I love this cat house! The one thing I learned about cats is to keep their food away from their "lair". The food will draw predators and unwanted animals to where they are sleeping and need to feel safe. Having a totally different place for the food and water is best. Keep on loving your kitties:)

Yes you are absolutely right. We have had raccoons and possums get inside the cat house. We have trapped and relocated several raccoons, possum and foxes away from our house. After this video we started feeding both cats away from their cat house. You cannot leave any food outside because it will attract wild animals. Unfortunately, in the early hours of September 22, 2020 a wild animal (maybe a raccoon) attacked Buffy the brown tabby cat inside the cat house; she was killed on the deck behind our house. Funny Thing.... I didn't know this ether. I just thought the Mommy cat was just really, really Hungary. Evey time I'd put food in the Cat House she would eat every last bit. So I'd give her more. After the 3rd helping...... she snapped at me. Later I found out that she wasn't Hungary, she was getting rid of the food to keep predators away from her litter. Sometime people (me) think their helping, but, we're actually causing harm. Now I keep their food far from the Cat house.

@@questmatrix What would you recommend on how to keep food? I am planning to keep an automatic dispense out for our feral. But I do not want to keep it out as there are opossums around our backyard and they eat the food :/

​@@sz2474 I am not exactly sure. Our experience has been to not leave food outside because it brings in all of these small critters. I manually feed my one remaining feral a few times a day. We live in a subdivision in the country with lots of wildlife so maybe a more populated area could have a feeder. I would secure a feeder so raccoons don't get into it.

An old camping ice chest makes a good shelter too. Its already insulated and easy to cut a entrance hole. I find them at thrift stores, flea markets and sometimes on the side of the road. Thanks for loving ferals and getting them fixed.

I have 4 feral kittens. I feed and water daily. They live under a few cottage decks. Managed to TNR only 1 so far. I plan to fix other 3 before more kittens come. It is just starting to cool off. I have a huge container. A neighbor has agreed to help me add to this for a cat shelter. I have 1 heated bed, 1 heating pad and an insulated blanket. I am going to order more supplies. I will not see these babies cold, hungry or pregnant due to some human not neutering/spaying their pets. Thank goodness for TNR and people who have made donations. I spend over $200 on feral cat food per month. I am blessed to always make it through. I also have a rescued dog and feral cat inside.

I feed a small colony of cats plus have rescued a bunch that live with me. I build them all cat beds out of Rubbermaid containers and stuff with straw but this is pretty amazing!! Thank you for your compassion!!! I hope this video inspires people to do more...

Look cozy and big. Very nice. The only thing that I'll add will be several small hole at the side top for ventilation. And maybe some rope hanging, for let say, for some reason the cats want to climb - but the raccoon may spoil the idea. Anyway, the cat house is really nice.❤

I feed 12 cats, including my 3 and am about to adopt another one of the ferals whose littermate got run over. Costs me $ 100 a month in cat food but I won’t let them starve. My 3 were born at my building all all 12 are neutered or spayed, i’ve had a number of strays in the past that I adopted, not including a couple of girlfriends.😜

George Senda I'm just saying Thank you. I love cats and they are my life and as I call them my kids. I feed 1 feral cat (male) I have 3 outdoors too. All male cats 2 been fixed except the feral and 1 of mine. I have more in the house all fixed. My life revolves around my kids. Every blanket I get winds up being theirs. They are separated they have there own rooms. Some just don't get along. It's alot of my time 2 times aday feeding and cleaning. I spend 200. A month. Food and litter, plus paying back of credit card for getting them fixed and shots.

.Calling a cat Federal is mostly a MYTH cat can become indoor cats in the first place they wind up outside because people that don't care and move to places that don't accept pets leave them out, oh i hate heartless people without any sense of empathy or compassion. Being an animal advocate for 9/years on Facebook and creator of a Community page called (Help Fight The War Against All Animal Cruelty Today) we seen read and see endless stories news and Petition. Another thing PLEASE SPAY & NEUTER BE RESPONSIBLE DONT CONTRIBUTE TO THE PROBLEM OF OVERPOPULATION AND UNWANTED PETS! OH AND CALL A XAT COALITION TO GET THOSE CATS OUT THERE FIXED!! There are organizations that do that they trap spay & neuter then return do your research for your area. Respect animals they deserve it and we owe it to them.

That is realllllly cute! I have my first outdoor cat and have been looking for the longest time on what I can build for him so that he can be warm and safe, and still see around him since he's used to being wild and needing a full range of view. They are precious and are thankful. Thank you. What I do is feed 2 times a day. Morning and evening. Then take the bowls away. They know what time is feeding time everday.

That's just precious. We have either 4 or 5 here that I see coming to eat the scraps I put out for them. Most of the ones here are very feral and won't let us get close to them, so we just watch them out the window as they come and go. I'm fixing to put something outside for them this Winter too. It won't be as nice like the kitty condo you have , but maybe we can build one like that next year. Gotta protect all the fur babies whether they are officially ours or not.

You should try to get them fixed. TNR is what it is called. Your colony can grow extremely large, extremely fast without them getting fixed. Lots of places have discounts/vouchers to help cover the cost of fixing ferals. ==== thanks for helping the cats!!!

Try to capture them and spade and neuter them too so you aren't overrun with cats.

it would be a good idea to find out if you have a trap/neuter/release program in your area. some people will do this for free or low cost to help with the over population problems. i found a mom and litter living under the neighbor's back porch. i waited until i could see that the kittens were somewhat independent before starting the trapping process...i trapped the mom and she escaped the trap once. the 2nd time she was caught we got her to the vet to be spayed...she bit the nurse so we had to report it to the dpt of health. we put her in a cage in our bathroom. in the morning she was gone! she had broken the cat carrier and broke through a window screen. the nurse had to have rabies vac. i was able to trap the Tom Cat and get him neutered...that was an unexpected surprise! i was just looking to get mom and her kittens and apparently he was still lurking around. he is now neutered. I waited so long to start trapping that the kittens started to go off on their own or were killed :-(... one kitten remained in the area. i found her crying and looking for her mom and litter mates. i tried to catch her 3 times but she was too lightweight to spring the trap. finally, i watched her enter the trap and then made a loud noise to startle her to get her to jump and possibly spring the trap! it worked!!!!!! We brought her inside to socialize her. it's been a month of really hard work but she is now a gorgeous sweet little kitten that we can pick up sometimes. we bought a large dog cage where we put litter, food, water, bedding, a carrier for hiding and lots of toys. we just let her out of the cage and she and our other rescue are having a blast together. we named her Bindi...which is an intersting story. When we found her, there was a hole in her forhead where a Botfly larvae had made a home. she apparently had been able to expell it but the hole had not healed. we gave her medical care and she is fine. if you look up the word Bindi it is the red dot that Indian women put on their forhead..which is right where the Bot Fly hole is/was...anyway, i thought that was pretty cool. i didn't know the meaning until after I named her. The moral of the story is...def. get them neutered and get help. it's harder than you might think!

😾Very well made!😾Growing up my mom was the Mother Teresa of Animals in our neighborhood! We always had litters of kittens from the farms brought to us..mom got them vaccinated and adopted out..But also had injured birds..bunnies and a squirrel that some little boys found clinging to its dead mother on a roadside..Rule if thumb on these animals was a handtowel/baby animal nursery & carnation evaporated milk!..The squirrel was awsome and when he was independent..he went to a protective sanctuary..God bless you for putting work and time into caring for these guys..Have 2 myself aside my 2 indoors..i ordered a nice weatherproof house for them..But yours..maybe ill see if my dad will do that next summer!

I'm looking for a new design. This is ideal. My feral's house came from our local society and I'd like to be able to give it back to them for use somewhere else. I do the same with mine. Heating pad on the lower setting. I'm in Canada so sometimes I have to turn it up a notch. She loves it here. We love her. She's our number 5. I love people who do this for these special, loving creatures. I love them all!

thank you for sharing. we have 2 gorgeous black cats to shelter. we think they were abandoned when a neighbor down the street moved. one seems semi-feral. the other is very affectionate. we live in central ny where winters can be deadly for homeless people and animals. we will be building a house for them and i like your design. we make sure that cats we feed are spayed and neutered. we are lucky to have a local SPCA that has low cost clinics. it's really important to spay/neuter outside cats.

Quite sure it would help a lot of people around the country who take care of community cats and are willing to go the extra length to build better cat shelters but just don't know how it would be much appreciated and anticipated.

At this time it's not possible for us to post a step by step video... The cat house is built on a small scale kind of like a shed. There are lots of videos on KZbin that show how to build a shed. The bottom platform is framed out with plywood on top and bottom with insulation inside. At a later date, my husband added another piece of wood on top of the porch to extend the size since it was a little too small for two cats to sleep on. The front door has an actual swinging cat door that you purchase. In the beginning I had to remove the clear plastic door because Buffy the brown tabby could not be taught how to push it open and go inside. So I used velcro inside and added two fabric pieces that the cats could figure out how walk inside. Since Buffy has since passed away (I have a memorial video of her), I added the clear door back and trained Sammy the orange tabby how to go inside and outside. Thank you for your big heart for wandering animals We have a small farm in the NE part of the state and it's an area that people have no problem with just dropping off animals. Well I cannot allow animals to go hungry and without shelter so we have done the same. On our property we cleaned out an old pre-existing shed and in the winter we insulate it with hay and old blankets. There's enough room inside so they can eat so they're not out in the weather Good to know there are others like myself who understand our responsibility to animals; feral and domesticated
