Attention all Amateur Herpetologists - help me identify this snake!
We were on a hike near Philomath, OR, on Cardwell Hill Trail when we came across this snake.
From my amazing Google and Wikipedia skills, I'm pretty sure it's a kind of gopher snake (Pituophis catenifer), but there are two subspecies it could be. I think it might be a Pacific gopher snake (Pituophis catenifer catenifer), or the Bullsnake (Pituophis catenifer sayi).
Some sources say that the Bullsnake doesn't live in the Willamette Valley, others say they do, other sources say the names are interchangeable (they're not).
So, anyone want to take a gander? For reference, this snake was at least 4 feet long, and was on a hill with Oregon Oaks by Marys River.
Thanks!

Hard to tell. I'm glad it isn't a rattle snake.

Yeah, we kept our distance just in case. We checked the trail, just to be sure, and it didn't have a rattle. It was, however, flicking its tail around to imitate a rattlesnake. With the underbrush, it made a rattling sound.

Bullsnake is one of three subspecies of gophersnakes in Canada. It is one of the largest species of snake in Canada, occasionally exceeding 2 m in length, and it has inspired countless reptile enthusiasts.Dec 11, 2017 and personally ive seen bullsnakes that were over 14 foot long

Gopher is my guess. I had one for a few years. This one looks very similar to that snake.

So I did some research, and there are something like nine different subspecies of gopher snakes, including the Bullsnake. So yes, it's a gopher snake, but I'm not sure which kind.

Looks like a gopher snake t me but ain’t a gopher a type of bull snake just like the eastern pine snake? I could be wrong, it’s been a long while since I wrangled a serpent myself

According to Wikipedia, the Bullsnake is a type of gopher snake (Pituophis catenifer), while the pine snake is a different species (Pituophis melanoleucus). But, they may all share the common bull/gopher/pine snake names, depending on regional vernacular. I really don't know, though.

Wow! That's one big snake! In Australia, we have some of the world's most poisonous snakes in the world! They're not the biggest, but they'll kill ya!😱👍

Yep, if this were Australia, I wouldn't have stuck around to make a video. In the US, there are up to 8,000 venomous snake bites per year, but only about five deaths. They're just not that dangerous as in Australia.
