I've got four Bulgarian college students moving in downstairs from me for the summer. So I came here to learn a few words and now I'm like...huh? I'm in Massachusetts, where good things are "wicked awesome." This is going to be confusing. They'll ask, "8 what?"

The lady who is doing the translation has a fantastic pronunciation in Bulgarian. For a moment there I was ready to say that she is Bulgarian. She isn't, but if I were to judge by her pronunciation, I would defenitely say that she has spent quite a few years studying Bulgarian or living in Bulgaria.

"eight = awsome!" :))) It's obvious this video is for the English native speakers! I'm Romanian, and I know almost all of the Bulgarian words in this video. I've learned since childhood from the Bulgarian National Television. I was watching cartoons there. In fact, I think every Romanian child in my generation knew the meaning of "Leka nosht dehtzah!" = "Good night children!"... Every time I hear Bulgarian words I get nostalgic... :))

Matheus Galvão It is actually the same like in any other language group.If you speak English you will naturaly find many words in German and other germanic languages as sounding familiar but it usually will not make you really understanding what some Geman guy is saying-at least not all of it.Some words are exactly the same,others almost the same and many are not used in other Slavic languages at all.However differences between some slavic langauges might be very small sometimes-even so small that it is easy to understand majority of what the other says even without not being an active speaker of that second language-for Example Czech and Slovak languages are very close.They both had their different unique sound but both are easy to understand(with exception of some words or terms)to the other one because many words are the same or only little different.
@suba4749 жыл бұрын
Matheus Galvão Accent is the biggest issue... Words mostly share same origins and if you listen very carefully you can understand lots of words... but, when it comes to letters, and accents, it makes languages pretty hard to understand. I am from Croatia and I can understand Bulgarians very well, but Russians much harder because they have very different pronunciation..

it's commonly mistaken that russian and bulgarian languages are similar to each other because for most of the bulgarians born 25 or more years ago it was a necessity to speak russian.but i'm 16 and i sometimes watch russian movies with my parents - i'm telling you i do need subtitles or i would be guessing what the hell is happening now.so..they may have similarities but i wouldn't be so eager to declare them as "almost indentical"..

What's that supposed to mean? How did Russia get it's language from Bulgaria?
@TheodoreKalamov7 жыл бұрын
Ehhhhh it did not get it's language from Bulgaria, just the alphabet. Old Church Slavonic was also known as Old Bulgarian and many Slavic languages developed from it, so there is a bit of a confusion, but like with most languages, you can't just 'get' one from someone else, since there is a lot of history and development involved etc.

do you not understand how linguistics work? all Europeans literally spoke the same indo-European language, it just started changing and taking different forms in different parts of Europe as time went by. it is literally impossible to get a language FROM someone, we literally speak one language derived from Sanskrit only in different dialects... get a basic understanding of linguistics then make smart ass comments on youtube.

The truth is that some people in Bulgaria really say "awesome" (осъм) for eight instead of the correct "osem" (осем) and it is smth like a dialect but not exactly. Its like in the USA - there are a couple of ways to say: New Orleans, potato, tomato.

look guys, Americans and English are people who go to other countries like Bulgaria without even knowing the natives s language.I don't mean to offend, but they are a little lazy and they don't want to learn the language for mounts in a room,like school, so they depend on books and internet to learn the basics.Unfortunate for them it's like a Bulgarian learning Japanese...and trust me Japanese is really hard! So in this tutorial they try to explain the Bulgarian a little more American style :D
