Yeah, they made quite a few edits along with the dropped F bombs when they decided they wanted the movie to come in with a PG rating instead of an R rating. Like all the drug references. That’s why Tony Shalhoub’s character is so laid back. He’s supposed to be stoned the whole time. They thought it’d be hilarious if they’re “Scotty” instead of reacting with the typical (add in the Scottish accent.) “I CAN’T GIVE ER ANYMORE CAPTAIN!! IF I PUSH ER ANYMORE SHE’LL TEAR THE SHIP APART!!”, they’d get the stoner’s “Hey guys. They’re…telling me…the ship can’t take it…ship’s breaking apart…just FYI, ya know”. 😂🥹

@@bunnytailsREACTS That's quite interesting. The concept of "comic relief" in a tragedy is well known, but there seems to be no term for the opposite effect: that is, I have been unable to find a phrase referring to a tragic moment in a work of comedy. It's less common, of course, but it does sometimes happen (as in Galaxy Quest), but several sources state that there is no antonym for "comic relief" and no phrase even discussing the idea of a tragic moment in a comedy.
@T.Florenz
@T.Florenz 3 ай бұрын
@@MarkRyan-u3u I think there's a theory of comedy, that it has to be rooted in deep pathos for the characters and high-stakes in their world. Like, think of the premise of Mrs. Doubtfire -- there's nothing inherently comedic in the idea of a man potentially losing his whole family. Galaxy Quest is a story about bitter, disillusioned actors feeling used and discarded in their industry and an alien civilization facing extermination. Both of these premises need to be played with absolute sincerity to work comedically. So that may be why. But I do agree that we should have a word for it!

A great homage to our beloved series. Lenard Nemoy often wore the Spock ears around his home to find the character. Which he eventually nailed. Sigourney Weaver's line about there always being ducts is a reference to the Alien franchise. The we work together or not at all is a reference to the animated series. When the racist studio didn't want Nichelle Nichols or the other none white actors to voice their characters. Their friends and costars told the studio if they aren't welcomed then no one will do the show. Sam Rockwell is fantastic as the "Red Shirt" representative.

The whole, "I'm not going to say that stupid line." actually has some basis in reality. After Star Trek ended, Leonard Nimoy felt that being in Star Trek hurt his acting career and said he was never going to say, "Live long and prosper." ever again. A few years went by and one of the first Star Trek conventions happened. Leonard did not go but a couple Star Trek alumni did. After the convention they contacted him and told him he really needed to attend one. He reluctantly agreed and went to the next one he could attend. While there he met fan after fan telling him how much his character Mr. Spock meant to them and one fan even said they were thinking of unaliveing themselves but hearing Spock say, "Live long and Prosper." caused them to stop. Also, many fans over the years told him that they decided to go into science because of Mr. Spock. Needless to say, Leonard did not have any problems saying, "That stupid line." after that.

@@amlor Not to start an argument, but Blish didn't write it. The only original Star Trek story he wrote was the first Star Trek novel, "Spock Must Die". "Visit to a Weird Planet" was written by Jean Lorrah and Willard F. Hunt and was published in the fanzine, Spocknalia. The sequel was written by Ruth Berman (no erelation to RIck) and was also first published in Spocknalia, but was included in the first anthology of (mostly) fan-written stories, "Star Trek: The New Voyages". There was a "Star Trek: The New Voyages 2" but I never saw another one after that. There were some good stories in that first one, and one truly great one called, "Mind Sifter" by Shirley S. Maiewski.

@eufus, they’re still working on doing it, even without Rickman… but with his death and then the pandemic, it’s entered into “Development Hell”… if they eventually do make it, I think they should make it in the style of the animated series of Star Trek. I could more easily forgive an animated version of Rickman’s character with a sound alike, than to recast him with a different actor.

It's great how you almost instantly expressed the theme of this one; yes, these shows have a bit of corn to them, but there is absolutely a significance and depth to them. They are inspiring, enlightening and even life changing. So wonderful to see the crew finally understand their show was more than just geek references and laser guns and cool outfits. It was about what it is to be human, about conveying that human experience and understanding it. The film has a perfect mix of humor and drama that is very, very rare. It's poking fun at the genre but also doing it with obvious GREAT love. One of the very few "modern classics" IMO. Now, you gotta work on a famous one-liner...!

This is how Star Trek went from being a tv show to something more because fans began asking questions about stuff that the writers only intended for the episode that it appeared in, fans made it the Star Trek Universe. Sadly this is also reflective of the real disconnect between actors of Star Trek how actors would before filming scenes would edit scripts taking lines intended for other actors, William Shatner did this a lot so much that when he was given the director's chair for Star Trek V actor Geoge Takei was reluctant to apprise his role as Sulu. This "hammer" parallels not just Leonard Nimoy who was only known as Spock despite playing other characters in other shows but reflects actors being type cast by studios themselves.

The last act of the movie is a tribute to Star Trek Fans. I think it's the reason this movie was so popular with ST fans. It paid some love to the fandom. When I was a teen in the 1980s, I had the printed blueprints of the USS Enterprise, watched all the episodes over and over, read the novelizations of the episodes, and hundreds of Star Trek novels. Right now, on my bookshelf behind me, I have the "Star Trek Technical Manual", "20th Century Computers and How They Worked by Lieutenant Commander Data", "making of..." books about some of the movies...just all sorts of fun stuff like that. Oh, and I also have four Tribbles scattered around the house. And the T in my name stands for Tiberius. My dad was also a Star Trek fan.

Amblin did the distribution of the movie and since Spielberg founded the company, he was curious to see what Galaxy Quest was all about, especialy since he wasn't too fond of Tim Allen (at that time, Tim Allen was mostly famous because of the series Home Improvement). As luck would have it, they were shooting the Malthazar torture scene, and Spielberg had to admit he was wrong about Tim Allen's acting abilities. On that note, right after they filmed that scene, Tim asked for some time alone in his trailer, to which Alan Rickman replied "he just experienced acting".

If you were a fan of Dr Lazarus's arc in the film, you should read two books by Leonard Nimoy titled "I am not Spock" and "I am Spock". They deal with him being resentful of being typecast as Spock, and then him realizing what his character meant to the fans and coming around and embracing playing Spock. Both are good reads.

This is a really great movie! It has so much going for it. It is funny, heart warming, a loving tribute, there's character growth and redemption, and the good guys win! However, thinking about actors having that one line, I think Bunny should have one. I even have one for her -- "I'm watching you". She could start every reaction with "I haven't seen it before, but today Galaxy Quest... I'm watching you!" Say the line, Bunny...

You've got to hand it to these actors for doing this obvious Star Trek parody, especially Sigourney Weaver (with as much cleavage as she ever shows in any of her films) and Alan Rickman (with his detest of the tag line "By Grabthar's hammer" they keep making him say). Such good sports! And the premise that real aliens mistake these actors for actual space warriors is inspired.
