I got an 04 Lariat. Gets serviced every 3-5k miles. Runs flawlessly. It does the knocking but I’ve been told if you ain’t knocking then you ain’t rocking. 160k on mine so far. I’m the third owner. First was an old man, second was a guy who wanted a work truck but bought a lariat and thought it was too nice. Also came from a small truck so he didn’t like a big trucks gas mileage. I bought it due to us having a child and I was driving a single cab Ford Ranger at the time and needed something for a car seat. I literally love my truck. It’s such a good truck for me and tows everything I put behind it. Goes through mud easy too. I believe these trucks are how you drive them is how they last. If you push it all the time it’s gonna have problems. I typically drive it 20 miles every day 5 days a weekend on weekends it either sits all weekend or is hauling my trailers around and working. Cruise around 50 most of the time in back roads and have all windows down and back one open so ac don’t have to run or stress. I think I got me a good one

I know this video is old, but I just wanted to say that I can appreciate your work on this. I know there are a lot of KZbinrs out there buying and working on cars, as if it's a difficulty for them with their lifts, garage full of every piece of equipment you could need, and using it as a side project. Yet, here you are staying up late, getting up early, dealing with the cold, climbing in an engine bay with no lifts, access to tools you have on hand which is far less, and likely a smaller budget than those other people. This is also a critique of the euro-car snobs who continuously buy BMW and Mercedes as if their overengineered garbage sitting on their in home car lifts are some gift from God. Anyway, I appreciate the video and insights.

I've been a mechanic for 13+ years now in both Aviation and Automotive. You have a good handle on the job, one thing I will note is the lubrication of the head bolts. Rule of thumb is to check with the manufacturer about the proper torque method. Lubricating the threads will increase the clamping pressure of the bolt as the lubrication reduces the torque required to turn the bolt under load. So you need to check with the manufacturer if the head bolts are torque to yield. In that case it shouldn't really matter all that much, but the case they are not to be torqued to yield then yes that lubricating them could pose an issue if overtorquing the bolts.

Some manufacturers give a dry torque and or oil (or wet) torque, But for future reference u only need enough “lube” for the threads, u gotta be careful loading the hole with oil, it can cause a hydraulic lock at the bottom of the hole when u try to torque the fastener, giving a false torque value

Big common failure point on the 5.4 liter 3 valve Triton engines it's oil passageways being clogged from lack of oil changes or poor maintenance
@hochhaul5 жыл бұрын
Yes either clogged oil passageways or cam journal wear that causes excessive pressure loss. Some 3-valves had bad TC tensioner gaskets that allowed oil to leak and cause an oil pressure drop at the cam phasers. The oil pumps had hot idle oil pressure issues for some engines too.

A tip on the power steering pump! Remove the plastic fender (wheel arch liner), maybe the tire if you're too big around to reach in and around it and lay on your back with a couple extensions on the ratchet. If I recall, it's a 10mm bolt (3 of them). A swivel head socket is nice or at least a swivel socket attachment. Sure, taking the fender liner out is time consuming, but it makes it so much easier. Also, you have much better access to the exhaust bolts through the tire opening with the fender plastic removed. Not that I wake up every morning just to re-do it, but I like to take my family out each holiday season and we pull off the power steering as a team usually just after Christmas. It's a load of fun... With the fender plastic removed.

Excellent job Sir! I did this job 3 years ago minus pulling cylinder heads and oil pan. Main problem is defective timing chain tensioner (mainly passenger) seals that blow out and bleed off oil pressure to the engine and timing compnents. Replace with improved OEM plastic or better yet cast iron tensioners from earlier triton engines, upgrade to the Melling oil pump and use 5W-30 oil changed religously and you have solved the oiling problems with this engine. 3 years so far and it purrs like sewing machine.

Tip - If you will use a microfiber cloth to clean the front of the camera lens on your phone occasionally, you will be amazed at how much clearer and sharper your videos are. Pulled the timing cover off and to my surprise only one guide needed to be changed and it wasn’t even bad just a slight crack at the one bolt hole. My 05 5.3 3 valve is scary to drive right now. It has issues but it drives still. But it shakes, its rattles, it accelerates weird it misfires it doesnt go over 2000 rpm unless you push the gas almost all the way down. I know I need to do something or I'll hear a snap and lose power and itll be a write off. So far your video seems like the one I can understand the most. Dont get me wrong I know cars my dads a retired mechanic, I can alignment and wheel work and change fluids but this is gunna be next level. So I'm glad I got a decent guide here, along with all the maintaining documents i got online (timing positions, torque guides ) I feel good about the truck seeing a better day. I'll update at some point if I remember. But yeah thanksn

That's from their cheaper kits that don't include the OEM Cam Phasers. Right now the proper kit runs about $1200. They have a cheaper version with some other brand phasers they "say" are upgraded but seen a lot of failures. Go wath FordTechMakuloco.

Man, I wish I had your skills so I could work on my 2005 f150. Guess I'll just have to keep gambling on the dealer. I traded a perfectly good Ranger for this 14 year old truck because I don't have $60,000 lying around for a new one. I've already had my first warranty battle with the dealer and anticipate many more in the next 12 months before the warranty runs out. It is my goal to get everything fixed and not pay a dime. That'll teach them to force warranties on people who think like pitbulls. I've studied that piece of paper like a lawyer and every little noise will be scrutinized, located and fixed. When a dealership gets a used vehicle they have an obligation to make it worthy of that certification they stick on the window not caveat emptor. Wish me luck.

Robert Green yea get yourself a good reliable truck even the older ones. These new trucks are literally over priced. Be careful with those dealers they can be thief’s.

I've got one of these engines, so I know all the details. Question for you: amongst the problems with these engines is the "roller followers" [what Ford calls their valve lifters on this engine] failing? Didn't see you replacing those? Absolutely essential if you're doing a rebuild that you replace those, check out other videos on this engine that will show you the problem and result of them failing. Sorry for the heads-up! Good luck.

Man you saved a truck load of money doing the work yourself. I had to have my 99 F-250 7.3 bulletproofed and it cost me over 4 Gs. I’ve heard nothing but bad news about the 5.4. I bought a 2004 F-150 with the new 300 horse 5.4 new, but a year later gas prices went nuts and I sold it. Another quality you have Is patients, to do all that work in the driveway you really are determined. You do good work. Good luck. I’m driving an F-150 now with a 2.7 and love it.

My daughter just went through this with her 03 F150 4x4. It was running poorly(missing and jerking) too.Mechanic said it needed a new engine, metal in oil, etc. I do my own auto maintenance, but wasn't able to work on her truck due to a ruptured disc in my back. She traded that hunk-o-junk off. I'm a Ford guy, but these Triton motors are horribly designed. Kudos to you for taking a chance. Good luck. You'll be doing this again in 100,000 miles, if you still have the truck.
@bolerdweller5 жыл бұрын
Yes I thought the same thing. It's not bulletproofed he just fixed it until that turd of a motor does it again. Those seals on those cheap and poorly designed tensioners will leak again and drop the oil pressure at the top end and kill everything again without the oilpressure light coming on. Oil presure is read at the bottom end and still reads fine

@@superduty4556 You are correct. My mistake, I was thinking of my dad's 03 Super Duty. My daughter's truck was an 05. I have had to repair my dad's 03 Super Duty with the 5.4 because one of the spark plugs blew out of the head. Again, the Triton design is flawed.

How is the truck now? Hopefully you got updated OEM timing components. I just did a overhaul on my 2007 King Ranch F150 at 193,000 miles. Updated OEM timing, Melling HV340 oil pump, all 24 roller followers updated OEM with smaller squirter holes, VCT solenoids OEM and OEM spark plugs. I had a blown gasket on tensioner but no loose chain. I was lucky and did the job before a chain guid broke off there was a hairline crack in one! I think the key is staying OEM and doing job if it has never been done. I watch fordtechmakuloco on KZbin he’s a genius with the 3valves. That’s awesome you did it yourself! 🇺🇸🤙
