Attention all Amateur Herpetologists - help me identify this snake!
We were on a hike near Philomath, OR, on Cardwell Hill Trail when we came across this snake.
From my amazing Google and Wikipedia skills, I'm pretty sure it's a kind of gopher snake (Pituophis catenifer), but there are two subspecies it could be. I think it might be a Pacific gopher snake (Pituophis catenifer catenifer), or the Bullsnake (Pituophis catenifer sayi).
Some sources say that the Bullsnake doesn't live in the Willamette Valley, others say they do, other sources say the names are interchangeable (they're not).
So, anyone want to take a gander? For reference, this snake was at least 4 feet long, and was on a hill with Oregon Oaks by Marys River.
Thanks!
