This video has almost converted me to Zen Buddhism, I have learned the art of patience to watch a man take 15 minutes to remove a single split pin and castellated nut from a prop shaft. 😎

Glad to see you back on the repairs Terry , you really need to scrape all that old anti foul off to hunt out all the blisters , also you need to wash the cavities out , I know this might seem counter intuitive, but as the blister juice slowly leaches out it dries and seals the cavities and stops the drying process, the blister juice is water soluble so try pressure washing the hull maybe once or twice a week , the cavities might look dry but there not , the pressure washing will give you the cavity the best chance of drying and gives the epoxy filling the best chance of success , if your not planning on going back in the water till next year I would strip the antifoul right now and excavate all the blisters and regularly wash the hull over the winter and do the filling /laminating in the spring when it’s over 10 deg celsius , then barrier coat the hull with hempel high protect 2 , im doing the identical job on my boat as we speak , if you want a chat about it send me a message glad to help if I can Nick

DANG! Watching you work that cotter pin was down right painful! Here’s a tip, cut off as much of the open end as you can. Then cut the loop end in half. Grab one of the loop ends with your Vice grips. Then knock out that one bit, the next will practically fall out. If not, we’ll then you need a bigger hammer😎

Very nice jazz music in the background. See, you are learning about boat repair. Just ask people how to do things and then do it like you are doing. I am proud of you. It might be time for another nut for that prop. Still love that boat.

Ah, split pins are a pain. I remember similar issues in trying to remove these from castellated nuts when restoring my Series 2 Land Rover. I have seen some remove them with a pair of pliers angling the plier against the nut to ease out the pin. Never as easy as they make this look. Good work, all the best with your restoration of Demetrius. Thanks for sharing.

See you at the boat show, should be there 2nd Saturday. Prop shafts are a pain. Once used a beer can to increase the diameter of a shaft so the coupling could grip onto it. This was after it fell out and sank to the bottom. Always carry a selection of wooden cones! Had a nice swim to retrieve it and while I was down there found some expensive sun glasses.
@trhosking23 күн бұрын
Thread a couple of metres of strong wire through the loop on the split pin. Twist the loose ends securely together to form a loop. Use a sledge hammer or similar heavy weight to yank the pin using the loop. Beware of recoil.

Using a dremel to deal with the biggest osmosis blisters is perfectly fine. Don’t forget to wipe the area down first with acetone before applying thickened epoxy to repair those areas. What you really need to do though is to sand off all the old antifoul using a vac sander, and remember to suit and mask up to avoid breathing in the dust. You will then need to paint the hull with primer before applying a couple of coats of antifoul. This is the only way you can be sure your have dealt with the state of your hull.

Hey! Nobody is looking at 'how you look like!' In other peoples eyes you are totally just another human being. Everyone sees themselves through a different window to how others do. Just do your films. I reckon lots of people wish they could put themselves on camera. (If they realise that they are not scrutinised, they would!)
