Bungo Stray Dogs is a Rushed Masterpiece.

Bungo Stray Dogs seasons 4 and 5 have dropped during this year and to say that they're a wild ride is a severe understatement. The entire ensemble of colorful characters are present here doing all sorts of trickery to in order to gain the upper hand. Seeing all these different groups come into play and the leaders of said groups playing crazy mind games is so entertaining to see. But, in this arc especially, there's just SO much going on and the pacing doesn't really help with that. We're getting betrayals left and right, crazy schemes built up, but all of this is getting thrown at us at light speed. There's absolutely no breaks in these seasons of Bungo Stray Dogs and although I usually like fast pacing, Bungo Stray Dogs might have gone a little too far this season in my opinion. There have already been some things cut out, I'm sorry dear Sigma, and I'm unsure what else might be left out. Still, at the end of the day, I'm having an absolute BLAST watching Bungo Stray Dogs despite the pacing. It helps that it looks absolutely incredible too.

It definitely feels like BONES is cutting a bunch of content from the Manga which is fine sometimes but for the most part the manga content is really good however they could be doing that so that BEAST and/or STORMBRINGER can take the rest of season 6 which with BEAST is confirmed from the BEAST! Dazai concept art however I would not mind if they just did STORMBRINGER to fill out season 6 and just made BEAST a mini-series or movie

I wish the anime didn't skip out on things that happened in the manga (like Sigma's backstory, Tachihara's break down, 6 PAGES OF MAIN CHARACTER BACKSTORY, etc), or at least paced a bit of this season a little better (like the battle w/ Fukuchi). !!! SEASON 5 SPOILERS !!! Don't get me wrong the animation is amazing, as an animator myself, I thought the animation and cinematography was beautiful but what really got me this season was Akutagawa's death. It was rushed so badly it hardly gave you time to think, I had already known it was going to happen (as a manga reader) but usually w/ characters I love a lot when their death is animated I still freak, in fact when I was re-reading the bsd manga to analyze it and I STILL almost cried at his death in the manga. Akutagawa's death was NOT it, the camera angle was really bad and where was the smile? His stupid (really pretty) smile was gone and he looked ugly💀. And guess what!? In the manga he is so pretty it's insane that anime!Aku and manga!Aku are the same person. Bones also seems to love to get rid of certain characters (Aku, Dazai, Fyodor) emotions and it upsets me quite a bit because it doesn't show the characters how they truly are and it leads to many people to mischaracterize many MANY characters. TLDR: BSD is a good anime don't get me wrong but I love Akutagawa and am mad at bones for rushing and making his death look ugly and they take away his emotions as well as MURDER others characters development/get rid of important scenes. Anyways; stan Akutagawa, hate Dazai, love Atsushi. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk sorry for the long comment I like bsd a lot.

I think it's important to mention just how many chapters get adapted per episode by bones, and how that affects the overall pacing of the story. In the first three seasons. Each episode pretty much adapted around 2 chapters of the manga, and occasionally adapted 3 when the plot required it. This meant that there were some scenes cut out occasionally, but it was mostly some gag that we could honestly have lived without and so it was fine. Now, most of season 4 follows the same scheme. I actually disagree with you when it comes to Tachihara's reveal, cause i think that was handled pretty well, with the overall pacing around it being good. Then episode 12 happened. Remember what i wrote before about each chapters adapting 2/3 chapters? Well, this episode adapted *4* . This means that stuff that they had to cut out scenes that were really important (like Sigma's reveal and Tachihara showing doubts on the ADA being guilty) and fans got reasonably upset, cause those were scenes that we were waiting to see animated for quite a while. Ironically, had they NOT decided to split "perfect crime" in two, they would have had an additional episode on their hands and split skyfall into two parts, which would have benefitted the pacing a lot. Season 5 is the season that adapts more chapters per episode. Every episode now adapts around 3 chapters, with ep 3 adapting 4. They only recently slow down a bit, with the last episode adapting around 2 chapters and a half. I think an issue Bones is having is that those seasons didn't have a clear point where they could stop. The previous season where pretty self-contained, by that i mean that there were clearly moments where you could say "yup, this is the final fight. This is where it ends". This arc, on the other hand, is much longer and can't be properly contained within one season, which means it's more difficult for them to work on. I also would like to spend some words on the pacing of the manga, which, to me, sometimes has the opposite problem. By that i mean that there are sometimes chapters and events that get stretched put waaaay to much. I heard fans complain that we are already in the airport, but I'm not that surprised, because everything that happened before, when it comes to it, could really be condensed in a couple of episodes (which is exactly what happened).

One of the reasons I believe they are animating more chapters is because the chapters are getting shorter. For example, the newest chapter, 110, was so short that the whole chapter could have either fit in 109 or been considered a 109.5 If you look at older chapters, for example, Chapter 40, its way longer than the newer ones.

The pacing is pretty accurate, especially in season 5's Vampire Outbreak Arc, because it's not actually a long arc but rather just overly stalled by Asagiri with a heck ton half chapters over the course of 32 months - which we find was so the anime could conclude it first.

Yeah, the pacing in the new season is actually much more reasonable than the first two seasons in my opinion. It knows when to take things slow and when to make things fast which shows good director abilities. Plus, Asagiri himself always supervises the anime and approves everything so I never worry about it and I always like the outcome

Honestly it's a shame the pacing is so fast, especially this season. They've already covered almost all the chapters of the manga so far so that'd mean we'll have to wait a few years for a new season, and I bet most people are going to get over bsd by the time a sixth season will be announced, which is kinda sad if you think about it. I'm also kinda scared of how they're going to end this season cause this arc is far from over.. I would've said ending the season with the climax in chapter 109 would be the best option but knowing that season 5 is going to have only 10 episodes and that they just released the 8th episode last week in which they covered chapter 101, I'd say that's really improbable😭 besides, starting off season 6 with yet ANOTHER climax (the one in chapter 110) wouldn't be a good idea.. so I'm kinda curious how this season will end

I can't completely blame Bones for the pacing to be honest. The manga's pacing is also a bit inconsistent and it goes from moving at a breakneck pace to slowing down for no reason. This is most evident with the past 20 chapters i.e the Airport and Mersault chapters. I would actually argue that Season 2 and 3 were a lot more rushed compared to Seasons 4 and 5. Season 2 in particular cut out quite a bit of content, but it seems to be fan favorite of many.

It would explain why the chapters have been so short, he's been teasing us, and letting the anime catch up, so everyone is on the same page at the same time for once. Then the manga will start ramping up again. I hope. I'm ready for this arc to be done.

I’m currently writing something about the DOA because I like to struggle. It was so rushed, I’ve forgotten some many things. I now have to watch again and actually read the manga. There is little to nothing I can remember other than a few minor details about Sigma, and I’m still struggling to write about him. Not to add up the fact Bones didn’t animate everything and now I have to read all of it.

I mean admittedly... I don't entirely blame them rushing some... cause as is, it'll take minimum 2 seasons and a movie for decay of angels plot alone... if not 3 full seasons. Like I mean the portway to the sky portion ALONE has been ongoing for I think longer than the entirety of the main plot in season 3 episode count wise... and that's with there being more chapters per episode... if they went at the normal pace, we'd probably be left there even longer... and don't get me wrong, I love the airport part... but then if they went slower we'd probably be stuck on a cliffhanger from season 5 where we're still in the airport or mersault... I mean also consider how not only did they adapt more chapters per episode but they deigned to not have a backstory arc in Season 5 at all unless they tag it in at the end... it makes it feel like they knew they'd need to pump out a lot to make it get to a good stopping point... there still are definitely some issues and honestly they should have waited a season so there'd be a few extra chapters for them to work with cause as is it is... they're gonna run out of chapters before getting to the end of the season

I think it was rushed because as they wait for content for S6 they can animate other BSD content like Beast or Storm-bringer or even the light novels like Dazais entrance exam. Its my speculation and I could be wrong but it would give the audience a breather from the chaos that's currently ongoing in the BSD universe. Its also something people would like to see, a BEAST production is definitely something I would watch since the story is an interesting concept despite also being fast paced.

I think that they're going at a just right pace, if they really took their sweet time, we'd probably end up with a season full of filler but instead we got a season where it's never boring and everything is happening one after the other to like show how the characters can never seem to catch a break so I think the directors made that decision on purpose

I regret it so much that I didn't watch BSD when it first aired, cus I binged this series up to S3 a long while ago (before covid iirc) and I love it. The story honestly keeps on blowing my mind with the unexpected outcome. But then again, there's no news after that and because I binged it, my short term memory can't handle the big amount of information, especially when the story has a lot of thinking involved. My brain just couldn't remember it as clearly as the first time I watched it, hence when S4 aired, I literally have no idea what happened in S3 (Yes that's dumb, I know, sorry😭). Like, how do we get here? Who are these new red coat villains group? I also forgot most of the names😭. I still enjoy it tho, but I just wish my memory is still fresh when I finished S3 so that I can keep up with it better.

I think that season 5 pace is so fast bc they wanted to animate chapter 109 ( chuuya killing dazai ) before having to wait 3-5 years to have enough material to make another season That scene is so iconic that's why they probably wanted to animate it to please the fans, or else we would have to wait like 5 years in order to see it animated. You’re clearly a new fan. Its not rushed bro. They treated it with care. Even the artists and directors who are involved in the Animation said it in their tweets. And we long time fans can see it as well. Some scenes may have not appeared the way some of us want it to be. An Artist myself I can tell BSD was not rushed.
