Great point. Spock would go on to become a timeless role model for intellectuals, and he would eventually add to his logic the additional characteristics of wisdom and even compassion.

so true, when I was born I was part of the sixties scoop where the canadian government declared the Native population to be culturally bereft and incapable of raising children so they marched onto reservations, into hospitals and into homes and snatched every Native babies they could find and put them in orphanages. I grew up being despised by the white community because I was just an Indian and viewed as some kind of a freak by the Native community. It blew my mind when I saw Spock who as a half breed human Vulcan experienced the same issue where both sides could only see the negative from the opposite cultural background. I had always seen myself as just me with no one else like me and it was exciting to discover Spock and watch him learn to embrace the better characteristics of both sides and define himself.

Yeah, good call about logic not being the be-all / end-all. Something that shows up in the reboot when he in conversing with...well, himself, and he suggests to 'young Spock' to not be afraid to rely on an 'act of faith', essentially pay attention to intuition, gut feelings, etc, and not just logic. This episode is a great example of a recurring theme. The need for human qualities, more than just pure, machine-like logic, or even computer level intelligence, precision, and speed of calculation, is crucial for command (of a human crew). Why would they put all the important people in this tiny ship? To make the episode interesting to us viewers, of course. That and because Spock is the chief science officer studying a semi-unknown phenomenon with unknown scientific effects, McCoy is the lead medical officer there to tend to any medical needs of a crew studying a semi-unknown phenomenon in case of unexpected medical effects, and Scotty to tend to the needs of a spacecraft that might face unexpected technological problems while so close to a semi-unknown phenomenon with unexpected electronic effects. Really obvious when you think about it. And also if you want there to actually be a sensible, logical reason for them to actually be there.

The Galileo 7 prop was built by the model kit company AMT for the production in exchange for the model kit rights. Unfortunately after the series was cancelled the prop often sat in storage in a state of disrepair. Happily it was recently restored and has been displayed in various locations throughout the US. Starships can indeed travel below the speed of light as well as above. What's called "space normal" speed will come to be known as "impulse" drive. Another good video. Star Trek is ultimately about human beings and their friends. Spock is primarily the Chief Science Officer, but he is the First Officer as well, so Kirk is smart in giving Spock opportunities to command, cause Spock has to sort some things out, and Kirk needs his shipmates to respect Spock's decisions the same as they would respect Kirk's. Spock using what he considers logic is also him projecting his beliefs/mores onto another group of creatures that may not react to things the way Spock thinks they will. An appropriate lesson for today's world.

The remastering really made a big impact on this one's rewatchability. This is one of my favorite episodes. The "giant" monsters could use a bit more CGI. Or don't show them at all. The quasar would still have been there after the medicine delivery. I know, they needed an excuse to tell the story. They didn't even need to use a shuttlecraft when a space probe could be launched and have done just as good or better. By this time they'd probably have studied a lot of quasars. They'd probably have been old hat by this point.

I think you hit it on the head Bunnytails, the "laughter" at the end was a way to release the tension build up in the previous two days. It's a somewhat reasonable boat crew. An officer in charge of the mission, a coxswain (pronounced coxsun) to steer the boat, and an engineer in case repairs are needed. Three including McCoy and Boma are onboard for research purposes and the yeoman is there to keep the records of the research. Due to the high potential for danger in the maelstrom it even makes sense to have more experienced officers present. They have a better chance of success if anything goes wrong due to a wide latitude of experiences.

Heya Bunny. I was really touched at your tearing up after the resolution. I know it wasn't faked because it's an odd place to 'fake' emotion. (I'm not accusing you or being fake but I've seen fake reactors all over KZbin. So you passed my test.) What you were actually doing is validating the existence of something we writers call dramatic tension. That you were literally tense for 50 minutes and when the plot resolved itself with a fairly happy ending you were able to relax, smile, and let the tension out. What is particularly touching is your growing care for these characters. When you said, "Leave Spock alone!" it means the series is sneaking into your heart. From there I can't predict but many of us fan fans discover this original series... ... has moved into our souls. No, seriously.

I absolutely love that you enjoyed this episode so much. This one is often derided, not so much because of poor story telling, but rather, because of some of the silliness you acknowledged, i.e. giant ewoks, spears being thrown willy-nilly, etc. It's a great story, with great character development. We, again, get to see the development of the nature of the relationship between Spock and Bones - while at times clearly antagonistic, it's a relationship of balance, and one which we persistently get to watch grow. We also get to see Spock's individual growth - How well does pure logic serve him at all times, and in particular, at times of extremes? Kudos to you, bunnytails. You get this almost 60 year old TV series, with it's cardboard sets and funny looking monsters, for what it is: A phenomenon who's strengths launched 12 TV series, 13 theatrical movies, and which is still very much alive. The Galileo shuttlecraft is one of the most iconic production pieces from the original "Star Trek" series, and the exterior mock-up used throughout the show is one of the few ship constructs to have survived to today, alongside the eleven-foot master model of the USS Enterprise and the recently-rediscovered three-foot model. Each of these were constructed by the late Richard C. Datin, Jr., whose team would only be publicly acknowledged for their contributions to the franchise in 1990s. Two of these models are on display in museums today. The eleven-foot model is on display in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC, while the Galileo exterior is housed at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston. Get well soon, Bunny, and congrats on making it halfway through Season 1!

These spacecraft models were iconic and inspirational. In 1966, the "Space Race" was in full swing, with the Soviets having the early lead: first unmanned orbiter, Sputnik, 1957; first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, 1961; first woman in space, Valentina Tereshkova, 1963; first space walk, Alexei Leonov, 1965. However, the U.S.A. completed the first docking maneuver in space in 1966, and they landed the first humans on the moon in 1969. So it is no wonder that TOS, from 1966 to 1969, developed such a devoted fan base. [Not to overlook its optimism and humanitarian spirit.]

19:25 "At the end, when they were just like all laughing ..." This was a standard practice in many television series in the 1960s, to end a serious episode with a scene of people laughing at some quip. I suppose it could be justified as comic relief, although it always felt awkward. Maybe it was their way of saying "happy ending", at least for the shows' heroes. 19:42 "I feel like in a situation where you have this immense sense of relief, all of your emotions can definitely come out like that ..." From personal experience, I can tell you, that is 100 percent true.

Absolutely right. This is what is missing in modern sci-fi. There is no heart. I don't want to watch "heroes" who have no character, display no friendship, have no courage, and who have no love for others.

Poor Bunny Tails! I'm so sorry that you're still dealing with that God awful flu. If there's any consolation, women's immune systems are better able to deal with viral infections than men's. It's why covid has been hitting men harder than women; men's immune systems don't handle covid infections as well. It's why men are more likely to die. Anyhow, this was a FANTASTIC episode. And very intense, kept you leaning at the edge of your seat, chewing your last nail. In this episode, Spock's logical Vulcan mind is being put to the ultimate test: to decide who gets to live and who dies. And here, we also see the limits of Spock's logical mind, that even HE can make a wrong decision, and even HE can be capable of engaging in an act of desperation. I loved Scotty's ingenuity here. Yes, those large anthropoid creatures were scary indeed, definitely guarded their territory. I wouldn't want to run into any of those things in a dark alley! They did a very good job with that. This episode was a powerful, cogent reminder of how hostile space can be, and how even with all of their advanced 23rd century technology, when things go south, when people get separated from their advanced technology, the consequences can be very desperate and grave. This was a very humbling reminder that even with their warp speed ships and powerful weapons, the galaxy was a very, very big place where your life could be snuffed out at an instant. Humility is absolutely key and crucial to traveling to other planets, especially ones that are unknown and unexplored. In this episode, they called that green cloud a quasar. However, this was not a quasar, but actually a doubly ionized oxygen nebula., a completely different phenomenon. Quasars, a.k.a. quasi-stellar objects, were discovered in 1964 and were called quasi-stellar radio sources. They didn't know what they were back then. Today, most experts agree that they're the compact center of a galaxy. They're extremely bright and send out massive amounts of energy. way, WAY more than a star would. Many are supermassive black holes located in the center of many galaxies. Note that the nebula in this episode was green. This is from the doubly ionized oxygen, which gives off a green color. Oxygen is normally a negatively charge ion, but doubly ionized oxygen is O+2 rather than O-2. This is found in space where there are extremely high temperatures like what is found in some nebulas, the remnant of a star that exploded. The expert on quasars was played by Don Marshall. For people who watched the Irwin Allen TV show Land Of The Giants which aired on ABC back in 1968-1970, they'll know who Don Marshall is. He was the first officer of the Spindrift, the suborbital transport ship they were in before it was sent off course causing them to land on another planer where people were 12 times larger than on Earth.

9:29 "Mr. Boma, return with me to the _Galileo._ Mr. Gaetano, you remain on guard here." ☹ _Nooooo!_ Mr. Spock, you're posting a _sentry._ Surely, you see the folly in leaving him there by _himself._

Great episode. Dives deep and headfirst into Spock's character and even his command style. EXCELLENT episode.

12:40 Hey, where did the chick go? She could be doing something. Maybe as bait, at least. 13:37 Oh there she is. Probably trying to be the one person not pissing someone off. Way things are going, all the boys will kill each other off, and she can fly out of there on her own.

Another solid episode. A great lesson in being flexible and the importance to being open to new ways of doing things.

2:51 it's good when they show Uhura standing other watches, here she is standing science watch in Spock's absence 🙂 ((swoon)) at Nichelle Nichols 🙂

Nice reaction - one of the nice aspects of going thru all the entries like this is discovering "sleepers" along the way, little gems that have somehow remained under the radar - interesting how deliberately this series presents itself as a forum for competing "religions" - in this case, Logic vs Emotion - I thought Spock might come out on top here, considering how everyone was ganging up on him - and, in a way, he did, but it was in the form of him Learning His Lesson, or at least earning the respect of his crew re his ability to demonstrate Humanity - this is one aspect of the show that really stands out after all these years, its regard for simple humanity and decency, and its willingness to assert this thru a process of inquiry and self-examination - I did feel a bit sorry for Spock being isolated in this argument - the way I always felt about Oscar the Grouch always being pressured negatively re his unique temperament (also, w this episode, I appreciated their respect for Legos - the title should have been "Logic, Legos and Laestrygonians" lol)

Yes I agree that this was a great episode. It showed the pressures of leadership and command. how its lonely at the top. The crew has the potential to revolt and challenge authority.

You spoke for Scotty just after the Galileo landed, "Don't talk to me right now," playing off of his dismissive wave. I think you're right. There's extensive damage to the shuttle, so Scotty knows what happens next for him. He'll be expected to fix it, and he can't expect that task to be easy, or in some respects even possible.

another great reaction, you never disappoint! I cracked up when you noted that ALL the key personnel were heading out on a trivial mission! John Scalzi's book "Redshirts" takes that idea an runs with it - and does it well! Keep up the great reviews!

"Shock them again," you say. Good observation; with the shuttle's engines running, the batteries should be getting recharged (if this works anything like an automobile), so Scotty's warning against using more charge wouldn't apply. Plot oversight spotted by bunnytails!

This episode litteraly changed my entire life. As a 5 year old boy it introduced me to the idea of logic, and logical thought vs. emotional reaction. Which led me to embrace yet temper both. Literaly defining a base part of my personality.

This is one of my favorite episodes of TOS-EASILY.LOVED the extras in this episode also,especially-BOMA-LOL. He was being very disrespectful towards Spock tho,the ship's XO ( 2nd in command )but,Spock enforced being in command of the mission. Also good screen time for Scotty and McCoy also.Watching this as a little kid scared the mess outta me. LOL.Enjoyed your reactions and comments, they were funny as usual.

The actor who played Boma, Don Marshall, had previously guest-starred in Gene Roddenberry’s earlier series “The Lieutenant.” Roddenberry intended to bring Boma back, but for whatever reason the stars didn’t align and it never happened. Marshall, who passed in 2016, is probably best remembered for his starring role in the TV series “Land of the Giants.”

1:50 That's a good point, I was in the real Navy on submarines and that would never happen. You would never have a department head or the XO out doing something like that! You would send at most a division officer (such as the TSO, Tactical Sonar Officer); those are more administrative roles that can be filled by any officer. 🙂 There's a story, it's actually Hard SF (meaning, science fiction that tries to conform to the known laws of physics, such as no Faster than Light travel, etc), called "The Cold Equations" from 1954....an 18 year old woman sneaks aboard a rocket headed for a planet with emergency medical supplies....the problem is that her extra weight means they don't have enough fuel for a safe landing and would crash into the planet....she ends up willingly steeping out the airlock to save the others and ensure the medical supplies are delivered 😲
