Great pyrenees wolf mix was my first dog. He kept the stray dogs away and they followed him to hunt deer with the neighbors dogs.

There were fires in California in the fall of 2017, in the north and the south. There was a family who had to evacuate. They could not take their sheep (they had 3 or 4 sheep), but they were trying to get their Great Pyrenees dog to come with them. He refused to come, choosing to stay with the sheep, instead. They returned home to find their place had burned down, but a joyful scene came around the corner to greet them. It was their dog and ALL of the sheep. The dog had led the sheep into safe areas during the fire, saving the sheep and himself. (I thought, that you would like to hear this story, if you had not already heard it.)

The Pyrenees were bred White to blend in with the Sheep. So if there were wolves stalking the herd when they heard the dog bark they would not know how many dogs they were up against because they were all looking the same although they have different scents. Pyrenees also bark in one place then run to another place and bark so it sounds like one dog is multiple dogs.

You are over thinking things. Great Pyrenees historically intermingle with livestock not to confuse predators, but to create a bond with the livestock. Resembling the sheep, their presence is accepted a bit easier by the sheep. What strategy would work better to deter predators, letting the predators know that big, formidable LGDs are present, capable of injuring the wolves or coyotes, or the dogs confusing the wolves so that the wolves are not certain if the dogs are LGDs or prey. If a wolf attacks not knowing whether an animal is a sheep of LGD, the sheep, dogs, and wolves can be injured or killed, but if the wolves know LGD's are present and are up to the task of defending against the predator(s), the predators will not risk an attack. I have owned Great Pyrenees, Kangal, and now Central Asian Ovtcharka. I personally prefer the COA and superior working quality Kangal dogs (too many inferior quality specimen and so called Anatolia Shepherds, which DNA studies have proven are just mongrelized Kangal are found in the USA), as they roam off property much less than Great Pyrenees. Great Pyrenees display an active defense drive or are animal aggressive on property, but they are not great property guard dogs against human intrusion. The COA, Kangal, Rottie, Cane Corso would be more effective as property protectors against strange humans. However, COA dogs do not well tolerate any human male or larger adult female that they are not familiar with entering their property, whereas, the Great Pyrenees possess a much greater tolerance for strange humans on property. So having relatives or guests visits can be a challenge with COA and Caucasian Ovtcharka dogs present. The Kangal and COA are considerably larger than the Great Pyrenees, are as athletic or in many instances are more athletic than the Great Pyrenees, tolerate extremes of temperatures better than the Great Pyrenees, possess canines a minimum twice as large as a Great Pyrenees, which makes them more effective deterrents against wolves and other medium to larger predators. My 194 pound male COA 60-70 pounds heavier than a large Great Pyrenees male) killed 5 coyote-wolf hybrids in short order, caught and killed a bobcat (very sad about that), took down multiple buck deer on property, my 162 pound female COA tore a coyote-wolf hybrid in half, one of my large Great Pyrenees males (one of the larger specimen that we encountered in the USA) killed two Coyote-Wolf Hybrids, while two of my neighbors attack trained Doberman were torn to pieces by coyotes. I reside on a mountain and my Great Pyrenees would spend hours a day on state park property, perched on high-ground guarding for as far as the eye can see and legs can travel. So they will guard your farm, your neighbors farm, and your neighbors-neighbors farm, but what good is that when you want them on your property. Build a fence and many working line Great Pyrenees dogs will find the weak-link and exploit it, and within a few days undermine the fence. With my COA dogs, I can leave a gate open and they do not venture out, and none has ever attempted to dig under or undermine the fenced (7.5 foot Height) enclosure.

It's true for sure, however, if someone tries to break into your house at night, that couch dog will turn into a legitimate threat to the intruder in one second flat.

Best dog that I ever had. My Pyr saved me from an attack from a Rottweiler. I was surprised when he sprang into action. He could actually look docile one second and fierce when he needed to be. I miss him every day. They don't live very long but are the sweetest dogs.

Mine was also the best dog I ever had. He was a rescue, very neglected & starving, so was content to stay in the house close to someone that loved & appreciated him. However when he was brave enough to venture outside he also was an escape artist. He's been gone many years now & I also miss him daily. Would love another one, but live in AZ & know heat here would be too much to get another one. Thank you for spotlighting these wonderful dogs.

While walking the neighborhood, another couple asked if their dog (German Shepherd) could meet mine. I said it wasn't a good idea since he's very protective of me, but they let their dog approach anyway. Mine immediately jumped and knocked him down, ready to go for the throat. I pulled him off before anything could happen and apologized, but it was really their fault. They kept their dog well away after that.

Our neighbor has one and we love him. He spends a lot of time on our property patrolling our 5 acres along with other neighbor properties. My husband has cancer and the dog seems to sense something is not right so he spends a lot of time patrolling the front acreage and checking out everyone who comes. Our gentle giant will come in, sniff my hubby’s hand as if to encourage him. What an amazing animal! We have a lot of wildlife including coyotes and he barks a lot at night. We feel very safe, and when my husband’s time is passed, I would love to have one in his memory.

Wei-Shin Song:My Son's family has a Pyrenees Golden mix named Saffy because of her red/gold color. She weighs about 125# and is protective of their 16 acre property in the woods but sweet to her humans. They have some predictor issues but Saffy does a good job of keeping the chickens and children safe.

I have an Australian Sheperd/Great Pyrenees mix- very handsome, about 80% Pyr in appearance and demeanor, has the golden/white coloration of the Aussie. He could easily be taken for a golden, but for the markings.

I had a Great Pyrenes when I was younger named Bear and my dad went outside one night to find him fighting off a small group of Coyotes, nearly killing all of them with no injuries at all. He was also the sweetest dog I have ever owned. Extremely gentle with me and all my siblings. One of the best dog breeds by far.

We Love our Great Pyrenees...Rayne. We are on a farm and she loves being outside as much as possible. As per your comments about Pyranees not being eager to please.. Rayne is very eager to please. She comes when called, sits, lays down etc. She is so great with people as you said. She is especially great with our younger children..so patient and loving. When someone she hasn't been introduced to comes into the property she sure let's us and that person about it. She barks to Allert us and lets them know she is here. Once we introduce her to a new person she never barks at them again. She is a very quiet dog.... So when she does bark it's worth a look to see what is up. Rayne is my 3rd Pyranees. Previously I had another female, "Emma" & a Male, "Ready". Ready saved my life 2 times.. The first time was when I was walking him at night and a guy came at me from an Alley.. he looked like he had been in a fight. He came at me with a knife in his hand. Ready crossed infront of me and changed completely. He became aggressive..barking, his back fur stood up making him look bigger than his 135lb frame! He stayed between the man and me. As the man approached me Ready put his front paws on them and shoulders, barking right in his face. The guy dropped the knife, turned and ran back down the Alley.. Ready pursued him to the Alley, stopped and continued to bark and look very intimidating. Once he felt things were safe he turned and walked back to me calm as can be. I was so amazed how he went from calm peaceful dog to "Cujo" instantly when the danger/threat appeared! Another time I fell through ice and he pulled me out. I was skating on a frozen marina in the Hamilton, Ontario Bay. Ready was laying in the snow beside the dock where I took my boots of and put my skates on. As I skated toward the dock to change back to my boots and go home for supper I went through the ice. When I surfaced I didn't have the strength to climb out. The water had come up and the ice was so slippery. I kept falling back into the water. I stayed there for a few minutes with my Coat arms on-top of the ice so they would freeze to the ice. My Coat was undone because I had got warm skating. I called Ready over and took his leash.. I threw a piece of ice the was floating beside me and told him to fetch. As he took off after the ice I managed to slip my arms out of my Coat and was pulled out of the water. I rolled to a safe distance from the hole. Ready came to me, sniffing me, then later on-top of me. He would not let me up. After about 25 minutes I stopped shivering. We layed there for another 10 minutes. He decided when it was time for us to go... He stood up and looked at me with a look like "Ok..time to get home". I will never forget Ready..he holds a special place in my heart and I will always love him. We lost Ready back in May of 1987. I miss him every day.

I live on 40-acres bordered on three sides by cattle ranches. Our 13-yr. old Great Pyrenees Queenie is the best dog we've ever owned. She still patrols every night keeping the coyotes and feral hogs off of our property. When we had cattle she spent most of her time hanging out with them. She adores kids and even let the littlest ones climb all over her. She is still very stubborn but that's a breed trait, and I love it. One way a Pyrenees will show their love for a human is to lift their paw and lay it on your lap. I know she doesn't have much time left with us, being 13-years old, and we're making her very comfortable with arthritis meds and good nutritional food. I would recommend anyone with acreage to get a Great Pyrenees. Wonderful, amazing breed.

Your Great Pyrenees in the vid carries himself like he is very very intelligent. He's all laid back and casual strolling around his grounds like a Boss! When my kids were growing up, we had a German Shepard named Max and he smart too. I could tell him to go check on the kids and he would. I showed him, go on Patrol and he would go outside and walk the fence line of our yard front and back. Dogs are a wonderful gift from God to us. :)

We have many thousands of acres. The Pyrenees are who stay in close - within a mile - and the Akbash Anatolian were far reaching to the edges of the property and the komondor dog's were a mid range dog. Part of my job was driving around the ranch feeding them all. Could take 4 or 5 hours. A scoop of food then drive and give another scoop. I never knew where they would be. I would drive to an area or slowly and they would come to the top of the hill. Sometimes i couldnt find one of them until i would look in the rear view mirror and one would be following me for his scoop of food. During the fall gather when all dogs came together after not seeing each other all summer it could get interesting while they sorted out who was going to be the boss of which barn for the winter! We could handle most of the dogs but a couple just were not going to hear of it so they were never groomed or wormed. They did just as well, lived just as long (14 yrs) as the ones that had good yearly care! Never understood that! Except we fed a high quality food. Yet, the dogs would trot along snacking on mice so ??? I loved them all. The sheep were sold. Us sheep herders got old. The dogs went with the sheep. It was the right thing to do. But, I miss them daily.

I am thankfully a healthy 70 year old, 71 this coming December, I am from South West Wales, but currently living in Southern Sweden still looking for that place to settle lol maybe the North of Sweden next, Or Catalunya ??? I have 14 dogs in tow :-) 4 Pyrenean Mountain Dogs, 7 Cŵn Defaid Cymreig (Welsh Sheepdogs) and 3 Bugeilgwn Mawr Cymreig (Big Welsh Shepherd dogs) essentially a mix Welsh Sheepdog / Pyrenean. A similar Mastiff Guardian / Herder type dog once existed in Wales, but the original working breed is long thought to be extinct.

Our Great Pyrenees lives in the suburbs, likes being in the air conditioning, is probably the smartest dog we've ever had, and loves attention. She guards when she's outside, likes being muddy or wet, and is happy not to play much with the other dogs we live with. She prefers humans. And...she talks to us, in her own way, to communicate just what she wants us to do. I suspect she'd like to be the alpha around here but I just can't deal with that. She's super gentle and polite and accommodating, all without any formal training. Great breed!

I know a former breeder of Great Pyrenees. These dogs are so docile. WARNING: these dogs can sometimes be gigantic lap dogs when they want to be more around people.

Ashley Bowen Ours is half and half. When she is outside, she's on duty and diligently guards the chickens and geese. When she's inside? She is a loving want to be lap dog that won't fit on anyone's lap. But when she's had her fill of attention she wants back outside with the birds or she wanders off to take a nap like a giant cat.

Yes! We had one adopt us a couple weeks ago. Someone dumped him off on the side of the road! He doesn't have the best house manners and we would rather him stay outside and gaurd our livestock but he wants to be inside ALL the time!

I live in die Pyrenees and our neighbour has one. Everytime he sees me, he jumps up on me, puts his enormous paws on my shoulders and hell, he's heavy. But so sweet. He takes care of the sheep that graze around and on our property and beware, the people that dare approach the sheep. We've got bears here and they are very effectivly garding the sheep against t he bears.

Great video! I had an Alpaca Ranch in Los Olivos CA and that's when we got our 1st Great Pyrenees who was amazing! Since then I've had 3 more but moved to TN after my husband's sudden death and brought with me only 20 of our 60 alpacas. Now I have no livestock because of getting Parkinson's. After the death in Nov of my last Pray, I just got a Great Pyrenees Shepherd Mix puppy just to be a friend and help guard the ranch

We have an old retired pyr and he is the sweetest most stubborn dog I have ever had and also one of my favorites. He definitely has a mind of his own but he is SUCH a good dog and well behaved. He just doesn’t like puppies haha which is fine because he’s all that we need! He also loves his attention and alllll the cuddles 😂

She speaks in such a matter-of-fact way about Teddy and what he does, but she frequently allows us to see her pride and delight in this wonderful dog. Our Great Pyrenees is a year and a half now. We have 2 acres fenced w/i our 5 acres but no livestock here in the Nevada desert. He most definitely is keen to chase a chipmunk off the property, though. He's quite proud of that fact. He is also quite attentive to our desert tortoise and lets us know when he comes out of his burrow, often checking on him through the window inside. He let us know once when Tippy had tipped over. He had an aggressive phase at 1 yr old to his older Labrador brother but he's mellowed now. Since he's raised as an indoor pet, it seems that he sleeps well at night. We are quite isolated but there are coyotes out there but they never venture close. He did scare us once when he slipped out of the gate w/o my notice. He was a mile away in the desert wilderness when we spotted him. He seemed so relieved to hear our voices and quickly came back to us. I've finished secure fencing now so we are less worried about him wandering off again. Shedding is a big deal so brushing is crucial. He is quite vocal, as well, as the breed can be. It is usually cute but sometimes can be annoying. But that's ok. We sure love Do-gee, our big white bear. Also, he drools far more that both the St. Bernard and English Mastiff that we had the honor to love and care for. I still miss my Caleb and my EZ, having raised them from puppy to death.

I got a lab mix puppy from pound, had a feeling they were wrong because of big feet, tail and ears, so did DNA Test, proud of my Great Pyrenees Pitt mix, he looks like a shaved Great Pyrenees, 100lbs and 100% full of protection and love. Minute husband out of bed he puts himself in his spot, never wake alone. Great Pyrenees great loyal breed.

We have 5 Great Pyrenees on our ranch in Texas. We love the breed. Excellent with calves, cattle and horses. And also extremely good with our grand children.

Teddy is simply beautiful! Great Pyrnees is the most noble breed to me. I totally love these dogs. I have 4 at this time, 2 lovely females and 2 gorgeous males. I had 2 others that are now at Rainbow Bridge, yet still guarding me. Layla, my oldest female is 4 yrs old, and she was not bred for livestock guarding, her breeder does breed show dogs, and she was a gift given to me when I lost my first female. Molly is 3 yrs old, my youngest female, and she came from a breeder here in Florida, that breeds Livestock Guardian Dogs. She is my smallest Pyr, she will remain always smaller but fearless. Bailey is my oldest male, he is 2 yrs old (just turned 2) he is beautiful and quite large, he was a gift from my wonderful Florida breeder, when I lost my first male at 13 yrs old to cancer. Cooper is my youngest male, he is 1 yrs old, he is growing into a very beautiful boy, he too was a gift from my Florida breeder. The two boys are Livestock Guardians like ms Molly. I do live in the suburbs of Jacksonville Florida, in a home with a backyard. I will be moving to the country soon, and then these dogs will have the freedom they truly deserve. These are by far the most intelligent dogs, and many people are not aware of this, because they see only their beauty and their size. So many of these dogs, after purchasing or adopting them, end up abandoned because people are afraid they will get too big, cost far too much and just end up being dumped along some old road. I try so very hard to help educate people about our Pyrs because, people buy on impulse, when they need to understand the true nature of this breed. This is a remarkable breed, loving and faithful and they certainly do love their people. I love how you have so much room, if only all Pyrs could have this too, but unfortunately they don't. Your content is of incredible quality! I'm a student right now, and I'm already planning to get one or two large dogs as soon as I have a big enough home in the countryside somewhere, and a stable job. I would really love to have at least one working dog, with a purpose, that knows it is loved. I've been binge-watching your videos for information and even taking notes! I grew up with animals, but I know I have to have more experience before I go buying a large breed that will need lots of care, socialisation, training and guidance (among other things!) The editing is wonderful, and not in-your-face. The quality of information is always high, thank you so much for these videos and your hard work. That's all I can think of to say for now. Well done!

This was a fantastic depiction of this breed. Within 5 minutes I understood that they need to be in the great outdoors. Needed to herd, mostly nocturnal and protect the livestock at all costs. My grandma owns a Great Prynees (one died of bone cancer in 2019, at the age of 2 in his left paw). It tried herding my grandmas horse once, but the horse tripped over a 30 lb lump of granite, and had to have her leg wrapped.

That sounds like a heavy predator load. Teddy should have a couple of back-up guardians. Many people find that a couple of different breeds, with diverging guarding styles, works best.

They don't have what I would consider a "heavy" predator load but I totally agree, these dogs are not supposed to be run solo - anywhere, ever. That is an American folly. In their countries of origin they are run in pairs or more. In Spain, often up to 15 dogs trail with sheep. Teddy will burn out sooner because he's carrying the whole load. But this is not a normal set up that she has for an LGD, either. Letting people on the farm day in and day out with strange dogs - on most ranches that is not the norm, at all. This is a boutique set up more than a working ranch. People bring their herding dogs there to train. Teddy kind of gets lost in the shuffle, IMHO. :\

@@mrvk39 If you think that a mountain lion would attack a Great Pyr then you're an ignorant degenerate. These dogs can run both solo and in groups and that usually depends on the amount of animals and the size of the territory rather than anything else. Wild animals 'respect' the territory marked by a great pyr and will not risk their lives or injury by trying to attack one. Even bears and mountain lions tend to stay away. In the wild it's not about winning a fight, because a bear could certainly kill a grear pyr dog, it's about avoiding unnecessary injuries that could lead to eventual death due to subsequent bleeding, overall weakness after a fight or possible infection of wounds.

I'm a 1st time owner of a Pyr. So far he is a fantastic dog. 6 months old and he's completely trustworthy, independent and great temperament. He is our new farm guard and is doing excellent in his training for it. I'm so impressed by this breed.

We live in an area where everyone has a few acres. My back neighbor has had a great Pyrenees for a couple of years now and I always enjoyed interacting with him and loved his calm, serene nature. While waiting to have their house built, my neighbors sister and husband were staying on their property in a fifth wheel and they have a female german shepard who also has a friendly, outgoing nature. You guessed it, they got tangled up and puppies arrived. My neighbor knew how much I enjoyed their GP and asked if we wanted any of the pups. We picked up two of them and have had them for almost two months now. Been loving on them and harness training them. Wonderful, gentle, sweet pups. Cant wait to take them hiking with us when they get bigger!

My 6 yr old border collie is the one training the 8 month old Great Pyrenees. Once the GP grew larger than the Border collie, he decided that he needed to start training her to fight and wrestle and guard just like my original GP had taught him. I am looking for an older GP to teach the 8 month old better manners around the goats for when there are kids.

They are not supposed to be fat Jason, , if you cannot see a waist line then they are over weight, A farmer in the French Pyrenees once said to me, "fat dogs cannot clime mountains, if a Pyrenean cannot work in the mountains he's no good to me !" If anyone should know, it's a farmer who farms in the Pyrenean Mountains :-)

My wife and I adopted a male pyr just over 2 years ago. His name is Ben (short for Benjamin after one of the 12 tribes). He was a breeder in a backyard kennel in Louisiana. And...he was abused. He's (now) very sweet and loving in his own way and protective. I walk him for miles at a time which he seems to really love doing and he urine marks everything! Great video!! Thanks!!

I grew up with Great Pyrenees. The first was a rescue named Nick that was abused before we got him 😥. He turned out to be a wonderful dog. A year or so after he passed away, we adopted Audrey from a farm. She was absolutely the best dog and she lived for around 13 years. My mom just got a new one a few months ago and it is the first puppy she's had. Hopefully she'll end up being as awesome as the others were. I'm trying to talk my husband into letting me get one.

I've had 3 Great Pyrenees over the years: 2 males, 1 female. Awesome dogs, great with my kids from birth and profoundly dedicated... very protective of my children as a couple folks found out; we didn't live in a great area. Lived in the city, later on a farm, the female was with us when we moved, she transitioned well, and immediately took to protecting our birds... although she loved harassing the horses, which she was obviously doing for fun; she was brutal to the coyotes. Our first male was the runt of a litter, still 98 pounds, thought he was a lap dog, lived to be 12; many people have stories about him. Someone poised our second male, he died at 4; I was in college at the time and never really bonded with him... too busy, feel pretty bad about that. We rescued our female when she was 2, while on the farm someone intentionally ran her down when she was 6, most likely the poachers who she repeatedly alerted us about... I say that with confidence because of a statement I made to locals as to what was going to happen to anyone I found on my property from that point forward, and all trespassing ceased.

I have a half great Pyrenees and half border collie 14 month puppy and she is so smart (she understands all her commands in two languages - including basic sentences- without hand signals)! She is very independent and can think for herself but she is also very loving and protective. She is a natural at puppy play - even when the other puppies are 1/10th of her size. She was raised with goats (both parents were livestock dogs - on different farms) and she lives in the city. We give her a lot of exercise (physical and mental) but the combination of these two breeds creates balance in terms of personality. Great explanation of the breed and so describes my Great Pyrenees also, almost identical. Dawn & dusk are the property line check and up all night, sleep most of day, unless they sense/smell or see something. I also have an Akbash (12 yrs old now) and my Pyrenees has taken to covering him for protection...as well as the chickens, cats, anything I introduce to him as "family". He tolerates my BC's working the sheep just fine. I love this breed's personality & temperament, so gentle but get the job done. Last summer he had a bear treed in the pasture, saw him run a mt. lion over the fence...very brave dogs, yet gentle. My favorite breed for livestock guard dog, for my situation anyway. Thanks for the video, great job.
