Toucans are actually pretty mean birds. They will eat other birds if given the chance.

Like a lot of birds, toucans are omnivores. They can't get all their nutrients from fruit alone. They use those big beaks to raid cavity and pendant nests of other birds in order to eat the eggs and nestlings. They're also kind of jerks, in the same way house cats are. In that they'll toy with their prey. So yeah, the smaller birds are afraid of them for a good reason. This is also why they make terrible pets, as they can be very destructive.
