Porting My CHINESE TURBO Wastegate To Fix Boost Creep!

Fix boost creep on a turbo charger by porting out the wastegate larger. My Chinese T28 Turbo came with a really small wastegate port. In this video I'll explain what happened and show what I did to make a larger port in the wastegate to get rid of the overboost conditions I was seeing.
Basically i was overboosting BAD. by 4500 RPMs with the stock internal wastegate I was hitting my 13 psi boost cut. This won't work for my low boost setup in my Turbo Exocet. So I wired the wastegate open and did a few pulls. My Megasquirt data logs showed I was hitting 6-8 lbs of boost with the wastegate open!
I ported out the wastegate and then with the wastegate wired open I was only hitting about 1 psi on a full redline pull. This along with some spring modifications in the stock wastegate actuator allows me to now hold a 9.5 PSI level of boost to the redline as I was hoping for. My stock chinese wastegate actuator was an 8psi spring. However with doing some test with my air compressor I was able to find out that it was only STARTING to open by 8psi and wouldn't fully open the wastegate until 25 psi.
My next video will show the spring modification to the chinese wastegate actuator.

I just did exactly this to my twin turbos, I look forward to testing them out. Hopefully no boost creep. It really didn't take all that long to do either. Thanks for the video. Wastegate went from tip of pinky to thumb sized. Should help a lot.

I had to expand the dump too was hitting the flange which was too narrow, was boisting 15psi then 9 when stock is meant to be 6psi pretty is with drill and dies. 😀

I need to do this to my 97 NA. I'm not looking forward to yanking the turbo out :( I have the FM S1 Carb Legal kit and I'm unable to hold the 6/8 psi that the wastegate is set for. People say can you can try to up the boost and the creep might go away- and I have the upgrades to do that (MS3Pro, LS Coils and FF 650cc), but I'd be more comfortable knowing that I wouldn't get any creep at, even at the lower levels.

Nice fix man, most people would've just bought a new one that works without modification lol

Hey, look into this black hole. See what's there?...oh yeah, light doesn't escape a black hole. LOL Might just be me but all i saw was a couple shiny marks inside that housing. But I think we all got the gist of what you were doing and trying to show us. Way to troubleshoot and remedy the problem.

Ya the camera doesn't want to show inside there. The shiny marks are what the porting was though

Hello good man. Do you recommend this turbocharger? There are different opinions on the web. What do you think, won't it be too big to 1.8 liters?

T28 is just fine for this car. The journal bearing china turbos have a pretty slow spool up in Comparison to the really Garrett ball bearing ones

You are aware that the valve doesn't sit on the hole until it receives a signal from the actuator, it lifts from lower boost. To control this, add a solenoid boost controller.

Other way around, the wastegate actuator holds the flapper valve closed until it gets positive pressure from the turbo.

With the trench u made to direct air better to the wastegate, during time when waste gate is close, wouldn’t the air be ramming into the gouged area instead of passing through the wastegate hole(if its the u didnt make the trench)smoothly during times when the gate is in close position? Just a thought.

I'm sure there would be some turbulent air there- but with all the force that the turbo produces, I would say that it would be a non-issue. Especially if you're trying to solve an issue like boost creep.

Thanks for the video! I did all of this on my turbo, but with it wired open I'm still hitting 10 psi of boost at redline. Not sure if maybe I need to make the channel a bit larger? The channel I currently have grinded out is a bit narrow. I have the hole itself ported pretty close to the edge already, so I'm at a loss. I did notice my wastegate door when fully open is pretty close to the hole itself, could that cause this issue as well? Thanks for any help!

So when your wastegate is wired all the way open you still build 10psi???

Haha funny you ask. I'm almost done editing it. I shot it like 8 months ago and lost some files, so I had to shoot a new ending real quick. I'm guessing it will be my next video, hopefully within a week

You don't need to port the wastegate just make or buy a custom dump pipe or full turbo back exhaust system. Now you have ported it your going to have to buy alot stronger wastegate actuator spring as you have now given the the exhaust gases more surface area to push against and you will probably get lag now with it opening before it should. 🤦‍♂️

I have a full turbo back exhaust, and there isn't a dump pipe on an internally gated turbo. This is a common solution for boost creep and many companies offer this porting on new turbos

@@BuildingTheEXOCET David is clearly mistaken. The increased surface area of the flap is an interesting point though. Probably negligible to be honest.
