Bunny boots: The arctic's ultimate winter boot - a comprehensive review and overview.

You may have seen us in our snowmobile videos wearing these big looking white winter boots.
The black version is commonly referred to as mickey mouse boots, and are good to -20, the black ones have a different style rubber than these white ones, that’s made with more oil/diesel resistant rubber.
The white bunny boots are an improved version of the black boot, designed for use in even colder temperatures, as these are rated down to -54 celsius.
these winter boots keep your feet warm by sandwiching up to one inch of wool felt in between two vacuum tight layers of rubber.
the shoe laces tight at the top, to keep the air in, basically creating a vacuum flask where you own body heat keeps your feet warm.
The boot has an air valve on the side, Water can come in and ruin your boot if the valve is not closed. Recently we have gone as far as shoe gooing this valve closed sut so we don’t have to worry about water coming in through there at all.
The Bunny boots have a date inside of when they were made. My bunny boots here were made in 1975, where as these pairs were more recent from the early 2000’s.
They also have a weight on the heel, that indicates how much they should weigh. If they are heavier than the weight indicated, it means they are most likely water contaminated and will not work anymore.
While we are here, I should add that these boots come in a variety of sizes and widths. Every size has a choice of narrow, regular or wide.
There are multiple manufacturers of these type boots, we have tried the Bata, Actom and Airboss, but found the Bata boots to be the best, as the rubber is the softest and most durable.
We love these boots because there is no liner to dry at the end of the day.
We once snowshoed 600km from our home to the central yukon, and we used the black version of these winter boots for that trip. When you are cold camping, it is so nice to not have to worry about drying liners.
Another reason why it is such a benefit that these boots don’t have liners is overflow, or any kind of water.
If you make sure the valve is closed, and you have shoe goo’ed any cracks in the rubber. You can confidently walk around in overflow or cross creeks. Yes, you will most likely get water in your boot, but your body heat will warm that water up. This can make or break a day. When we snowmobiled almost 1000 km to Dawson city last year we had a few days in a row where we battled overflow time and time again. and Ok, my bunny boots got wrecked on that trip, but I have to say that I spent hours in the water. Even with the waterlogged boot, I was able to finish the trip with warm feet.
As someone suffering from Raynauds syndrome, I have to say that I absolutely love these boots, and I completely trust them for keeping my feet warm.
Because it’s getting harder to find these boots, and they are getting very expensive, we are going to try out a different type boot for this winter.
Philippe may have the opportunity to go work in resolute bay this winter, and we wanted to replace his water logged bunny boots with a boot that will keep his feet warm if he goes that far into the arctic.
So We have asked our arctic colleagues, what they recommend. They recommended us the Baffin Apex. The Baffin Apex is a boot with a liner, so our strategy is to have purchased a second liner. This way, for snowmobiling, if we spend time in the overflow and the liner gets soaked, we have a spare liner that should last until we set up camp and can dry out the wet one. Not ideal of course, but we will see!
Leandra also has a pair of Steger mukluks, that are awesome for around town and at camp, but for snowmobiling, they don’t provide as much support and stability as a pair of hard rubber boots. That said, they are very warm and look great!
So there we go, our review on bunny boots. are they the best boots ever made? I think the Bata ones definitely outrank any other type of winter boot I have ever used, especially knowing that I can seriously count on them to keep my raynauds suffering feet warm and comfortable.
The only place to get these boots nowadays is on military surplus.

I have cold feet and doing construction in the MN winters can be very tough. These Bunny Boots (about $100 , 6-8 years ago) solved that problem forever. It was a great investment.

I have the Stegers mukluks too!!! I absolutely love how cute they are and I get tons of compliments on them.. unfortunately I don’t live wear it’s super cold.. I do get a couple of cold days a year and I have tried to wear them on other days and they are so stinking warm I can barely do it!!! I think I need to move north.. lol. Bata brand bunny boots are the absolute best. They quit making them in 1992 so if you have little feet (I stuff my feet into 7s and 8s in Fairbanks Alaska) you can still find them and the rubber is pretty good. There is a company that’s making a new Vapor barrier boot that’s supposed to be even better than the Batas.

Yeah, I was able to fit the men’s 8 and am still able to find some thankfully! but they are getting more expensive. Oh what’s the brand that is supposed to be better than the Batas?! That would be amazing!
