Preparing for a Family Snowmobile Trip to the Canadian Arctic.
An account of one Month of Preparations for Our Family Snowmobile Trip to the Canadian Arctic
Embarking on a family snowmobile trip to the Canadian Arctic is not just about packing bags; it's a meticulous process of ensuring every aspect of our journey is carefully planned and prepared for. Over the past month, our family has been deeply involved in various activities to equip ourselves for this adventure. From meticulous food preparation to reinforcing equipment, every task is a step towards making our Arctic expedition safe and enjoyable.
Food Preparation:
Food is at the heart of our Arctic adventure, and preparing it has been a significant focus of our preparations. We've approached this task methodically, starting with creating spreadsheets to calculate exactly what we need for the duration of our trip. With a combination of dry foods like lentils and pasta, supplemented by meat from our freezer, we've ensured a balanced and nutritious diet for our journey. But it doesn't stop there; we've pre-cooked meals, vacuum-sealed them, and frozen some items to guarantee freshness and convenience during our trip.
Sewing Mitts:
In the midst of our preparations, another essential task has been sewing mitts. Understanding the importance of keeping our hands warm in the harsh Arctic cold, we've dedicated time to crafting insulated mittens. Using sturdy materials and careful stitching, sourced from local trappers. Leandra has made mitts and a hat, that will provide both comfort and protection during our snowmobile rides.
Reinforcing Toboggans:
Our expedition heavily relies on toboggans to transport supplies across the Arctic terrain. Recognizing their crucial role, we've spent time reinforcing these sleds. From adding extra supports, changing the runners and being prepared to have hitches break, Philippe has been busy manufacturing and strengthening our precious toboggans for this snowmobile trip. every effort has been made to ensure our toboggans are sturdy and reliable, capable of withstanding the challenges of the Arctic wilderness.
Welcoming a Surprise Visitor:
Amidst our preparations, we've had the unexpected joy of welcoming a surprise visitor- 2 actually! A mom and calf moose walked through the yard while we were busy doing preparations for our trip. Their presence has brought added excitement.
Homesteading. In this video, we have lots of behind the scenes footage of our daily life off the grid. Justin recently switched to homeschooling and we have been really happy with that.
As the countdown to our family snowmobile trip to the Canadian Arctic draws closer, each day has been filled with purposeful activities aimed at ensuring a safe, comfortable, and unforgettable adventure. Whether it's meticulously planning our meals, crafting insulated mitts, reinforcing toboggans, welcoming surprise visitors, or embracing homesteading principles, every task contributes to the overall readiness for our Arctic expedition. With anticipation and excitement building, we're eager to embark on this journey, knowing that our preparations have equipped us for the challenges and joys that await amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the Canadian Arctic.
We will try to post as many updates as we can on our youtube channel, as we advance on the snowmobile trip. make sure to subscribe if you haven't already.
