I’ve had one or two dudes who roll that at my place. I don’t have the skill/strength to compete, while at the same time keeping myself safe. The thing I find effective is to tap about 15 seconds earlier than what I would do normally. This prevents them from getting that ‘I’ve nailed this guy’ mind state, which is really the thing they were chasing. They’ve still got the tap, but it’s not satisfying AT ALL. #staytoxickings 😅 P.S this strat is just for the individuals in question. Everyone else gets a fair crack

Did my first comp after 6 months of BJJ. it was super stressful, won my first match and lost my second. I was soo overcome with adrenaline for the second match and I got destroyed haha! I think it was beneficial though made me understand what I need to work on.

Well done! So many of us have had this, or a very similar experience. That adrenaline dump sucks...

There's people who roll to get a submission on their fellow training partner and then there are people who roll to get better at jiu jitsu. I hope to always be the latter. A BJJ gym should not be adcc, IBJJF, or naga.

well said, though sometimes a mix of both is needed (comp prep and so on). Have definitely been guilty of spending too much time doing the former.

This is what I find frustrating about what seems to be the jiu jitsu community mentality. You wanna consider yourselves savages and badasses, but when you see someone being more savage and badass (than the level you’re at), you get upset. If you’re not rolling to get submissions during training, when are you ever gonna get submissions? Edit: this is with the assumption you’re rolling with people with similar attributes to yourself (weight and strength). I personally don’t like rolling with people smaller than me, but I’ll always take the challenge of rolling with people heavier within reason to prevent injury. Because I also think it’s my personal responsibility to look out for my own health and assume the other person is going 100%.

Rolled with a bigger purple belt recently as a 3-stripe white belt and he knee bared me within the first 30 seconds. I’m not a stranger to leg attacks, but it struck me as bad etiquette. What do you guys think? Also, the “spazzy white belt” is an often talked about phenomenon, but what about spazzy blue or even purple belts? Should you be getting a higher belt if you still move in an wild, uncontrolled fashion?
@bulletproofforbjj Жыл бұрын
as a former spazzy blue and purple belt myself, i think this exists at all belt levels. However management of such a characteristic should surely be considered when grading - i think i'm starting to get a handle on it now at black belt : ) As for the knee bar, sounds a little rough. However was it a comp class? ADCC rounds? were knee bars the technique of the day? Context matters there too.

@@bulletproofforbjj It was rolling in the Gi after a local seminar. Literally the first round of sparring. I know the guy had seen me roll before, but we’d never personally rolled together and I was a visitor at the gym which was his home gym.

Earlier this year a brown (now black) wrist locked me (2 st white) immediately into ‘all levels’ class roll. It was too quick for me to tap, I just loudly winced. Brown then gets the shits with me for not tapping by hand. Had some choice words for him off the mat.

@@jameswilliam2708 thats just bully behaviour my friend. Don't let that guy's bad approach taint your view of the game. There is always a jerk in some corner of society.

Seems so strange for me to hear people talk about bjj as a sport and not a martial art

whys that?

@@bulletproofforbjj I don’t think it’s wrong. I just have been involved in martial arts, my entire life starting with taekwondo then boxing I have 141 amateur fights and anybody like myself. I always considered a martial artist. It strikes me as odd that you guys don’t consider yourselves martial artist even though I would classify you as such.
