Just some Toro clarification. Its roughness is now extremely temperamental depending on the seat you sit in. Non wheeled seats are glass smooth but the front wheeled seats of the cars for some reason are painful AF on the turnaround. It also depends how many people are seated in your car. The more people, the smoother the ride. Edit: I’ve also seen families come off disagreeing on the roughness of the ride because two of them sat on a front wheeled seat and two on a non wheeled seat. It’s crazy how different the ride is between two rows that are adjacent to each other.

Might be worth keeping in mind: CF announced that all the additions they had planned for 2025 wouldn't be changing. I don't think that this year will be a good indicator of who the new SF's favorite parks are, since the 2025 additions will be things that were purchased before the merger.

I think the family coaster expansion is filling the gap that older coasters used to fill. An Arrow looper or suspended coaster or mine train weren't billed as family coasters when built because they were new or more intense than what came before. As those coasters reach their service lifetime and are removed, there's going to be demand for coasters with similar stats and height requirements, but the demand is coming from the family market, so the surge of bigger family coasters makes sense to fill that void

CGA is still getting some significant investment for a "dying" park. Complete facelift of Celebration Swings, a restoration of Carousel Columbia (3 year plan btw), renovation to diners around the park, and a full PLC upgrade to Flight Deck being conducted by IOE is nothing to sneeze at. Also, Prologis hasn't said anything of what they're going to *do*. Looking at the way they operate, it's literally just them being landlords and collecting rent. At that token, it then will come down to whether or not the chain wants to pay that rent, buy the land back at a possibly discounted rate depending on how things shape out, or sell it off to a different chain if anyone wants it. I'll sure as hell bet they're not gonna turn it into office space, just take one look up and down Great America Parkway and tell me how many empty office complexes you see (the number is in double digits)
@brianfoss571
@brianfoss571 4 ай бұрын
Keep in mind that Carousel Columbia happens to be the largest carousel in the world and (like Gurnee's) was built for the US Bicentennial. The rest of the park could be scrapped, but the city of Santa Clara would still try to preserve that attraction for its historic significance. As for Celebration Swings...it's literally just a wave swinger, man. We're not talking about Grizzly getting a few hundred feet of Titan track here. It's a small bit of TLC that keeps families coming a few more years and extends the ride's life if / when it's relocated. That's all it is. The fact remains that CGA has one of the oldest coaster lineups in the combined chain. 5 of its 9 coasters are more than 30 years old. It's not profitable to replace Flight Deck, Grizzly, Demon, and Patriot over the next 20 years, and CGA can't operate year-round like Knott's or Magic Mountain. I expect any flats that the new Six Flags isn't willing to relocate will be scattered around Gold Striker, with the northwest corner of the park remaining open as a spun-off large FEC.

And of course they're not going to turn it into office space. They'll build mixed-use housing & retail on any land they're able to develop.

Back when I was a kid, a major theme park like Hersheypark or a Six Flags could be viable with most of the headliners being what we'd call family rides, and there would be maybe two or three big thrill coasters. Today, that's Disney and maybe Universal, but during the Coaster War era, everyone in the other tiers moved way over to packing their parks with intense thrill rides and things have been kind of unbalanced ever since. There's often this gap between tiny kiddie coasters and the monsters, with a dearth of big significant family rides. I see this family-coaster trend as a way of restoring the balance.

What you were saying about the RMC tease being before the merger announcement. I would assume the manufacturers probably knew this was coming a long time ago. Thinking back to when I bought my CF platinum pass last year, Cedar fair announced right after that their pass tiers would be changing this year. I think that was in preparation for the merger, so I'm sure they've known they were going to do it for probably a year before that. And, if I were guessing, the manufacturers, having contacts inside the company, have known about this for almost as long as the companies themselves.

#8 might be best summed up by an interview from Dollywood on Big Bear Mountain. They were looking for a coaster that *grandparents could ride with their grandkids.* People are living longer, and the boomer / millennial "bulges" in the US population pyramid around 2000 have since smoothed out. With the internet boom, 1999 was definitely an ideal time to go gangbusters on big thrill coasters, with 30.5% of the population between ages 10-19 and 35-44. Today, that figure is around 26.0%, due in part to a larger 55+ cohort. Also, with lower birth rates, theme parks might be responding by giving more kids a *great* first impression of coasters. In even 10 years, their business might depend on a higher percentage of Alphas liking roller coasters than Millennials and Gen Z did at their age. For Holiday World, Good Gravy! isn't just about filling a gap in their lineup - it lets kids leapfrog over Howler to something they'll want to marathon until they're ready for Raven.

I think that the new Six Flags/Cedar Fair chain will merge operations more slowly than a lot of people are thinking they will (I've seen so many people asking if they're offering a joint pass for 2024, despite the merger not being official yet). Looking at the skip the line passes, when SF took over parks like Darien Lake and Frontier City, they didn't immediately implement the Flash Pass in 2019 (the first season under their management). As for which parks are the favorites, I don't see many massive shifts. The combo might be the best for Great America of all the parks, since they're definitely going to be a favored park (a popular park in a massive metro with effectively no competition), and Cedar Fair opens up numerous options for them. Like a Gravity Group redo of American Eagle.
@brianfoss571
@brianfoss571 4 ай бұрын
I'd rather see Gravity Group's EPT go on Viper than American Eagle. More likely they add a bit of Titan Track to AE and extend its life a few more years until they're ready to replace it.

I think the Sesame Place parks could get B&M family inverts in the same or back to back years. in Philly, it goes over the lake and the first half is a near clone of Dragonflier or Orkanen. In San Diego, either a more out and back style as a backdrop to the park on the south side (if you are in the wave pool, its to the right-be this the first drop or an overbank) or the China model in what I'm basically calling their boneyard. The former would probably be easier since you could just put a sound barrier behind the theater and it would be mostly fine, the other backs right up to houses so would be better used for an indoor attraction-although the Sesame Place parks are mostly water parks so dark rides have just never made much sense

1. Why is it the pre-fabricated Intamin wooden coasters (Colossos and El Toro specifically; not so sure about Balder & T-Express) have roughness/maintenance issues? Good idea but bad execution from Intamin? 2. After years of waiting for Primordial .... it just seems ehhh to me. 3. What the hell were they thinking with Desperado out in the middle of the desert? From what I've read, it was the last project that Ron Toomer designed and Alan Schilker was the engineer of it.
@TheBolligerMabillardLover
@TheBolligerMabillardLover 4 ай бұрын
Colossos is glass smooth after the rebuild from 2016-2019, almost to the point where it needs more airtime and more forces on the turns to make it a better and great ride, even though it is a good ride. I think intamin learned from Colossos when they built el toro and they made the drop steeper, the hills sharper producing more ejector airtime, more quick changes of direction and switchbacks, and tighter turns to produce more force and intensity and stronger laterals while keeping the ride as smooth as Colossos, at least prior to the derailments. Therefore el toro great, Colossos good, unless el toro is now as rough as some people say. I wouldn't know, I haven't ridden it since 2018 and it was still smooth then, but that was before the derailments.

I kinda feel that we are seeing a rise in the family coaster to create a new generation of coaster lovers. It's crazy to think that the era when Magnum XL-200 started this thing was over 30 years ago. Those kids who were in HS at the time developing an enthusiasm for coasters are probably in their late 40's-50's and are likely parents with softball back injuries. I truly wonder if they are doing this to create a new generation of enthusiasts before they unleash the new technologies and extreme records of the coaster world.

I’m hoping the merger means good things coming for Discovery Kingdom. My home park has had the same coasters for years. The animal areas have also been far less popular. I’d like to see the park either do away with the animal part, and build better coasters, or move the park to a place where they can expand. It’s completely landlocked in its current location, so no expansions can happen. The 150 foot height limit also means hypers and gigas can’t happen. Kong needs to be torn down, as well as Boomerang. Both are old and janky.

There is somewhat of a bright spot with CGA closing- CF/SF will have one park to focus in the Bay Area (massive population). Though there isn’t really any other competition in the region, I’m hoping they put money into SFDK to make it a better park, they have some solid coasters, but it feels like they need a major makeover (with what you’ve mentioned) hopefully this park gets some attention from this new mega chain.
@Spartan87667
@Spartan87667 4 ай бұрын
@@stephenroberts6826 I hope so. I quit going to this park because I’ve ridden all their coasters countless times, and it just doesn’t have the same appeal anymore. Most parks continue to make improvements and add new and exciting rides. This park’s height limit, and the former CEO’s strategy of going cheap, has held it back for a long time. RailBlazer could be a welcome addition, if CGA just gives it to SFDK.

Me neither. I’m so butthurt. The sad part is that in 15 years or so, the prototype will have been worked on and perfected, and we’ll see plenty of other launched lift hill coasters by then. RMC just rushed this one out and paid for it

The people who complain about TT2 to no end for “nerfing” the launch, yet give lightning rod a total pass for removing the best part of the ride are the ones that grind my gears to no end. And it proves why enthusiasts are so hypocritical

@@FameyFamous pretty much every coaster enthusiast is either looking the other way on Lightning Rod, or justifying the move by saying “it had to happen for reliability purposes”. I have no issue with that in itself, but then they complain endlessly about TT2 being horrible despite the ride now having 3 launches and going above 350 feet twice in the same ride (which no other ride does) Go check out the comment section of “why TT2 is bad” videos, as well as the ones for lightning Rod taking out its launch. You’ll see a vastly different picture painted in both, and it makes me shake my head at the hypocrisy

Im still real up in the air about this whole merger thing. I see a lot of people excited.. but, I just don't see how it's good for anybody. The lack of any (Real) competition historically has led companies to become complacent, and not add nearly as many new attractions. Given the size this company is going to be, they're literally going to have ZERO competition. Worst case scenario, Cedar Fair parks become like Six flags parks.. which would be a travesty. BEST case scenario, I think things just get stagnant, and you start seeing VERY little growth within about 5 years. We'll see... But, I don't look for this to improve anything besides MAYBE the old six flags parks may be operated a little better. That's about the only silver lining I can even KINDA see.
@AirtimeThrills
@AirtimeThrills 4 ай бұрын
I dont see how they'd have zero competition. Only about 4 of the parks have a direct competitor thats now on their side, and there's a bunch of other parks out there in more direct competition. Like for example, Kings Dominion still has to deal with BGW. Dorney with Hershey. SFMM/Knotts and Disneyland
@Frankenberry
@Frankenberry 4 ай бұрын
@@AirtimeThrills Yeah I understand that, but when you look at the size of the Busch Gardens/Sea World brand... and also really Herschend etc. , on a business level, theres just not gonna be much of a comparison financially speaking. Those companies are running a much smaller number of parks as opposed to what Six flags and Cedar fair were already. But when you put the two of them together... It's gonna dwarf any other chain. I've not done the math but I'm guessing probably 75 or 80 percent of the industry.. . and if you were to take out the big theme park chains of disney and Universal.. probably even more. Not globally, but in America particularly.. Now around the worlds a different story because CF/SF really doesn't have that big of a foot print globally.

But competition park to park isn't going to matter nearly as much to the company, when they'll own most of the parks that are in competition with each other
@AirtimeThrills
@AirtimeThrills 4 ай бұрын
@@Frankenberry these parks have very little geographic overlap. I'm just saying for the most part, these parks have the same competition they had before so they're going to need to keep pushing forward, and hopefully this means more capital to go around especially after their debt issues are behind them
