Actually Japanese audiences don't like full translations. If there is no English it feels off. So often game companies will translate the games script and most of the marketing but will almost always leave parts in English

Even Japanese games will have some English if the game is set in an English speaking country. For example the Biohazard games used to only have English VA.

What's strange however is the Japanese version, purely as a result of English class, is now the go to version for 100% speed runs.

@@betuna9487 They lowered the pass rate percentage to like 20%, so you only needed to write like 3 or 4 words. It's because the minigame is still in its original English form, and Japanese players would be a lot less familiar with it.

Fun fact: bully on PS2 was legally banned in Brazil and as a result...it sold and sells well pirated copies even to this day since there was no original copies of ps2 games here. The same happened with GTA san andreas.

it wasn't banned in Argentina but we also mostly got copies because they were cheaper 😂 not just Bully but any game, normally you'd go buy it with a friend so that parents weren't involved

Another fun fact regarding sanandreas is that many of the brazil pirated versions came with special mod menus and trainers. Oh how I woulda loved ps2 sanandreas with the super cj mod. I remember watching those youtube videos back in 2009-2011 and being mind blown as a kid that people were doing these things on a ps2 game. I was a young kid, too young to where I shouldnt have been playing it and I didnt know anything about "mods" or the limitless power of the pc platform because i grew up poor and only had ps2 till about 2014. KZbin was only available when my parents more wealthy friend came over with their ipod touch. Im still curious to how the hell they added that stuff to a ps2 iso.

Russian language was used only in CIS versions of Bully, only on PC (but later fans modded it on console versions) and only in physical copies. However, you can activate russian language in Steam version by changing a couple of lines in config file. And it would work as it should. Don't know about japanese though.

I used to know Japanese to an intermediate level (studied it for 6 years) but I never thought about turning on the Japanese subtitles before. Maybe I’ll give it a go for my play through this year and see if there’s any interesting translation differences. I tried out the Korean subtitles for GTA San Andreas earlier this year and thought it was disappointing. It’s just a straight translation and none of the slang translated over. There wasn’t even an attempt to use similar Korean slang. The wit of the original was totally left out, so I’m curious if that’s the case for Bully’s Japanese subtitles.
