I have 3 Wiltons and 2 Harbor Freight vices sitting on the floor. I have a semi rim that I been wanting to use for a stand and might get to it soon. I also want to make a receiver tube stand for my work truck. Your welds look good and your video has good info.

Thanks Jorge for the compliment. I have one Wilton on a bench and several real old shop vices...the large bench top like would be found in commercial or industrial repair shops. Then a few no-name cheapies. They are on work benches or stands throughout my work area. I fabbed a few reece style 2'' receivers over the years, the last going on an 85 Chevy short bed square body. I've also made up a few vice stands that slipped into the 2'' receivers. Nothing like having a vice in a remote location working by yourself. There is four parts to the vice stand video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHLMiKKvpJp5arM This series was one of my first attempts at uploading videos, so they are not real good productions at all.

@@tractorman4461 I was going to watch part 2 but decided to go to bed. I been making videos a few years and understand what you mean. I really like that vice especially the way it rotates. I need a vice for pipes as I work on oil field pipe fences often and been wanting to put one on my flatbed I built. Anyways you got some good content and now I got to find a brake drum like the one you used.

Great stand Tractorman44 and that vise with that swivel feature is really nice. I was thinking about all those times when that feature would have been dandy for the job. Thanks as always and I raise me CuppaJO to ya! DaveyJO

Daveyjo Weaver hot dang.... you keep sneaking these comment in and somehow I miss them .... LOL!!! That rotation is real handy working on all kinds of stuff like chainsaws or weed eaters and even position changes on smaller welding jobs. Thank you sir for commenting and as I toss back a swig of JO I’m wondering g how many other comments have slipped by with me unawares.....

Great job and good video, I enjoyed your straight up style. Did you have any trouble welding to the cast iron drum?
@tractorman44613 жыл бұрын
Actually I believe instead of cast iron it is cast steel which can be welded with reasonable success depending on the rod. I used 3/32- 7018, made a light root pass to heat up both materials, then immediately followed with the main pass or cap with an 1/8-7018 running a little hotter on the now warmed metal. The problem will come in when the two metals of differing carbon content cool down at differing rates from the shock of immediate heating to a high level with the hot pass. On another note, I welded spring steel to low carbon steel a few months ago. Out of approximately 35 short beads, about 8 of them cracked down the center. Thanks for the nice comment and for the question.

Have shop, more stuff, more tools and more room! So True 44Friend! DaveyJO raising me cup high cuz I can't find a place to put me cup down in the shop!
@tractorman44614 жыл бұрын
Oh man. I suffer that dilemma daily. Unless a wooden workbench is heavy built a Vice is better off free standing like this one on steel. I have my G-dads post vice from the blacksmiths shop that they mounted to a dump truck split rim back in the 40’s. This is basically just an improvement on their old idea. Thanks for taking a look see DaveyJO !! My hats off to you and Alice this fine morning sir.

Nice looking build sir. I'm curious though. If you hammer on it, does the pipe and the drum make it ring like a bell? Just curious of the transfer. Looks like I need to get in my scrap pile. Thanks for all you give us, you sure are a wealth of knowledge and ideas.
@tractorman44615 жыл бұрын
Bill Fischer good morning sir and I again thank you for such a supportive comment. No it doesn’t ring at all. There seems to be enough mass to the whole assembly that it probably deadens the harmonics of the blows to the work. That’s my theory anyway. Lol. The scrap pile is always my first stop when starting a project too. The fourth and last short video in this series shows a 3/4 hp motor/wire wheel mounted on the back half of the structural steel, adding more weight and a bit more visual balance. Thanks for taking a look backwards in the old video list Bill. I sincerely appreciate the time you take to watch sir.
