I had an Akita in the 80's and that dog was awesome. She was from a well known breeder in upstate New York State. She was a great dog and was a phenomenal protector.just like Susan mentioned in the video. These are highly intelligent dogs that don't want to retrieve a stick 10 times in a row BUT they know when you need protecting and will do so without needing you to tell them a verbal signal or command. At 12 weeks old a 10 month old dog from a medium size breed of dog tried to act dominantly over her, she basically kicked the crap out of him without me saying a word. You will hear the word "aloof" when people describe Akitas a lot. That is the best way to describe them when they are not your dog. If you think about it, a guard dog should be aloof with strangers. They are generally a one person dog but will always interact and protect the family. They really don't need any additional protection training. I think if they received additional protection training, you might have to keep an eye on them closely at all times. They fear NOTHING but don't go out looking for trouble. The only reason I didn't stick with the Akita was because I am not a fan of the shedding or "blowouts" as some people call it. My wife can't stand it, lol. If not for that I would have had Akita's right up to this day. I am a Doberman guy and have been my entire life. Do your research and learn as much as you can about the Akita. They are a fabulous breed but you have to realize that you must be a responsible owner if you are going to have an Akita and they shouldn't be left alone a lot. They are very independent but need you to be around them and socialize with them. The return is well worth it, you will never regret it. Good luck and God bless.

My friend had two Akitas and man when those things blew their coats his backyard looked like Christmas in winter. Huge balls of drifting white hair. One swipe of the comb brought up a small bucket of hair. These dogs are the best looking dogs, just awesome.

Fuji was 118 pounds and very agile...aloof and non confrontational...but at the same time VERY protective! I once had a friend over that had been over our place dozens of times and knew Fuji well...I left to go to the store when he was over one time and got a call 5 minutes after I left to come home immediately...Fuji had backed Craig into a corner! I didn't quite understand why until I really thought about it...Craig had never been in our home when I wasn't there...genius!! Smartest guard dog out there bar none...and by the way he never bit, he just intimidated!

Beautiful interview! My family bought an Akita from her back in '04, when the dog was 6mos. and a giant puppy. She was the one I got to leash train and grow up with, and she really did like to jump (we had to put a lattice over the fence to keep her in), and damn, she could run. The dog in the agility section of the video, with the grey/black coat over white legs and belly looks like her, and how she'd move. We finally lost her last year from old age, but she was a wonderful dog, and everything Susan said about the breed is so true.

Great video! She brings up a few very important points about any and all guard dogs that most people should know and utilize with their dogs... Akitas are a one of a kind breed if you ask me!! Their intelligence, loyalty, and lack of hesitation to act is almost impossible to match!! They are one of the only breeds that doesn't require training to attack!! Most guard dogs have to be trained to attack, as well as build confidence in order to create a fearless dog, but not with the Akitas!! My favorite dogs hands down, next to German Shepherd dog!

Hey I would love some of your experience- husband and I have a 2 year old German shepherd , very well trained very protective but even tempered. Recently researching on a male Akita to add to our home. I’m your experience how do the breeds compare? Bad idea or naw? My shepherd is very good with all dogs and very good with puppies. He is def the alpha though when push comes to shove with other dogs and he will dominate if need be.

I've heard there are key differences between American Akitas and Akita Inus, and although you touched on this in one of your other videos, it would be awesome to see the specifics of living with the Japanese breed version. I have a brindle female and her stud is very dashing off white and brown patches with face mask and white nose stripe. She says her male is part japanese. I dont know how thats going to effect the price of our litter. But "butch" is a handsome stud with great traits.

Yes. Wet her dark colored fur with cool water. White reflects heat and dark absorbs. Also get her a fan for in the house. I have two mini fans in my car for my female akita "bathsheba".

@@twinnedcave its not a nightmare for me, because i vacuum everyday and lint roll my clothes and furniture. I keep a clean body and house. Akitas are fastidious dogs. The males constantly preen themselves. The females a little less than males.

Thank You Susan for a great video. My Akita, Khan, died from cancer in 2005. I haven't yet brought my self to get another...yet. He had an incredible temperament. He was with my wife at work, she managed a no kill shelter, and a man raised his voice and got in her face while Khan was close by. Khan slammed the guy to the floor and just stood over him and showed no aggression. The man slowly got up and quietly left. I was so proud. We worked hard to socialize him with people and other animals. We were always fostering or nursing other dogs and cats at home so that also helped. My sons are saying that it's time for me to get another Akita. Perhaps this next one will be a service and/or therapy dog. Thank you again !

I have two Akita’s. After a few weeks of watching they worked out a system to open the gate. One would lift up the latch and the other would push the gate open. They would go for their fun runs and come back inside and manage to leave the gate so it would just look like it was closed

I have owned two Akitas in my lifetime, one was an excellent dog was potty trained loved people and was the ideal perfect dog. The second one went to the bathroom everywhere, and was aggressive and bit many people who came to my house, I want to get a third but don’t know if a should based off my last experience. PappaPlayz dogs from the same breed are not all going to behave the same. They all have shared tendencies/behaviors but training one might prove to be easier/harder than the other. Just depends on their personality which means you’ll have to adjust their training based on that.

Japanese breeds are chillax dogs that are the epitome of FAFO…. and they’re so chilled because they aren’t afraid of anything, my Shiba Inu went after a Newfie that looked to be around 180 pounds (I had her on leash and didn’t allow her to get too close, but she was trying), and one time she charged and took down a Giant Schnauzer that was bothering my roomie’s toy poodle. Japanese dogs fear NOTHING.

I live alone and have always wanted to go for walks, especially in the evenings, but feel it’s risky considering where I live (I live in a large city). I’ve also wanted an American Akita all my life. I’ve done a lot of research about this breed. I would like to think an Akita would protect me if we’re out walking and a bad stranger or aggressive animal tried to attack me.

This is one dog breed the Americans have improved on the traditional Japanese akita my opinion. The other breed improved is the American Staffordshire bull terrier over British staffies. Other breeds they normally spoiled them for example rottweiler, German breed is much better. American rottweiler is taller n leaner and head is spoilt.

You're correct. Fetch is more for retrievers... cause they retrieve. A lot of hunting dogs will also bring back fowl and game. But for guard dogs, it makes no sense why they would be bred to have the fetch personality trait. If they ran after everything that got their attention, they'd be a shitty guard dog. Still has no impact on intelligence, or vice versa.

She does alot of things on her own terms though, that's why they are considered so smart, they don't strictly do things to make their owners happy like most dog breeds. Independent because to a large degree they can reason, that is smart.

This is so true. I personally have always spun this argument the other way to the morons who see this as some sort of genius qualifier. "Your dog doesn't play fetch because your either too stupid to train it or its not motivated enough to figure out what you want from it." You should see the way conversation shuts down after that. I've worked with tons of shelter dogs and a preference to play fetch can be a quick indicator of a dogs personality type, but is by no means an intelligence quotient. Most any dog can pick up on fetch, even if they don't enjoy it much.

if you train him/her early and well there shouldn't be any problem with the kids. My akita is very protect of all the kids of the family even when family bring their kids over. My akita well stay outside and make sure no one messes with the children while they play in the front yard

They are good dogs, I own an American akita. Don't let their size fool you, my girl is strong. And they are very protective, and cat like, my girl keeps clean like a cat. Best dog ever, other than poodles...but they shed alot 2 times a year.

Golden what? Retriever? They are more like 70-80lbs border yea very light very swift retriever abit more of a barreling bull tho. Maybe mine is just hefty boi. Great video. Currently looking at getting a new dog. Plan on living on my own just me and person zoo. Have a dedicated other critter room so no worry about dog eating anyone. Atm its toss up between boerboel, akita or doberman. Sofar Boer and dob are in lead with Boer leading due to least health issues associated with. I absolutely adore Akitas for their look but I also know better then to pick the prettiest one. I've had rotts and Pitts been around boxers and Bulldogs. Best friend has a bullmastiff I've been around since day one I'm not worried about dealing with a "dominant/aggressive guard" breed. I'm not the most imposing dude so having a larger dog with a "try me" face would add a level of comfort and confidence even in the less savory parts of town. I really dont mind being followed to bathroom or stepping on getting up from couch/bed. Actually prefer it, I know that they are there and ready. It's a beautiful thing but not everyone's cup of tea. I like camping and hiking tho so would very much need something capable of going all day most mastiff breeds just cant keep up with that. Finding a suitable guardian that can hike all day in mountain has made the search trying at times. Overall my mind isnt made up and akitas still very much in running. Guess search continues and dog video watching aswell.
