What to check on your car if you smell burning brakes

My 2006 Lexus 400h hybrid was down to 20.5 mpg. I thought it was the battery going. It had started pulling a little to the right a couple months back too. One night I backed into the garage and smelled brakes bad. I had just replaced the rotors and pads so it couldn’t be the brakes, right?. Well I burnt my fingers on one front and one rear wheel checking like you did. I decided to replace all 4 calipers. Now I’m back to 31mpg at 231,000 miles. This car runs like new again! Love these Japanese cars.

I have seen failed rubber brake hoses also cause this same issue. I'd replace the caliper and the rubber brake hose.

Did you flush the brake lines when you did the brake job? I like opening the bleeder so I don't push any "foreign" material back into the rubber line that can eat away like acidic oil that has moisture in the end that could have seeped in between the piston and das boot. Rubber line could have collapsed too. I feel like too many people don't change their brake fluid enough. And maybe it has been time the lines just coincidentally decided it wanted to go. Especially after the month break. Also something unrelated, you said "we" left so I am glad your wife could go and enjoy the Czechia countryside. Green is good for the soul.

I have to put it on the neutral right? to test if its moving freely. Do I have to change my brake fluid once I replace a new brake caliper? My fluid looks used engine oil it is dark.

You can easily rebuild the caliper yourself, it's not a big job.
