Thank you so much for these comments; you guys are awesome, seriously. Information on shortcuts and techniques/stories of what people did in a pinch can be scarce as I found out when I was looking for info in the midst of my problems with this 250R. People really don't seem to like to admit shortcuts or mistakes. I hope that these videos can help people when they come across a similar situation.

My mom bought a 250r brand new in 1990. She got pregnant with me 4 months later and the machine went into my grandmother's shed under a cover. My mom completely forgot about it until Grammy passed away when i was 23. As im helping with the estate liquidation i uncovered the thing. Still had all the warning stickers on it. Still had those rubber clutch and front brake perch covers. Mom was like "oh yea!! Shit i bought that brand new i don't even think i ran a full tank of fuel through it." I looked at her, andif she wasn't my mom i definitely would have said "the FUCKS wrong with you woman!?" Anyway i took the thing home, cleaned it up, rebuilt the carb, new gas tank, petcock, lines, air filter, oil etc. It wasn't a yfz450 but i had a ton of fun on it. For about 12 hours and it seized up. I was running it 34:1 too!! So i rebuilt the engine with a 323 bug bore kit and sold the engine. I then used that money to buy a 2005 yz250 engine, put the same 325cc kit i have in my yz250 in, all the fixins, lektron, you know the deal. Dude its night and day. Night and day. That yz250 engine is so superior man. I run it on c16 and klotz supertech at 36:1. I carry the front wheels in 3rd gear all the way up sand mountain.
@mmholling879 күн бұрын
The YZ engine doesn't have a counter balancer. I would have kept the 250R engine and gone with a modern nikasil PV cylinder from CPI. Same power as your YZ but less vibrations.

Hey Mike, one last comment here at the end. NO SHAME BROTHER! Every single racer who ever lived going back to the dawn of racing of any vehicle ever raced has patched up, modified, harbored, band-aided, fabbed, refabbed, refabbed again, and duct taped their machine in a pinch to get her across the finish line in any place, in any case. Loved watching you improvise, adapt and overcome. GREAT SHOW! Plenty of tme now to order a new piston, send out the head for re-lining and adjusting gear reatio and tune for a reliable, top of the line winner!

You should have it re nickel celled again Michael. It will work by honing it out to cross hatch etch it inside the cylinder bore good. That's the main part of it. After you hand sand it really good.
@johnhicks735 Жыл бұрын
One big thing about that piston skirt shaving is to bring it up to top Dead center first. T hen use A tool called A awl scribe. To score the outline of that area with them go over it with sharpie marker. I always make two lines the main cut line and what's called A over kill line for lead way.
@johnhicks735 Жыл бұрын
That gives you room to work with and I highly recommend practicing on A old one first.,or A cheap new one. Cause your right about one part of it you really shouldn't try to.,or can't put back what's been cut off to get the right compression stroke in that engine. I highly recommend changing it out with the exact piston to with A new one again. As A fresh rebuild. Just remember about the top dead center trick tip first. Then scribe it out and double line mark it. And take some where to have it lathe cut down to size. Leave both lines on it gives you lead way to. For more compression and power stroke that way doing like that to out of the piston. Without totally ruining it. That other piston is off balance and Intrude.,or I call it un- trude. That's what's causing the noise and vibration to.
@jbplays7302 Жыл бұрын
Michael, I have to admit, I'm like alot of the other guys that feel like you should have kept the 250r in it's MX form. But this is your channel, and YOUR quad, and you wanted a drag bike. So, I respect that! And frankly, it's a SWEET looking machine!!! The motor itself is really a work of art! I've built some really nice XC race yfz's and 450r's in the 20+ years I've been riding and racing quads. But I've never done anything that comes anywhere even close to your 250r! That bike is just MEAN AF LOOKIN!!! Dude, the sound of your voice twice in this video is ABSOLUTELY PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1. When you first romped on it, and felt the torque that bike puts out, you were so excited!! You sounded like you just might piss yourself!! LOL! 2. At about 1:09 you wound it out, and started grabbing for the front brakes, which weren't there anymore! And for a split second you thought you were either going to have to hit the "eject" button, or you might be going for a swim in that creek! Hysterical, only b/c you didn't wad it up!! Awesome video Sabo!!

Man, I felt that struggle! Recently I have been pushing hard to get my dirt bike running before the snow arrives. It's been in pieces needing a new head, valves, and a piston for the last 12 months. KTM parts are back ordered like you wouldn't believe. Anyway after finally having all the parts and getting the engine back together for the first time since last fall, I had the new piston pin seize in the rod 5 minutes into the first test ride. So I took it home are tore it down again. I decided to put the old piston back in to confirm that the new piston was the issue. Then, during re-assembly the timing chain tensioner threads decided strip out (despite using a torque wrench) halting progress for yet another week. All I've been doing is tearing this engine down and putting it back together over and over for the last several weeks. Sadly, before I could get it going I ended up having knee surgery and had to put the bike away for yet another winter in pieces. It's been painful to say the least. Anyway, it was good to see you get a win, it made me smile! Great video as always!

I currently own and built my yamaha raptor 770cc it even has a plus 3mm intake valves and plus 2mm exhaust valves 105.5mm cylinder and piston plus 5mm stroker crankshaft efi controller with many other things. I prefer 23x7 up front and 22 inch rear tires plus its geared to the moon. Still hits the rev limiter on top. 😅 thanks for the content awesome builds, and fun to watch. I also modded my daughter's Yamaha blaster, stock was around 55mph or so, now it tops out at around 70mph. Its at the limits of pump gas for compression, full port n polish even worked over the transfer ports. 34mm intake and mikuni 34mm carb, tapped with the oil injection. Its geared up on the front sprocket and went a little smaller size out back. Also went with 23x7 up front and 22 inch tires out Back. In a drag race for two high line pole lengths it will eat a Polaris scrambler 400 2-stroke, until it runs out on top. My daughter absolutely loves riding. She is 20 years old. I didn't want her riding a big heavy atv like a Polaris sportsman 500 that weighs around 800 pounds. To me thats way more dangerous of she was to roll over. 320 pounds wet weight blaster is easier to kick off from a roll over. I also freed the intake and exhaust on the blaster. Been thinking about maybe getting another blaster frame to build that YZ500 yamaha blaster. Hmmm 😉

Dude... I had a KE125 as a first bike and the piston skirt busted. Big ol chunk came out and got jammed in the bottom end bearing. I cleaned it out put it back together and it ran! The cracking skirt became a running theme on this bike. I just kept clearing it out and slapping it back together. (Like every day!!!) By the end it looked like a formula 1 piston. The skirt came up to the bottom ring so it was partially floating... This is a rotary valve intake motor so that wasn't an issue. The ENTIRE exhaust port being open to the crankcase also wasn't an issue surprisingly enough. The damn thing ran better that way I think! I ended up selling it running, with a quarter piston. Also if your rod was too short you'd be low on your deck height. so odds are your crank is stroked out excessively. Not sure if you ordered a stroker crank... You got one now though so stack up some base gaskets and open up the bottom of those ports! (Do that before replating...) Maybe your onto something, more CC's fo-sho!

I cant say this for every motor but many in history have uncovered the exhaust port on full top stroke. On a Merc outboard some do and some dont but it doesn't change performance much oddly enough. It can be just as likely to help stuff the case when the pipe echos back. Im sure these R motors have been dynoed enough over the decades to know what the verdict is.

I got a question how do you break in your 4 strokes I have a ltr450 that I’m building and I rebuilt the whole motor like new crank, piston, bearings etc. it’s all most done just don’t know how to break it in. Thanks man you are the best

You're dealing with problems any top racer deals with. If your choking on problems like this at the dune u can relate to the stress too racers have to deal with. You're just over doing it brother, just relax and try not to put so much on your shoulders, try to think of it like it's just a weekend of fun on the trails

That really did turn out great Mike ! It was beyond what I expected for sure ! Oh, and don't beat up on yourself for the mishaps on the build, you know as well as anyone of us, it doesn't always go smoothly, which in turn allows our minds to be creative and fix those issues that arise such as you did on this build. Dude, it's another Two BulTacos on the build !

@MichaelSabo Thank you for getting back to me And thank you for the info I will say I do like the new motor for 250R And I am thinking about getting one of those master cylinders for the back. For my a t c 1985 250R honda
@MichaelSabo Жыл бұрын
@dannyval778 I'm not sure if they're a direct fit for the ATC but if you email Dave, he will know.
@dannyval778 Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure they will Some of the honda 250R 4 track pare interchangeable with the ATC. My master cylinder fits on my buddy'1986 250R 4 track so I think it will.

Just wondering. What happened to the trailer you built? Did you just decide to pull a smaller trailer for the long trip?
@MichaelSabo Жыл бұрын
Yes, I still have that trailer, I just didn't want to haul it for this trip; drove around 4k miles and it's not fun dragging it.

Don't worry, bro, i'm having a hell of a time trying to bleed the front brakes on my k f x I put a plus one steering stem and I had to put longer brake lines so I went with singles 1 for each caliper and it is a nightmare
