Im classed as a youngen but yet I can do all this and to that standard with ease.. if anything though I'd never point lead in anymore and certainly not use those clips I prefer the old school lead plugs I make myself as they're way stronger i find.. as for filler lead mate is far better.. gives way better bonding to the lead compared to mortar and under the stress movement of lead won't crack and fall out like nearly all mortar filled joints will.. Just because some people are young some of us know what we're doing and some think deeper into it then the old boys.. It's about taking pride and pushing the quality of each job further and progressing the trade.. I like the old way and do most my stuff that way but certain things you can't deny are better for longevity.. I got taught the old way doesn't mean it can't be made better
@atmywitsend19842 жыл бұрын
@@ETH85 Well said from an old guy here. Another tip you may know with lead, is only score your cut line. I always use a felt tip for fold lines. As scoring makes a weak point that could split the lead later on. Its good to know that the younger guys want to do a thorough job too. I have never used the clips for holding the lead either. They do look a lot less faffy though. I understand why they may be preferable for speed reasons. I have no idea about their longevity though,so I still use the rolled up lead wedges,as they have done for centuries.

@atmywitsend19842 жыл бұрын
You should try using a finger trowel on a small hawk,and push it directly into the joint. I find it much quicker. Still finish it off with a pointing trowel though.
@nonsheep58232 жыл бұрын
@@atmywitsend1984 yes I do it that way much better method it forces muck right into joint

I remember working in the building trade from the late 60's throughout up until my retirement. Those were the glory days, when you never see a cowboy on a job. We learned from skilled men who came before us and we passed on those skills to the younger lads. These days I despair of some bad jobs I've seen and heard done for neighbours, by money grabbing chancers. I loved seeing Will, do a video like this. He seems to me to be the type of guy who is a great teacher. Respect to Will, and all other genuine tradesmen and women.

Like the arm - mounted cleaning cloth 😊 Its important to use a weak mortar mix; a strong mix is more acidic and will corrode the lead quicker.

Neat lead work , if the lead was a little wider the angle cut would have been more at an angle rather than been vertical, not sure if the job spec was to use mortar ( muck) but using lead mate a substitute to muck , lead mate is a sealant that when the lead expands and contracts with the temperatures so does the sealant ,which avoids cracking, mortar (muck) will potentially crack ,good work ,Will not picking faults as that’s the easiest job in the world do , just passing on info on how I was taught , great videos 👍
