I Created The Most High-Tech Home For Neighborhood Felines--You Won't Believe What Happened Next!

I have built a Ηouse (shelter) for stray cats in my neighborhood. As I saw that most people are not interested in them, I thought of offering them a small gift.
The construction is made of pallet wood. I have also installed a heated pillow, a WiFi camera, and a light. I power all these systems from an old computer power supply which I call a "control box".
The food is transported by a crane, which I control remotely via a smart phone, to make the crane, I use the ARDUINO UNO.

My apology ** You must see my effort in taking care of the cats with what I have. In fact this house has room for 2 cats. But I made it with the materials I had. I repeat that in the future I have other projects like this. Because my time is limited, I can not build anything yet. Another problem I face is with the neighbors. @@heidiedvardsen3853 Here as in other places they have a program called TNR (trap, neuter, return). No more kittens, no rabies, and they are returned to where they were captured. The animals have a chance at life rather than simply being euthanized. (You can tell them because they nip a bit off of one ear.) That's empathy. I made a difference for one, she naps with me in the recliner, her forever home.

It could also have been someone's first project, and they could learn a lot for future builds. And pallet wood can be any type of wood; I have used pallets made from red fir, red oak, white oak, pine, and even lemon eucalyptus. That is terrible a cat froze. We had single digit temperatures and none of my feral cats got frostbite at all and did not freeze. But they had never been house cats. They buried into holes they dug into the ground and came out in midday to eat a whole lot and drink a lot of water and they did fine. But of course we were home to hear them at the door and feed them heavily. We only have 4. But I think perhaps a bald eagle got one or two a couple years ago. The eagle lived 15 miles away and suddenly police died my yard every day a whole summer. I thought surely she would return up north but she had eaglets and had exhausted her other prey closer to nest. circle of life happens unfortunately. :(((. Never saw it get cats but I assume. We lived edge of town and foxes, wolves, birds of prey etc.

Ahhh sorry for that experience. But I’m sure that the cat was sick and died. And because of this you are thinking that he froze to death. Their body gets stiff very fast in low temperatures. His sickness could be a result of cold weather of course. Or poor health which lead to not being able to find enough food and be ready for winter. That happens to many cats. That’s why they are born 5 -6 . Because one or two will live.

If there's fleas anywhere around this cats and they sleep in this warm .bed house well after a while they will multiply like crazy coz fleas like a warm spot too amd soon cats will be so infested it will bot be fun for them ,cushions and heater only good for cays where the fleas ate controlled fleas lay many eggs and can multiply very fast.

Irresponsible pet owners who don’t have their critters spayed or neutered or regularly vetted are the reasons for feral animal populations that become overpopulated, inbred & diseased. I well understand the necessity of population control & have seen the effects of too many feral animals in one area. However, a few feral critters here and there in the city helps keep rodents at bay & is better than using harmful chemicals or methods to control rodent populations. When visiting NYC, I didn’t see any feral critters or rodents running loose. However, I did see a massive amount of pigeons wherever we went. I’m sure that’s not the only bird there was but it was the only kind I remember seeing. Birds can fly & get away. If they can’t - well, sadly, it’s survival of the fittest. Besides, what about the worms & bugs that birds eat? Their lives are sacred too. They just want to live. Lol! We can’t stop or take responsibility for animals that prey upon other animals. All we can do is take personal responsibility for our own actions and consider how our actions will affect others before we act and choose the best path. So, if you just have to have a pet, be responsible and have them vetted & don’t just toss them out by a dumpster if you can’t keep them any more.

​@King Joffrey no they don't. I take care of a feral cat family - and spend many hours watching them (along with my own indoor cats). They ignore the birds feeding from my bird feeder for the most part - and when one rarely gets stimulated by the activities of a certain bird, the birds seem to signal each other and all take off --chattering and chirping in the trees until the cat gives up. They're more interested in mice, voles and moles in the ground, but are so well fed they seem to have little interest in hunting. At night they sleep in the little houses I've provided for them --I know because I stay up late and check on them with a flashlight. They're accused of killing birds when birds are predated on by OTHER BIRDS as well - and by so many other creatures, while cats take all the blame.

@Shadow Watcher A guy in California is making tiny houses for the homeless in LA. They are about the size of a dumpster, so they can fit almost anywhere. They have a lock and an overhead light, and coat hooks on the wall. The Mayor tried to tow them away, but a lot of locals fought back to keep them. Those who have one can now sleep warm and safely, and can even leave belongings in their house when they are out trying to earn money.🖤🇨🇦

This is great!!! I've done similar things for kitties in my part of the world. There are very low voltage wires made for wrapping water pipes to keep them from freezing, I use them to create warm floors in the shelters I make. It costs very little to keep them on for the entire winter and it makes me feel good knowing they have a warm space to call their own. The world has become such a harsh place for all creatures, great and small, the only way for me to feel happy anymore is to help others. I'm glad I have the knowledge and skills to be able to do so. I'm very glad to see that other people like you are doing the same!!!! It gives me a bit more hope that not all is lost!! Thank you for being a good person!!!!

If she actually cared for her cat,and truly loved him she would teach it to be a home inside creature and not left to hunt for his food outside..she thinks cats have free food(other life) outside that she does not have to pay for..she then has more monies for her daily drugs an booze habit. Not only the poor cat is punished an has to fend for itself..but everything else suffers as well. So when I see him hunting,I shoot him with a water pistol everytime,then feed and give water to him..overtime the death toll has slowly gone down thanks to someone actually caring..just one person." When I was a kid we had so many stray cats in the neighborhood, so I used to take cardboard boxes, cut holes at the front so the cats could go in and out, and put cushions and blankets inside so they could be comfy. I would also sneak out food and water to leave next to the boxes. One day I saw a cat had given birth inside one of my boxes! It warmed my heart so much. But what you do here dude, is so next level. Need more people like you.

You can! Use a simple Rubber made storage container. Flip it so the lid is the base. Cut an entry hole (just one hole. No need for 2). insulate the inside by gluing those cheap silver car window shades. Fill It with straw for the bedding. It's plastic so it's water tight. 2 or 3 kitties can fit inside❤️

@@takapitcha NO need to flip the Rubbermaid boxes. Use the lid as is (so it can be routinely lifted and cleaned inside yearly). I've done this, lining the inside AND lid with solid foam insulation left over from construction work, backed with aluminum foil and ducttaped along the seams (cut with a sharp knife to fit). My husband drilled an opening in the back for the K&H solid outdoor cat heating pad we bought (I've done several now so the heaters have gotten fairly expensive, but the first one I bought 7 years ago is still going strong) - and plugged them into our outside outlets. I create a door with a flap by only cutting down across and up again, then forcing the plastic up over and over to create a 'roof' over the door (helps to keep snow and rain out). To reinforce this I shoved a quarter-round piece of wood up and under the flap, duct-taping it into place. All of the raw edges were ducttaped and a fleece cat bed put in over the heater (I toss them and replace annually. They make the toastiest cat homes but aren't pretty like this one, although I've also bought 3 pretty solid wood 'cat condos' from chewy - also installed the cat heaters inside. They don't look overwhelming outside on my front patio for the little feral cat family I take care of. If I had this man's skills I'd build my own but I also have hand/wrist arthritis so must depend on buying them now. I LOVE the camera and his method of feeding them from on high. We're in a single family home so can put out paper plates of food (makes life easier, and the neighbours don't object since we clean up and our homes are a good distance apart), You work with your situation - and his is a wonderful solution for his. Kudos for his great job!

Flipping it also makes the interior space larger, allowing more cats to share the space. Using electrical bed heaters inside a cat cave that will (I emphasize WILL) get wet, is risky. Would you sleep in a wet bed thats plugged in?

@@ElizabethGS I really wish people would stop using cloth bedding in feral dens. Cloth beds trap fleas. Feces. Urine. Lice. Ticks. Bed bugs. Water. And mold. They never dry in winter and they stay cold. Use straw. Like they do in wildlife reserves. Like they do on farms. Like they do in sanctuaries. When have you ever seen a lions den at the zoo use a fleece bed? They use straw. Follow what the experts do. Use straw. It's dirt cheap and naturally warming.

​@@takapitcha You must have missed where I specified that my cat houses have HEATING PADS which are plugged in from October through April (NorthEast USA). They're made of hard plastic (not the ones our friend here uses). I buy fleece cat beds specifically because I tried the straw and the cats hated it --and dragged it out. MY little houses (we now have 6 of them--is that a sufficient number to please you?) which are used daily all Winter - and a couple of the 'twins' double up. They LOVE their fleecy beds. These cats have all been TNR'd. Are all but indoor cats. Come when I call, allow me to skritch their heads, talk to me when I'm outside feeding them and giving them water (twice a day), and otherwise hang out on my front stone patio. Another neighbour feeds them as well, so they're fat and healthy. The fleece beds DRY quickly because of the heating pads beneath, for your information. There is no 'feces or urine' in these houses because these cats are incredibly clean, grooming each other constantly and do their business far outside of the houses - in my huge, wooded backyard, in fact. I know that people who deal with wild ferals use straw...MY situation is not similar, so your lecture isn't called for. We also toss the fleece beds which don't cost much (roughly $7 - $10) every Spring when we clean out each house thoroughly. The cats will still use the homes after the heaters are unplugged, to shelter from rain, especially since the houses are placed on my outdoor benches or under my bay window and overhang where they don't GET wet. Get it now?
