No worries. Thanks for apologizing. Honestly, I don't even remember what you said. I like Burmese pythons. I think they are the best pet giant snake. I just don't think giant snakes are right for most people (like you said). I do plan to cover the big three, and will cover rock pythons if I can find one.

I absolutely love how Clint basically did the "three step program" when the Milksnake started eating itself. 1. Neutralize the situation. 2. Ask if the reptile's okay, not expecting an answer. 3. "Don't do that!" 😂

When you said they're a "bite first, ask questions later" kind of snake, you weren't kidding. He just saw a snake, and tried eating it before realizing the snake he was after was himself! I think overall though, they sound like great pets and they certainly are very beautiful reptiles.

@tkreitler
@tkreitler 10 ай бұрын
@@squidgamersquidgamer5273 It depends on the snake. In my experience, getting a defensive bite from most non-venomous snakes doesn't hurt as much as it startles you. Defensive strikes are usually a quick bite and release and there is often no pain but you may bleed a little. If the snake mistakes you for food then it may hold on and chew which, as long as the snake isn't huge, may hurt slightly but still not as bad as a bee sting.

I have a very young Pueblin Milk Snake. He is the most dartiest out of the 3 snakes I own. The other 2 being a Hognose and Boa Constrictor. He's fast and a bit skittish but with time will handle better. I've had King snakes in the past and they feed very well and make good beginner snakes. Easy to maintain, hardy. I would say their weakest link is the fact that if not handled often they can be a little flighty. Clint's report of them is accurate. Well done. Good video!
@6strings735
@6strings735 4 жыл бұрын
Milks will always be more flighty than kingsnakes, hognose and boas. Always. How much they are handled will not change that. And baby milks are the worst - nothing but squirm and flight. The species that are the calmest handling as adults include the black milk, the Andean milk, oddly the amel Honduran is often somewhat calm as adult compared to its non-amel forms, and weirdly the little Mexican milk (L. t. annulata) can be a real gem to handle. The best milk as a pet in terms of pure hardiness is probably the Pueblan. Those things eat well and breed easily.

Marlin invented the concept of the ouroboros and travelled back in time to share it with the ancient Egyptians. It's canonical now and you can't convince me otherwise. Self-eating is a hunger thing. When they move around a lot, milk snakes have a fast metabolism, so they get hungry. Then, they rub themselves on you and you smell like snake and the scent gets rubbed back onto them. They're not aggressive snakes, 99% of bites are food related.

I adore how enthusiastic Clint is with these animals (and his knowledge, ohhh speak to me, Slytherin!)! It's truely infectious~. I've started to use his familiar, "Oh... HI!!!" exclamation when I see my neighborhood crows and scrub jays. It's so much fun to approach animals with that sort of careful curiosity and wonder. :3

I really wanted one of these for a while, and at first when I watched this video when looking for what my first snake would be, the idea of it possibly biting was a big deal breaker. Cause getting bit was a huge fear of mine. Now I've had a snake for a while, a sand boa, she has nailed me a few times and I feel like since a milk snake has about the same size head, that it really wouldn't be that big of a deal. So I'm making plans to get one in the future.

Hey i know its like 3 years later, but if ur still wondering ive had a milk snake for a bit now and shes bitten me a couple times. Once defensively, once because she thought i was food. Neither times did it really hurt at all and shes barely able to draw blood. So don't be afraid of getting bite by a milksnake it doesn't hurt :)

Thanks for the video. I am keeping my 1 year old Honduran milk snake in a tub and am super excited to set up a nice display enclosure for her. Super easy to care for, but took a little longer to socialize than most other snakes but this is probably due to my individual who happens to be a spaz. Keep up the good work!

Love your videos man. Best reptile channel out there and you're always so positive. Are you thinking about ever talking about the best pet amphibians or inverts? And reptile-wise you still need to make a video about chameleons.

I got to meet a very cool milk snake today. I went to a very awesome local reptile shop and held their beautiful Honduran milk snake. She was very determined to try and get inside my shirt, probably because it was nice and warm and dark in there and she was totally delightful. I definitely plan to get one once I have more experience with reptiles.

Just got a tangerine Honduran Milk Snake today. They had me get it out at the pet store because it bites a lot and was mean. It hasn't tried to bite me yet! Such a fast snake compared to my ball python and BCI. Thanks for the great video Clint. You're a legend! 🤘🏻

I've had friends that had boas and pythons. A couple even had pet rattlesnakes (that I would NEVER have...as the old saying goes, 'you are going to eventually get bit'!). As a kid, I had 'grass' (rough and smooth green) snakes, racers, garters...but my favorite, and I remember him to this day, was a simple rat (corn) snake. I grew up on a farm, saw snakes frequently (we had gopher and king snakes EVERYWHERE. Nothing like gathering chicken eggs in the morning, only to find what-at-first looks like a small eastern diamondback laying on a clutch of eggs!). I happened to be in our feed barn (hay bales, whole field corn on cob still, etc.) and as I walked in, HE DROPPED ON ME! (he had been up on the rafter, apparently mouse-hunting). Of course, you 'name them as you see them'...so he became 'Airborne' the flying corn snake. I liked to have jumped out of my skin until I could visually identify him. He just lay there for a second...I think it took the breath out of him. I picked him up, carried him up to the house (my mother allowed NO SNAKES /NO REPTILES in the house, due to a frog incident when I was younger)...so I found a box, threw an old shirt in there, put him down while a ran a bowl of water...and used a kitchen screen window as a 'top'. Mother had a fit, of course, to find this on the back porch...but he was very calm, hilarious to watch...and after the third mouse or so he caught (where I made the point, unlike the barn cats, he DID NOT regurgitate the mice into her shoes, on the porch, in the yard, etc.), she let me move him into a terrarium before winter set in...with the 'deal' that I didn't take him out in my room (which I did daily). He was a truly-wild Corn Snake, that had a better disposition than one raised in captivity! As for the 'best 5' pet snakes...everyone can have their boas and pythons...even milk snakes (which I perceive to be rather lethargic compared to a corn snake). Me? I'll take the corn snake every time. I don't want a 'complex, complicated, possibly-dangerous pet'...I want one that is sociable (that you can hold, let explore some - even while out and about, benefit the area (pythons aren't going to 'bug hunt' for you...corn snakes will clean up crickets, small spiders, moths...pretty-much name it, if they see it...they remain pretty hungry, all the time compared to most-other snakes, other than maybe racers...but their attitude is pretty hostile, too). The 'point score' really 'misses' one factor about 'pet snakes'...which would shake out 'do you want them as a close, daily-handled pet'...and that is 'how frequently do they bite, and if they bite, how severe is the bite' (10-ft pythons need not apply, in this case)...a corn snake weighs MAYBE 3-4 pounds, max...and other than MAYBE breaking the skin, you aren't going to need stitches afterwards! My wife's 'Henrietta' (Reticulated Python...she had when we married...HUGE animal, rather bad disposition, and at 21-feet, she weighed almost 105-lbs! More than once, she got Henrietta to 'circle our couch' like some strange, beautiful green giant rope...with head looking at tail - just for photo-ops and group talking points! She needed NO HELP getting up into bed...luckily you could tell when she was under the blanket!) bit EVERY SINGLE PERSON to ever touch her, but my wife...several were injured pretty-bad (again, if you are a 'casual petter' and don't know about them, don't get near them...big pythons have teeth!)...Airborne (my Corn Snake), to my knowledge, only bit a couple of people...normally just mouthed (except for someone who LIED that they had washed their hands...when he had ate chicken nuggets right beforehand...and Airborne liked what he smelled)...only drew blood from his bites twice...and no stitches EVER! THAT is a pet! Safe, beneficial...and fun! (not to mention, affordable...crickets are cheap to feed along with a pet mouse 'maternity ward') (Henrietta was 'zoo/display quality'...but I never really felt comfortable around her...often teasing my wife 'so...when are we taking your now-grown Anaconda to the zoo for repatriation?').

I didn't realize how effective the flicker coloring is until I saw these guys in person. The striping also helps break up their silhouette in a way I didn't expect - you'd think a red snake would be easy to spot, but I often find myself squinting at any pale strip (a lighter piece of mulch, a fresh urate) from across my room wondering if the snake is poking his head out of the substrate. I've absolutely fallen in love with my black milk.

Clint, ive recently changed my set up for my pueblan milk snake. I laid a foot and a half of coco fiber/ground walnut and mixed with water in my 75gal. Basking spot with 75w uvb bulb. Buried ceramic hides at the bottom. My male LOVES this. He has an intricate system of burrows, basks, etc. I think we should update care guides

Those little milk snakes are very strong for their size. One of my tattoo clients gave me their try color milk snake because they were afraid of him haha. I took him out to show them there is nothing to fear and I was really surprised at how strong he was for his size. Its not like a constrictor but I can see how they have the power to just gulp down their prey without constricting it first. I now have 2 rooms full of ball pythons and 1 lone little milk snake. They are actually pretty cool to handle once they settle down.
