This is another episode following the progress of our two storey extension build. During this video of How to Construct a Lantern Roof we take you through the process step by step. Pete is initially setting out joists for a lantern roof and is then aided by Tony in fixing the perimeter noggins. Tony then explains about the roof lantern upstand and fitting that. Pete then runs you through how he went about creating a fall on a flat roof by cutting tapered furring strips. He explains about the use of 18mm hardwood ply and fitting it correctly using compound miter joints where necessary. Then Pete and Will set to completing the job.
PLEASE NOTE: we’ll endeavour to answer questions and comments as soon as possible depending on our work schedules.

It's the little things, like cutting off the bolts on the coach bolts for the double joists, then ensuring no sharp edges by using a grinder. Then planing the top of the joists because 1 was a couple of mill proud. Nice to see craftsmen who still have pride in their work. Really enjoying your Vlogs

Hi Anthony much appreciated but there are many awesome carpenters on KZbin, it’s funny I see myself as a carpenter it’s funny how we can get stereo typed to joiner cabinet maker I think it’s mainly the U.K. in a lot of countries a carpenter can do everything but it’s not the case here in the U.K. I do think that the trade is being diluted because of the Government making bad decisions in education training. Roger has a crack video on Building Material Fails but he speaks about a lot of things that should be addressed but don’t because the people In charge don’t understand the animal all the best Tony 👍

Great work but at 6:52 the point about plywood vs osb for roofing is a common mistake: osb is designed for roofing where risk of condensation is present. The glue/resin in osb is a lot more resistant to water vapour. Unless you submerge both osb and plywood into water for weeks, plywood would dry out faster but that's just a point on paper and not a concern in real world roofing application.

Hi, is OSB more stable than wbp plywood, (ie less expansion and contraction). with the two flat roofs ive done the felt always seems to lift up at one edge when ive used ply, ive installed up quality polymer vapour barrier on first decking layer, celotex, then another ply decking , breather felt membrane layer, then felt and top felt, but still this issue of felt expanding on one edge. maybe i fitted the ply not tight. i hardly left any gap for expansion.

Cuts bolts off with rip saw and then grinds them smooth, in stead of just using the grinder to cut in the first place. I'm interested if its the prices they charge their clients or the money they make from the videos that lets them be able to afford to do works to this degree. Still great to see things done how they should be. would love to be able to take my time like this and put love into a project.

Hi Snow I think for me personally it’s a time thing, doing one right helps to do the next phase easier and more efficient. Many a time I stand back and think about this phasing things in a certain way, years ago I used to see people do something then moan later saying I new should of done thus to make my life easier or pick up the wrong tool and just make do. Prices are something we don’t discuss but never been short of work even in the bad recession, until 18mths ago I didn’t have a website absolutely nothing just word and mouth, the other thing which is key in any project is everyone teamwork it so important in the build process brickies, plumbers electrician plasters scaffolders, used to work on big sites many moons ago and everyone was at each other and why, the way I see it and been trained never compromise love what you do with passion all the best Tony 👍

Really professional and conscientious people, but you made a few fundamental mistakes that you should correct. 1) You need joist hangers at all right-angle connections between timbers fixed with twist nails - this skew screwing is completely wrong (especially around the trimmed opening), and is actually a very weak joint. 2) You should be using timber connectors (spiked washers) between bolted members - it's the connector that allows the individual timbers to act as one. Also you shouldn't pull in the head of the bolt so deep. 3) Your drawing may show what you've done is correct , but notching joists into RSJ is not now considered to be not good practice. They want you to fix a timber along the length of the RSJ and fit the joists on hangers. You can see you've had to notch out quite a lot of your joists depth to get them into the RSJ - thus reducing the joists load capacity. Not withstanding what I've said you are clearly a cut above the average carpenters operating today.

@georgethompson997
@georgethompson997 3 жыл бұрын
@@CDLANEY1520 Yes, it does require joist hangers. There is ALWAYS a load on the roof - 1) the load of the roof itself. 2) the load of snow, 3) other external loads, e.g. scaffolding from future works. NHBC and Building Regulations require the use of joist hangers on right -angle connections of timbers. Years ago the carpenter would cut a tusk tenon, but nowadays the hanger is the correct method. Screws are actual a very weak method of connecting timbers together like this, as in fact screws snap (because they're hardened) much easier than you'd think. When fixing roof timbers together (not in this application , but generally) the nail is a much superior fixing.

Hi Tom starting a company is not about pricing its a very tiny part of the bigger picture. Please watch a video by Justin of Brickright building and Landscaping he’s on KZbin really cool guy he talks about all the consideration of running a business, really sound advice. 1, Overheads, these are things like Insurances on every thing, mobile phone, clothing, etc etc huge list add these up and Break them down into a day amount ie £3000.00 divide 365 days. 2, How much money are you going to charge a day, if you get say £180/ day you then add on profit to cover your overheads and then still have profit when overheads have been paid this is we’re people make a massive mistake never charge day rate with out profit. First impressions to clients. Pricing a job break it down into sections like footings, drains, brick to DPC, Ground slab, Super stucture to first floor then to Roof, then Roof, scaffolding there are also independent Estimating online companies that will do a full Bill of costing for a small amount of cost and also some merchants Please watch Justin on KZbin I wish you all the luck and best in your new venture. You mean the steels that were installed to hold up the rear of the existing house? @@mickgreen8672 hi Mick use the spec Tony described above, it’s in my mind the best Vapour control(Alutrix600) on the market fantastic insulation and a top quality Single ply. But then you wouldn’t expect anything less from a top quality outfit like A+E.

Hi Richard yes we do but it wouldn’t be very cost effective by the time we have paid for Hotel and additional fees, could I suggest a company called Asheville Aggregates or Robin Clevett they are both on KZbin all the best Tony or the FMB 👍

I've noticed your videos don't have that much informative content, it's more a case of "this is how we do do it" and not so much of, this is how to do it...But I suppose it's good advertising for your firm, and of course you pick up a lot of the usual arse kissing comments along the way
@BuildWithAE
@BuildWithAE 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Green Genes if you look at the content on the channel 95% of the time we go into full detail but on this occasion I didn’t get it spot on with instructions but you have to understand or not we have to get the work done, earn a crust and try and film and we can’t always get it right. Regarding arse kissing comments well that’s your point of view and we have to respect that but do you think it constructive, received in a proactive way but if it makes you feel better then give yourself a Pat on the back. Actually maybe you should have a go at filming and share what ever knowledge you have all the best Tony 👍 have a awesome weekend

@@BuildWithAE Oh I'm sorry that you thought I came across as being proactive...hey, it was merely an observation...but I wasn't aware that my comments were meant to be constructive (I must try harder). And as for you suggesting that I do some filming myself, well in all honesty, I really couldn't be bothered, or in fact find the time to do that, but apart from that, I'm probably not as conceited as what you are...enjoy the rest of your day. Over and out

@@vespagd67 point out where you claim I was slagging someone off, my comment was based purely on an observation, and that's my opinion. But the fact is, if you're going to put yourself out there like these guys do, then surely you have to expect some criticism...
