Bull Elk Bugling at Night in Yellowstone

Each autumn, visitors to Yellowstone National Park are treated to a dramatic spectacle-the thrilling display of the fall elk rut. September to mid-October is elk mating season in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, where mixed elk herds gather to carry out the fascinating ritual.

Sleeping at Norris campground in mid Sept., cold and clear. Waking every few minutes and hearing the Geysers over in the geyser basin ; listening to the coyotes yipping at each other and the owls hooting at each other. Then 2 bull elk began their bugling at each other, close by, so, loud. I crawled out of my mummy bag and quietly sat on the picnic table. I couldn't see them but I could hear them. Shortly, the sound of rattling antlers filled the silence and somewhere in the campground, I heard another insomniac mutter softly "wow".Being 20 degrees out I slipped back into my sleeping bag and listened till dawn. This was the Best Worst night of sleep I have ever had!
