Hayes ran a 10.05 on dirt/cinder tracks that experts say cost spinters .4-.5 of a second. The shoes were far worse, probably an easy .1-.2, and they had prehistoric training, nutrition, medicine, etc. Sorry, but the the track and shoes alone would put him is no worse than 9.6 territory, and Bolt’s WR is 9.58. Imagine if Hayes had access to all the current training and competition? They didn’t even believe in weight training for runners back then. Imagine if he didnt retire at 22! Hayes played football because there was no money in track back then. Bolt is worth over 90 million, and ran into his thirties. Hayes may not have seen Bolt because no one has eyes in the back of their head.

The game was so much more simple back then that converting a sprinter into a receiver made sense. Defenses were simpler and passing was much more rare--and designed for big gains. That meant speedsters were at a premium. I'm glad "Bullet Bob" is in the HoF.
@daveconleyportfolio519211 ай бұрын
Also, multi-sport athletes were more common because there wasn't enough money to specialize. Two members of USC's world record 400 relay team were superb football players -- OJ Simpson and Earl McCullough. They also benefited from track training which was much more modern than football's.
