Today we're tackling the steering rack which finishes off all the front suspension geometry... WHEW! It's been quite the ride but we made it through!
The main issue we're dealing with here is preventing "bump-steer" which is when the tires turn left or right when you hit a bump or pothole. It's not good... but luckily there are ways to avoid it! Ackerman geometry can also be affected by the location of the steering rack, but it is more a factor of the location of the steering arms on the knuckles (which we talked about in Episode 16) so we're good to go there.
You may think the factory GT6 rack should just plop back into place, seeing as it is what the car had from factory, right? Well... yes, the car's track width is about the same as before (a little wider) but the Crown Victoria suspension components are quite a bit longer than what we had before, meaning to keep everything working correctly, the steering rack needs to be shorter before!
Weird, isn't it.
We could look for an aftermarket rack, or a factory rack that's smaller, but to be honest, both of those options are pretty much non-existent due to the minuscule size of this car. While a center take-off rack or one with a travel bar were decent options, what we decided to do worked out perfectly and hardly cost a cent!
Check out the video to learn more :)
Where did we learn all this? The internet is an amazing place!
If you're new, our 1971 Triumph GT6 is receiving a transplanted 5.3l LS4 V8 and Mustang T5 gearbox... among others things... like a Corvette Dana 36 differential... and a bellhousing from a Jeep. So. It's not exactly your typical Triumph.
Next time we'll be figuring out a solution for an anti-sway bar (it's another "how hard can it be" situation...) so SUBSCRIBE so you don't miss anything!

Thank you for the excellent graphics that explain bump steer and steering geometry. I always had trouble visualizing how this worked. I can imagine how much time it took to make the graphics! On another note, I had a 1973 GT6 and sometimes wondered what it would be like to try and shovel a V8 under the hood. I had no idea that it would be so involved - glad I left everything stock! I've been enjoying the build very much and now I"m living vicariously through you two. I now live on a 40' sailboat in the Florida Keys. I'm quite content, but miss that fun little car. Thanks again for your excellent videos!

You're very welcome! I'm glad the animations could help, that means I'm doing my job! 😄 To be honest, the build could have been done on a much smaller scale if we used a less powerful engine like a Rover V8... But what would the fun be in that! Enjoy the Florida Keys, send us some warmth it was -21C this morning!! 😄 Hope you'll enjoy what's to come, stay in touch!

Loved your practical approach both to finding the "great compromise" and your explanation! Loved Nik's prattle for Binky's steering, but one eye has been a little fuzzy since he blazed away with that laser beam! Very Glad to see both you and your dad "up and running". A note- I subbed some long time ago, but I'm not getting notified through my subs list, but you did pop on my feed. We need to help you find another couple hundred subs- you really do the work and make it very entertaining! Say Hi, Dad! FR

Thank you Frederic! Always appreciate hearing from you! Haha, yeah, no "freaking lasers" here but another fairly effective solution to the same problem! Thanks for the heads up about not being notified... I've not had anyone mention that to me before, but I'm aware it's an issue on KZbin.... Hmm... Maybe I'll do a poll sometime to see if that can reach people. 👍 I will pass along your regards 😄 cheers my friend!

@@FanatikBuilds You and your dad earn it every time- I've not been disappointed once for spending the odd quarter hour watching as you two reclaim that rusty pile of Russian steel made over into a British sports car! So you don't know anything about the Jewish lasers that knocked the power grid down here in Texas either? It seemed like such a plausible rumor, don't ya know! Nik and his laser kind of threw me- I mean they started out with a wobbly pillar drill and all!

The steering arm should probably move towards inline with the steering rack as it moves toward full lock. Ackerman will increase as the rack is moved towards the axle centerline (front or rear steer), but generally the basic Ackerman correction is found when the instant center of the steering arms projected through the steering axis meet at the rear axle (also front or rear steer)
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I don't believe I've heard that before but it makes sense. Thanks for the heads up, we'll double check fore/aft alignment before welding the mount in permanently! The position of the steering arm is pretty good on these knuckles, as in Episode 16 I mention how the Crown Vic has nearly identical wheelbase/trackwidth, so the Ackerman should be very close to what Ford used. Cheers!

Remember with suspension, these are ideal representations, but may not always work best, there are many factors that aren’t considered in this weight, spring weight, engine setback, I’ve seen plenty of setups that shouldn’t work on paper, but when tried to move to know working relationships, it actually causes problems, tires and compounds side wall profiles, will help with lots of this, if you plan on braking hard, before corners, bump steer is the only thing you should really work on, The minute you lower a OEM Front suspension assembly, everything goes out the window, no matter what it is, Aftermarket parts will help to relocate, but are a bandage on a wound.. if you are building from scratch, tire hight and ride hight and rake, then build from there..

Love it, but that was a long wait for this video, must have been the head scratching! Mmmm not sure about solid mounts - a bad case of white finger may ensue... Crazy geometry but it looks very good, if only they built the originals like this! That rack must be the shortest there is, but the last thing you want is bump steer with solid mounts... What happens mid corner though? Was that a grease nipple I spied? I suppose you can always get to it by taking the wheel off. All in all, well done! Great viewing from this side of the screen and I think you're braver than we are.
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, pushed hard for the Christmas special, had a week off, then lots of head scratching after that! These kind of videos take ages to make regardless of the actual progress on the car :) ... the solid mounts were a fix to the slop the original Triumph rack mounts developed over time. We're not too worried about NVH, and some power assistance should help with the white knuckle thing! Mid-corner wasn't something covered here but we've had a quick check and all looks ok. I wanted to say it's the shortest rack out there, but figured I'd be corrected by someone! It IS tiny though! The outer tie-rods do have grease fittings, a nice touch... they are factory replacement parts made by Mevotech and we're quite pleased with the quality. Cheers Bob, hope you'll enjoy what's to come!

This is an amazing build you inspired me to do something very similar with my 68 mustang! I am very early in the building stage working on the base frame now. I am extremely worried about my steering situation with going rack and pinion with the ford 302 oil pan will be a mess. we will cross that bridge when we get to it. I could not help but notice your universal joint is moving a lot. I am worried that is going to cause a lot of steering inconsistencies I am looking into the Foxbody style rack because the pinion is set at an angle which I am hoping helps. Best of luck!

Sorry I'm a little late to the party, and forgive me if this is already been brought up, but did you actually watch your video? At approximately 15:20, when you check the steering, watch the double u-joint flop around! The double joint is essentially a very short intermediate steering shaft, and as such, it MUST be supported with a bearing of some sort. Most guys use a spherical heim joint which the shaft passes through, and is welded or bolted to the frame.
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 жыл бұрын

@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 жыл бұрын
😄 glad you enjoyed it! It was a bit of a headache, but interesting to learn about nonetheless! The software I made the animations in is called Blender (amazing open-source program) ... but it's not actually a CAD software, and thus is not very helpful for designing the suspension in the first place. All the modeling was strictly to aid the visualization of this video! We just used basic principles and some fairly straightforward math/measuring to make sure we were in the right area. I must say, it really helped using the front suspension from a car with near-identical wheelbase/trackwidth proportions! Check out these links to learn more about suspension and steering geometry, they really helped me! www.racingaspirations.com/apps/suspension-geometry-calculator/ www.streetmusclemag.com/features/chassis-geometry-101-engineering-speed/ datagenetics.com/blog/december12016/index.html

I don't see a way to fit dust boots to the ends of the rack. The left side would have to cover that jam nut, and the right has no flange provided to fit a boot at all. But leaving them off will expose the rack teeth to the elements. All part of the plan?
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 жыл бұрын
No worries my friend, for once in this build that's all straightforward triumph parts! The one boot has a large end to attach to the aluminum end of the rack, (clearing the jamb nut) and the other boot just clamps onto the straight end... I agree though it should have a raised flange so it won't slip off. Cheers man! 🙂👍

Really great build. You mentioned that you might have some issues with the "heaviness" of the steering. If that problem does arise, you could look at an electric power assist, something like this: www.fuelcurve.com/turn-one-electric-power-steering/ or something similar. It should even fit the tight cockpit of the GT6. Again, great really build, keep up the good work!
