In today's video I will be talking you through how I use the Rolling Weekly in my Bullet Journal! This is my favourite weekly layout of all time, and I actually made a video on it 2(!) years ago on this channel (which you can watch here if you're so inclined: • BULLET JOURNAL WEEKLY ... )
I have since learned that the rolling weekly (also known as a running task list) comes from a form of future planning called the Alastair Method, which you can read about here: bulletjournal.com/blogs/bulle...
The rolling weekly is a great alternative to a standard daily or weekly spread in your bullet journal if you're someone like me with lots of tasks to get done that don't have a specific deadline.
Give it a try and let me know what you think!

I love the two two day spread. I would love it if you would partner with a company and make one with the weekly task list in an 8x11. I would love to share what other pages I would want included that I feel are essential. I cannot t find what I need being sold today and it is based on your two two day weekly spread with task list.

I started using the rolling weekly this month, but instead of a place for just events/ appointments, I use a circle and it goes in the list with everything else.

I'm just starting my first bullet journal and I felt that the typical monthly/weekly spreads were going to be too much work for my ADHD brain 😄. This video just showed me the exact method I need! I'm happy I saw this video before I'd get annoyed to transfer the tasks again and again and i'd stop using it altogether! Thank you so much! 😃

I hope you've been able to keep up with it. I got overwhelmed even though I set realistic goals (fellow ADHDer here 👋). So I'm getting back to it sans traditional bujo. I got the rocketbook reusable journal and so far I LOVE it. I love being able to erase stuff and start over. If I have a writing type-o (probably from dysgraphia) or smudge it, I can just use my water brush pen to wet down the offending mark and start over. This has been really helpful in my attempt to figure out a new system. Because if it's not working out for me, I just wet it down, wipe it up, and can try something else.
@Lyssadarling22
@Lyssadarling22 2 жыл бұрын
Oh, if you are thinking about the rocketbook just know it does have its drawbacks. For my brain, they're nothing compared to the alternative. The ink comes off really easy, almost too easy. I flipped the notebook so I could write using my left hand as a hard surface. It's a bit hot in my upstairs rooms and some of the ink transferred to my hand. It was still legible and now I'm overly cautious when I'm not using a proper writing surface. Heat can make the ink disappear, but freezing the book can bring it back. If you don't erase within about 30 days or so, the pages may stain. However, you can use a damp cloth diluted with alcohol and carefully remove the stain. You just have to be careful since this may remove the dots. Most people said they didn't have issues removing stains. I think the biggest inconvenience for me is smudging. The pages are a smooth gloss which allows the *Frixion pen ink to be removed easily. This means that it also takes about 15 seconds to dry before you can close or flip the page. It's not really a big deal. So far, everything has been legible the few times I managed it. Oh yeah, and the Frixion line of pens/markers/highlighters are the only kind that can be erased. Some people complain that they run out too fast so the increased cost isn't worth it, but they also aren't using the Rocketbook. I imagine the Rocketbook uses less ink because the page isn't absorbing it, it's sitting on top of it. I have no idea if anyone is actually interested in it, but I hope this helps anyone who is.

@@Lyssadarling22 If you use a finer point, there are less issues with smudging. Wasn't sure what I should use to do a bullet journal. I have some Rocketbook journals

This was so useful as it actually was focusing on the BuJo setup and use. Many videos spend so much on the decorating that the functionality gets lost. I just discovered the Alastair method and find it useful. But I am still tweaking it to figure out what works for me. Rewriting daily is simply irritating, just like you said. Thank you for a very useful video!

I like the soft schedule /floated task feature because it solves the problem for people with changing schedules. I may also use a half circle for little tasks (about 30 minutes orless than hour) that I can do before or after workdays, to differentiate from bigger tasks (hour or more) which I'd use a full circle.

I saw your video last year and that completely changed my bullet journal method. I'm at university so I have lot's of tasks that need to be done in various days. This helped me to see the progress on my projects and save me time since I don't have to rewrite tasks. I find out very useful to ad a vertical line for the day that a task need to be done, like a due line, so I can easily see how much time I need for a task. It's difficult to explain, so I will try to "draw" it: M T W T F S S . . . | . task This task HAS to be done before Friday

Discovered this video about a year ago and it changed everything. Because I was writing larger journal entries and meeting notes in my dailies, my task list was disappearing onto previous pages frequently. If I don’t see the tasks, I don’t remember to do them and I was getting frustrated with rewriting my tasks every couple days. With this weekly set up, I use the subsequent pages for journal entries and notes but keep my page marker on the weekly spread for quick reference. Thank you for this video.

Hello Elizabeth from a fellow Canuck. I come to you from Ottawa. THANK YOUUUUUUU for this video!! I finally understand -clearly, the concept of rolling weeklies! I stumbled upon the bullet journal notion late in 2020 and fell head-over-heels with the concept (I am, after all, a self-confessed stationary nerd). I have been doing bullet journaling (trying to) since January 2021. Since then I have watched a loooooooot of videos to fully grasp the notion. Luckily for me I came across your channel after doing a lot of jumping channel to channel. While i LUUUUUUUV bullet journal and my notebook, I was becoming more and more annoyed with the re-writing of my migrated tasks and activities (even though i thoroughly understand Ryder Carroll's POV on rewriting). Like you have a loooooooot of tasks in a week that are mostly soft-scheduled and found I was not as motivated as I would have liked to use my bujo consistently. I admit that using the rolling weekly/ Alastair Method was intriguing to me, but at the same time, I was apprehensive to put it in practice (I was afraid of "messing it up"...). Your video has shown me it is much much simpler to use than my brain had ever envisioned. Thanks again! :0)

I am loving the simplicity and effectiveness of this method. I picked up bullet journalling because to be more productive and to have more structure in my life. I can appreciate all the artsy spreads I come across, but seeing this level of thought and intention towards how a spread will be used productively is really what excites me. This method is simple to setup, isn't too rigid in terms of allocating space ahead of time, but still provides enough structure to be able to scan the entire list and know exactly what's going on. Not having to assign a task to an arbitrary day is where it really shines. I have lots of tasks that aren't so day specific that I just need completed at some point in the week. I've also started adding check boxes for habits since those are really tasks that require a specific date to be completed. Thank you for sharing this! Also, that camera work in the beginning was superb👌

Hi! New viewer here. I came here from the /r/Bujo subreddit, saw that this was a 13 minute video, sighed (another video overexplaining everything to hit 10+ minutes, great)... but then I actually watched the video and realised there's actually enough information in here to warrant the length. It's also produced very well, and is aesthetically pleasing while still presenting the information clearly and consisely. You don't see videos like this every day -- you just earned a new subscriber. I had the pleasure of discovering this video BEFORE I ever set up my first bujo. I'm astonished anyone can do it any other way! To me it's reminiscent, but an evolved version, of the Must Do/To Do lists that CGPGrey talks about (each day you have two lists - things that MUST be done like assignments that are due, and things that COULD be done like adding a piece to a long term project). But instead of wasting time copying out a to-do every day, this helps keep things a bit more macro Honestly brilliant.

Honestly this is kind of a life saver for my bujo, i can finally have a full page dedicated to the events/classes so i have them well organized (i have to take subjects from two different years and it was a nightmare to put organize in the other spreads). And the tasks spread is AMAZING, I can’t remember how many times i had to re write the same task bc I didn’t finish it on the day i wrote it. So glad I came across your video! I've been using a bujo on and off for 2 years and could never stick with it for longer than 3 months at a time. I just found it to be a chore rather than a help! I was just about to give up! Your faux dutch door method has brought some serious clarity to the way I bujo. I love this method! Gives me just enough space to make daily notes and schedule my days by hours and even enough space for a bit of bujo art😉 I use an A5 Thanks for sharing💞

I think I've already commented on this video, but I wanted to give a bit of an update. I LOVE this idea, and I've been wanting to use it for a while now, but haven't found the chance. And now with the quarantine, I definitely don't have enough to fill a weekly task list (since I'm still working 8h days). However! I'm planning to try this on a monthly basis! On my left page, I will have a monthly calendar with space underneath for events and appointments, and on the right page, I'm dividing the page into 5 horizontal spaces for each week. I'll test it out next month and see how it goes! Thanks again (and again!) for your wonderful videos. I find your spreads very inspiring and your voice soothing :)

I use the Alastair Method to prioritise my monthly and weekly tasks - I used the Eisenhower Matrix before but when I switched to a Hobonichi Week I started to use the Alastair Method with priorities from 1 to 4 and sometimes a column for things I’m waiting for. But I also use daily lists where I migrate tasks from the weekly list and a daily task lists. I found that I have a hard time only working from a weekly list. I also use the faux dutch door for work! 😊

Lorelei Lee Adding a priority column to the Alistair method might be a good idea. I am finding it gets a little time consuming scanning through at times. Thanks for a great tip.

This video 100% helped me but in another way than expected. I personally have a terrible memory and I need to constantly remind myself of what I'm supposed to be doing, how long it will take, and when I'm finished with the task so rewriting my progress every day isn't a bother to me. However, writing out my habits on a spread next to my mood tracker very much is lol. So I'm gonna use the tasks to track my habits weekly instead of months from now on. Thanks for sharing the information!

I Kind of use the rolling weekly, but only for homework. I usually have a two page spread for one week with one box for each day. I use the eighth box for homework and schoolrelated projects, however I don't draw a line to the day I completed the task, I just check them off once they are finished. I might try the dutch door for december, mostly because I like having a lot of space for each day, but also because I want to use up as many pages as possible so I can justify starting a new bullet journal in january😂

This is a neat system! I use something similar in my annual planning (not a bullet journal) where I separate my weekly non-day-specific tasks, but I just have a simple check box for completed/migrated/cancelled. I'm tempted to give your rolling weekly system a try in 2021. Thank you for explaining it so clearly!

I came across the first video you did and it's been crucial to keeping my very forgetful /procrastination self and madhouse work schedule on track. I use a circle for allocating the day I want to work on something and then partially colour it in if I've worked on it that day but not completed it and repeat until it's done.

Way late to the game, but I just started bullet journaling because of this Alastair Method you shared, so thank you! I do have a random question though-when you migrate a partially-completed task to the next week, how do you signify it at the start of the new week? Just one diagonal line? And then put additional bullets under any days of the new week you work on it? I feel like I’m overthinking this. 😂

I've been using a version of this in my weekly spreads for about a year now, and it is possibly the only reason I'm able to stay on top of actual adulting as I finish my degree. I had never seen a weekly spread that wasn't just a standard weekly spread. My number one issue with every previous planner I used was rewriting tasks day after day because I couldn't get around to them. I'm glad I found this system, because it kept that from happening with my bujo (which I love every other aspect of).

Excellent! Thank you, PBB. I am going to try this. I too find rewriting tasks a waste of time and I also find it disheartening, like I'm rewriting them because I just can't get enough done in a day. I don't think anyone needs a reminder that there aren't enough hours in a day ;) Thanks again!

Before I came across this video, I used a rolling weekly spread but didn’t know what it was called. Glad to know it has a name! I definitely like having most of my tasks not assigned to a certain day because I typically don’t have enough time to get everything I’d like done after work and usually don’t care what day a certain task is done.
