effect.

This is what success looks like! I see in other replies that you're planning on adding a gyro-stabilized board, so I think your best bet is to change as little as possible beyond that. Things tend to go sideways quickly when you introduce a lot of modifications all at once :P

A longer car with a large floor for ground effects would make for a high downforce, low drag setup (where the only real drag is from the jet). It would be cool for you to integrate your findings from the earlier videos to create a more stable high speed car. Also a stability fin could be used behind the jet, so long as it is a material that won't melt

great video mate. Just to add my 2Cents. It's common among rc racers to apply traction compound on foam tires. Need to use mini vacuum tub after application to improve the chemical absorbing into the foam. Though the compound smells nasty and there will be tire marks on the tarmac, traction is definitely improved.

Amazing project. Looking forward to version 2. I've always wondered why nobody (that I've seen) has set up a camera with a Raspberry Pi or equivalent, for steering. Put a nice chalk line down the track, and have the processor control steering along that arrow-straight line. Line disappears, breaks are applied. This seems like it would be easy to set up.

That engine was perched up so high it was almost begging to be destroyed. The crash was unfortunate but probably the best case crash scenario. Like others have said, longer wheelbase, longer range radio, longer track and probably an elevated vantage point.

I don't get the "longer range radio" thing people are talking about, what he has should easily go much further than what he's doing specially considering it an open paved road. I still have video albeit not the best at around 700-800 ft with my current antennas and the plain radio goes much further as it's not 5.8GHz. His radio is perfectly capable and I'd imagine considering even my little 15 dollar receiver goes quite a ways out he wouldn't have issues for awhile unless perhaps he doesn't have much of an antenna on the receiver which is literally pennies to change.

It seems that the more you increased the suspension, the more wobbly and unreliable the car became, which makes perfect sense as theres more air getting under the car then which can cause issues and im somewhat surprised it didnt flip completely. I would suggest redesigning the body to better accommodate the wheels and being more careful when adjusting the suspension in the future. Another easy suggestion to further decrease the chances of totaling the car due to air getting underneath would be putting a plastic plate under the car that meets up with the rest of the body, allowing air to more easily flow under

Another thing is the foam tyres won't give you grip and won't stick to the surface. If he had rubber tyres it wouldn't get the wheelspin off the start. (Wheelspin is the tyres not having enough grip as the throttle is being pressed too hard, this is normal in high-speed cars

I have a tip for you that might work for the parachute use a stiffer Spring to release the parachute that way you get more Bang from releasing it and it has more power to push it through subtract air. Not to mention longer strings so that way the parachute is further away far away from the RC car that way it can get into some fresh air to help slow it down

Possibly, you could use acelerometer/gyros on both the ends (two for redundancy and precision) to determine the oscillations the car is experiencing and then put a simple pid controller to steer, dampening the oscillations.. Also you may use a digital compass to check if the car is going in a straight line.

As cool as this is any 1/8 electric platform can hit 100 mph with very little work. It is a very good looking build, and it should be capable of much more, but you'll have to do a lot better streamlining around that engine, it will be important as that buffeting leading to oscillations happens easier at those speeds. Maybe rebuild to more land speed streamliner type proportions, it would be more stable.

The bodyshell saved that car wrecking completely. You see the air catch it and act like a wind brake. The mounts snapping definitely saved that spooly boy... you could hear it whining down just fine as it tumbled which is pretty amazing

When working for Vector... we called the dead zone "the burble" and the trick was to launch the drogue chute in weird directions just so it would be grabbed by clean air... so perhaps you can launch a drogue chute sideways or up into the airstream and that will pull out the main chute...

9:34 you could add some metal rods inside, near the tires so that when the suspension gets too low (enough to hit the tires) the rods will stop it (at a certain height = the rods’ length)

@@chairpara you are actually supposed to turn down the foam tyres with a tyre lathe so they clear the body of the car and don't rub. The foam tyres also don't tend to expload if they rub on the body it would just rub away the foam and create excess friction preventing you from hitting high speeds.

Deffinatly continue with this and an fpv system would help with the occalations control, a nice simple side project might be to do an experiment with a simple chassis and some solid fuel rocket engines (your videos are always awesome when they are involved) also it's useful for extra data for the future to see if you could ultimately use both types of propulsion together 😉 whatever you do looking forward to the next video and glad the turbine survived :) (you may also find running it on diesel cheaper than your current fuel)

You gave us 2 options for a future car. Have you heard of the McMurtry Spéirling car? You should try to use a similar design for your jet car! Also get a real time camera feed to your controller so that hopefully you can help prevent future crashes.

I think you should build a new car taking into account what you have learned, ie: parachute release, wheel rubbing, longer wheelbase etc

If you redesign the car you should definitely add some heave shocks (also known as third spring). It can be a bit complex to build, but they are only pressed when right and left side suspension is being pressed, therefor making the car stiffer to being pushed down by higher speeds

If you keep having stability issues, you may need to move the engine forward. You need the thrust face of the engine, in your case the rear most compressor blade, to be ahead of the rear "axle". In full scale jet dragsters we aim to have the thrust face about 1 meter in front of the rear "axle" line. You will also want a smaller parachute on a much longer lanyard. Like 4-5 times as long.

Congrats on 100mph++ on your first prototype, that's impressive! First thing I thought when I saw your engine mounting: CG is too high: Turbulent air entering your engine is NOT what will limit your speed; rolling over is what will make this fail... If I may suggest: given the OP powerplant you have, make lower CG your first priority and perhaps add a rate gyro for your steering

Vacuum the car onto the floor, using the turbine. It is now illegal in formula-1, but worked very well. Use a filter to prevent sucking in dirt. The engine can be lower, too because it is sucking the air form underneath. That way you may also increase the height of the car without losing much stability.

Fine steering input control is a must! Major adjustments at speed are insanity, and even if you went to correct it seeing it drift right, at 118 you might as well have sent it veering off to the left at the wall! I think maybe if you continue attempting this, a setup with a little panel containing throttle brakes parachute and a wheel for you to more accurately adjust the steering. FPV is another idea, those fins would make a great place to implement an antenna system

Good stuff! Would love to see a new and improved versio beeting real cars! My 2 cents if you want them... If it bumps with chassis, cut chassis before releasing suspension tension so that it stays firm enough.. do the top of the car with aerodynamics that help feed the jet a bit better and keep the front of the car stable... larger wheels with a still low CG? Whatever you do.. happy to watch! Good luck! :)

Imo, the same laws of physics apply to this car. The faster you go the more drag and weight becomes an issue so do this: - Like another commenter said reduce your fuel tank to just enough size to complete the length of track. - the fastest jet land cars and planes all have enclosed engines for better aero. So enclose the engine. - enclosing the engine will also make your aero work better and help with the death wobble. - daily down your steering so it is less twitchy at high speeds

Love the video. Just fantastic. If it's a big time savings, I say keep the original but try using a drone from above that's lined up with the track to be able to see and adjust more easily. Without changing the chassis, I don't know if you can do a lot, so I'd stick with it and see how fast it can go!

Get a rc set up station for the car so you can accurately change the ride height, set up camber, caster, toe in/out etc for better stability in a straight line

I think it would be helpful for you to mount a FPV Drone camera on the car so you can control it easier.

What you could do is stand behind the car as you launch so you have the best vantage point to correct it's steering. You could also use a pair of binoculars or a scope of some sort mounted to a tripod so after you took off you can have a better sight for steering. Also since it'll be so far down the track at this point you could lay down a line of powder paint at the point where you need to brake so when the car goes over it, it'll kick up a plume giving you the signal to apply brakes.

You should use an vertical stabilizer attached to the front steering mechanism. like an couple of airplane tails to augment air steering and not have to rely on the rough asphalt surface so much.

Fantastic video, mate. Here’s an out of the box idea for steering control: put a laser light source at the end of the run and use PID loop to keep it between binocular receptors on the vehicle. Good luck!

11:30 Full Bugs Bunny air brakes, reverse thruster tube. B/c Scrubbing tires, turbine force moment is changing the steering geometry. Even the minor torque moment is effecting a strong pull to the right (x3 high turbine down force. on front), which the servos can't handle. Lengthening car body will help in both factors, example RC tether cars. Yet most forces will have to have a counter balance, ergo Reverse Thrust would be an analogue 'solid parachute'. In effect the land speed governor, while RPM is constant. PS consider Y-axis like a the trim on a jet drive boat.

Damn! I'm no engineer but a great fan of this type of project. My feeling was that the car needs to be longer and wider for better stability and for the jet engine to be mounted lower. Maybe some sort of steering damping to be installed.

Dude. My man. At those speeds, with that wheel base, you absolutely positively need computer-aided steering. You need something that can make 1,000 corrections per second to keep you going in a straight line or else the same thing is going to happen again. Now, granted such a system would be a massive project all on its own. But I think it's either that or come up with some sort of ingenious system where the car auto-balances itself to a straight line when lacking any other input. Both very tough, but IMHO definitely needed!
