Most of my bottom rods are 6’6”. Use what you have as long as it pairs with the reel and line you have. 6’ to 7’ is preference. A rod rated for 20-40lb or 30-50lb line should be sufficient.

My father in law just got back from the OBX on a fishing trip for a surf fishing tournament. Great place to fish.

Since they sre breeders why not leave them alone. Their meat to bone rstion makes them useless to eat. I hope I never hook another one. It's a waste of a life if hooked wrong, circle hook or not.

There are reasons to catch them other than just sport. Tagging, research, and other information can be gained about the breeding stock as well as information that can change size limits. They can also be bycatch while trying to fish for slot sized fish. Even for the people that are going to fish them either way it’s good to encourage the use of circle hooks and proper release methods to keep the population healthy. You may not want to catch one but many people do. Proper care can continue to keep this sustainable.
