2:16 "Ladies" are not allowed. It's actually not in any Buddhist canons. It's just a part of Myanmar's culture that gets mixed up with religion. So, it's kinda sad to see such an outdated tradition being allow in a country where arguably the most peaceful religion "Buddhism" is the dominant one. Lovely nation with lovely people.

PS One This is also practice in old temples of India. But should be outdated by now.

Not woman are regarded as lower. But the Saints the Monks and Women naturally not meant to be together and stay close up. Coz of the sense, the vision of women (worldly attractions) can accidentally disturb and stimulate the monks who hasnt attainted Arhat, the mental stage to overcome and ignore all greed, lust, anger, and harsh mental impurities. For the case of the Saints the Monks attained Arhat, the sensations and stimuli never will be matter coz they have attainded an advanced mental stage. But even in that case, a woman and an Arhat monk should not be alone certainly not coz of distractions to the Monk anymore but coz of the Scence can cause the normal people viewer who dun know abt the Monk or real situation think wrong, speak wrong, believe wrong, and cause false accusations, rumors, false news that lead to disgrace the Monk, the Sammgha, the Monkhood, the community of Deciples of the Buddha, and unnecessary explanations, answers and talks and this situation can cause bad deeds, misdeeds for the ones who think wrong, speak wrong, believe wrong, accuse wrong abt the Arhat or Normal Monk and bad big returns from the Karma if the accused person is not at false at all and even if the person they think wrong accuse wrong is Arhat Monk. Thats why "Matuka" women should not be mixed and should stay at a limited distance lawed by the Buddha. (Rederence to Authentic Buddhist Scriptures, Theravada Tri Pitaka) So, in Authentic Buddhism, an existence and a state (human, man,woman, animal, one at hell, one at celecial abodes) is not permanent, change 1 life after another acc. to their deeds and last mental inclination at the dying moment, so in this life one may get manhood but in next, may be womanhood. So no discrimination at heart, as forms are impermanent according to their own Karma, good deeds and bad deeds in record on self-conscious. But its super clear that a woman and a Monk should not be very near, and alone. And It just Shouldnt at all. Not Discrimination but Common Sense and Universal Proper Thing. Women can see the Buddha, hear the Dhamma preseaching by Monks or the Buddha himself, be present in the hall, and speak to the Monks, discuss with the Monks at a proper Distance. At Burmese homes, woman are mostly the ones who do daily paying homages, offering Buddha flowers, water, food, and light or fragrances, cleaning and maintaining the Shrine where Buddha Image that represents real Buddha stays. So they have to go near the Buddha Image to clean tto maintaim to take or place things. As Burmese people believe Shwedagon Pagoda, enshrined with the Lord Buddha's hair relics, and this Maha Muni Image @Mandalay having placed together with the Lord Buddha when He is Alive to copy the Essence and Aura of the Buddha to be worshipped and cherished by the people and the generations to come in the absence of the Lord Buddha as a Clone Image of the Buddha. So, they cherished and highly-valued These Sacred Buddhisy Heritages, taking to the very heart that the lands where These Heritages lie are Sacred Land and take off their foor wearings, head wearings and women keep a distance and worship humbly from This Great Buddha Image as It were the Real Buddha Himself. Every Morning, a Vernerable Monk offer cleaning scented water and perform Face Cleaning Ceremony of the Buddha Image as a daily duty since age-old time.

Ikr. These people give Buddhism a bad name. There is no mention of men and women being different in terms of holiness in Buddhism. Buddha also say that gender does not matter when practicing Buddhism when people ask him if only men can be Buddha. But they still make "ladies not allowed" signs. And the men sit wherever they want so there's even less space for women to pray. Culture is truly a bane of religion.

Hello Kara and Nate, I have been following your channel since Peru and I think you guys are great. I am a Burmese and I would like to correct you on why "ladies are not allowed" at Shwedagon. It is not because the pagoda is so holy Nate, it is about traditions. Buddhism has no separation between sexes but the Burmese culture does. I hope you don't find this comment hostile. My intentions are to just inform. Keep up the great work!

It's all about the country and how serious those traditions are, here in the U.S. we had a lot of traditions that stood for a long time, (not as long as buddhaism of course) and now you get in trouble at school if you wish someone a Merry Christmas.it's a political world, I wonder how long Burma will last.

I think you guys are misunderstanding that 'women are not allowed' part. Women are in fact allowed to go inside the temple you will see @ 1:55 there are women there. But women are just not allowed to go on top of the Buddha statue (the reason could be Buddha and monks are not meant to get too close). Hope that makes sense.

ah yes, lets deny women of access to worship and treat them as less holy because they will distract men and their "holy" process. of course no one should be doing anything inappropriate with monks. But why make "exclusive zones" for men near stupas? A man can drink alcohol and do all sorts of unholy things but somehow that still makes him holier than a devout woman?
@Withthekaze6 жыл бұрын
@@crewmatewillthrowthesehand7600 i don't know how to explain cuz my eng is weak..but i'll try my best. The thing is.. if men tried hard they can become buddha after like 4thousand centuries and 4 worlds destroyed which is women can't. That's how we define holy and less holy.( sorry if i typed somethings wrong)😃
