Thanks so much for sharing! I am also a business owner of 15 years - glass artist. I reached burnout about 5 years ago and totally lost my joy by doing my craft because I had built my business around pleasing others and doing what I thought my customers would like. I took a huge break and cut my business down to the bare minimum so that I could heal and figure out what went so wrong. By keeping things as simple as possible, I started feeling inspired again and I've kept the simplicity. I make only what I really love to make and have said no to the rest. I raised my prices and continued saying no to any projects that would leave me feeling tired. Now I am more successful than ever, and so happy. I work 30-40 hours per week on average now, instead of the close to 80 that I used to. I hope you can find a way to keep it more simple too. We aren't meant to work like society tells us. Love your videos, and my rigid heddle loom is one of my favorite things to play with when I'm relaxing in between work.

Kelly, I appreciate everything you do on this channel, so thank you! It is so clear to me that you work extremely hard. I would like to make a few observations/suggestions to try to help: 1. I think it would be very reasonable for you to take some time off as the Christmas holiday approaches. I have seen other KZbinrs take a month off when they are experiencing burn out. Your subscribers will wait for you and probably appreciate you even more. 2. I would love to see some unstructured videos of time spent in your yard and with your animals. I love these personal touches. 3. I absolutely would not feel obligated to respond to all comments/questions! That's just too much. 4. Build time into your daily schedule to put down that computer and read, take a walk, or just pet your dog. Be there for yourself. 5. Just know that you are greatly appreciated. We see beyond your wonderful work to the person you are. You need nurturing just as you nurture us. Thanks for all you do. Louisa Emmons

Hi Kelly, it was brave to make this video (without crying!?). As a self employed homeopath, I retired this year. I’m 20 years older than you….I can relate to all you say and scaled my work down for some years before stopping practising. A few thing that helped me in those years was to stop always giving free advice (!). I found some people sadly, rude and unappreciative. To work only a set number of days and ‘shut the door’ on my practice for the other days, no matter what. To get in touch with what gives *me* joy, both in work and personally, and to (only) follow those activities through. To take holidays away from home. After some years, I found I wanted to stop altogether and don’t regret it. Many people were dismayed and surprised as I’m considered, like you, to be so ‘nice’ and ready to overextend myself to help others. There comes a time when you need to help yourself. Perhaps you could step back and see if all your past work carries you through at least for a while. You have a huge online presence and may find you don’t need to do professionally, as much as you’re thinking for your business to continue to thrive. You may need to be firm with yourself, to move into a space of more personal joy…it’s a transition and can be a challenge. In return for all your good online weaving advice you have unknowingly given me, feel free to run past any further thoughts you have, by messenger. 💜

Hi Kelly. This is one of the most compelling videos I have watched in a while. I LOVE your classes (I'm a gold member) and occasionally I read the blog or watch some of the KZbin videos. However, I find that I skip many of them just because I too find my time limited. Weekly output of the sort you provide is just too frequent - primarily for you, but also for us (or at least me) in my opinion. I think it would be better to anticipate a new video from you in the coming weeks - in the sense that we anticipate Christmas presents or birthday gifts. Waiting for something makes it all the more exciting when we finally get it. You have done a great job of identifying changes for yourself. I would add that you may want to look at where you started in this journey (classes?) and what made you such a success in the first place. Perhaps focusing on the early days will allow you to clarify those things you want to keep in your business so you can allow some of the other things to be dismissed. I wish you all the best as you evolve through this. My heart to yours... Wendy S.

Hi Kelly, I just wanted to encourage you on your choice to create the boundaries you need in order to take better care of yourself. It's absolutely the right decision for any person feeling exhausted, and you certainly didn't even need to explain yourself. Your boss needs to relax her unrealistic expectations of you and appreciate the wonderful work you have already done. I want to thank you for all the free weaving guidance and inspiration you've provided on this channel. You've done plenty to help people explore and enjoy their own creativity - a huge gift to your subscribers. The process of menopause is not such a private matter if you consider that half the earth's population goes through it, and it makes a significant impact on the majority of them. You're right to want to slow down as much as you can to allow your body to adjust through it. But whatever the body's hormones are up to, burnout is a reality in this life where we need to chase money to survive. Enjoy the beach! And kudos to your husband for supporting you.

I understand completely I could have written this a few years ago,I spent my whole life being self employed , I am a member of your school and appreciate everything you say and do. Only one tip I can give you without writing an essay. Stop doing such detailed classes on you tube for free, even I thought twice about joining your school because you do so much for free. Maybe just taster videos. Look after yourself.

Thank you, Kelly, for sharing your thoughts and concerns with us. When I was your age, I thought it was a cruel trick of nature for us women to have menopause at the same time we have teenagers! I benefitted greatly from counselling to get through the burnout that lasted from about 45-60. You are doing what I should have done, stepping back from the hamster wheel! I applaud you and thank you again for all you have done for the craft. Such a talented woman you are! Do whatever you need to do and don't feel you have to explain it to anyone. Good luck!

Hi Kelly, First of all, thank you for your substantial contributions to KZbin content. Of all the weaving videos, yours are the ones I will consistently visit, knowing that your explanation will be clear and detailed enough to start a project (this coming from a novice rigid heddle weaver who has done Krokbragd and Overshot samplers!!). I am not on social media, so personally think cutting back on those activities is a solid place to start saving time. You are correct in that many people don't want to "do the work" to learn on their own, preferring a quick and easy answer. That's their problem not yours. Please by all means take time out every day to refresh yourself, be it with a walk on the beach or time devoted to your own projects. It will keep your content fresh. Go Girl!

I bought a rigid heddle loom this summer, and your content has been invaluable in terms of making it an enjoyable experience for me. I have always been surprised by and appreciative of your generosity: you offer a LOT of online content for free, and I wish I could say that I'm surprised that people take advantage of that and then behave like they're simply entitled to it all, but sadly, I'm not. I also watch a lot of knitting content, and most of those KZbin channels consist of exactly the kind of content that you mentioned that you enjoy producing: knitters chatting about the projects that they're working on and offering a more "casual" experience. They will occasionally offer a tutorial about a particular knitting skill that they use for a particular project or that they enjoyed mastering, but they do so sparingly. In general, they only put out 1 video every 2 weeks. I think if people can't manage to be polite when asking a question, you have no obligation to respond, and even if they *are* polite, I don't think you need to respond to each and every one, if it's not creating value for your business. I'm glad you're focusing on taking care of yourself: I admire your honesty and straightforwardness and I think it's what makes your approach to weaving so helpful and enjoyable. I hope you find peace and enjoyment again in the upcoming weeks!

Kelly, this was such a timely post. I cannot tell you how much I can identify with your current predicament. I am both a nurse anesthetist and a full-time academic in the US. I recently decided to scale back in my professional life so that I could devote more time to making art (and make time for myself!), after finally coming to terms with the fact that I am horribly burned out. I recently picked up a rigid heddle loom and have begun to watch your videos. They're so helpful. But this one spoke to me at the deepest level. You just reminded me that, whatever the endeavor, it's possible for things to get out of control, regarding our time and efforts. At a time that I need to set my own boundaries personally and professionally, you delivered some good advice for everyone. Thank you so much for sharing this!

hi Kelly! its sad to hear you're feeling the burnout. i've seen some youtubers recommend things like making sure you schedule one day a week that you're not allowing yourself to do work for your business. don't answer emails, don't film videos, just do things entirely for you one day a week. make sure its in your schedule. because your boss really should be giving you RDO's
@KellyCasanova
@KellyCasanova Жыл бұрын
I've tried to do that in the past, but now that the business is in a good place I may be able to try it again. I do have a rule that Sundays are not for work, but I do still answer emails as I feel Monday morning would be too overwhelming otherwise.

@@KellyCasanova i completely understand that. emails never stop coming no matter what day it is or what time it is. hopefully you can find a good balance between work and leisure. its not worth the burnout if its not allowing you the freedom that working for yourself is sold as being.

Hi Kelly, You are an amazing person and have brought me many hours of joy! And taught me lots about weaving. For the free content on you tube or any where on social media you owe us nothing ! I am 68 years old and remember the days of dial phones, party lines, and having to go to a library to look up information in the set of encyclopedias. To my children’s horror, I don’t answer my phone every time it rings or even carry it with me every where I go.. All the changes you mentioned sound wonderful to me. It sounds like you are taking back your life. I would appreciate unedited videos with you talking and weaving things that make you happy. You have a huge library of tutorials so people know your teaching skill and that you weaving school is a good value. You have an excellent reputation and are mentioned on other sites so you will not be forgotten if you back off on your out put. That hamster wheel can be brutal! I hope I have not come across as being to bossy because I want to encourage you to do what you think is right for you and your family.

Kelly-don’t feel bad. Perimenopause sucks-I’m going through it now at nearly 53. Burn-out sucks-I’ve been through it so many times myself over the years. I keep revisiting your old content because I keep finding things I missed because I didn’t have enough experience (even with how to do video casting-your work is an endless education for me!). Many of the other comments have offered wonderful advice and I might add that simply posting this video sounds like it has been a hugely important therapeutic first step. I have gone through a difficult time myself this year (for different reasons) and simply opening up a conversation, without shame and with openness, has been so crucial to shedding the mental burden and growing back to a more sustainable, healthy place.

Hi Kelly, Thank you for sharing your story and challenges. I also had a work from home business designing, making and selling bamboo tools for knitters and fiber artists for 10 years and found that I had no time for doing things that gave me joy away from my business. I chose to 'retire' and take a new direction, but that was very hard as I loved what I had created. I love the idea of you sharing your homesteading journey. I follow a few KZbin channels that do only that and even though I live an urban life I enjoy and am interested in that homesteading lifestyle. I see some people actually support themselves from KZbin by reaching a broader audience, so you might find you do not have to do so much content creation and can get out in nature more. And still provide videos and grow your channel. Most of all, be a better boss and give yourself the permission to set your own schedule to be able to nurture yourself first. Your family needs you to be your best. Kindest regards, Karen

Hello from South Texas by the Mexico border, Kelly. I love your patterns and tutorials. You once very graciously answered a question that I had for a paid pattern of yours. I was disappointed that my weaving wasn't turning out like yours. You gave me suggestions, and reassured me that it was turning out nice. I would certainly be willing to pay to have a question answered by an expert such as yourself. I feel it is only fair to be compensated for that time as well. On a personal note: A woman's body is a not a machine, and I am glad that you are listening to it to slow down and take some time to heal and recuperate. You are a sweetheart. And I will always be here to help support you wherever you end up. Happy holidays, Nora.

Just answer questions from people who bought classes or belong to your school! You could get moderators (people you know are knowledgeable) to answer other questions or suggest other resources. The menopause thing is a bust for a lot of us. Depression, anxiety and those panic attacks! Natural remedies, and a physician. My husband and daughter did an intervention: either I get help, or they would do “pillow therapy on me in the middle of the night.” Black cohosh and soy isoflavin(sp) took care of the peri menopause symptoms, later prescription anti depression/anxiety med. Later I learned to take a brisk walk everyday. It sounds like you are on the road to recovery. Just do only what is necessary for YOU! We love whatever you give us, and we will still be here waiting for you. Love yourself, love your family: you can’t be everything for everyone else. I wish you strength and happiness❤️

Kelly, I have to thank you so much! I have been following you for years, first with my rigid loom and now with my table loom and I can say that thanks to you I weave. Set limits for answering questions on email and media. Let's say an hour a day and not a minute more and as far as you go. Enjoy your day and activities outside. Make your own projects and if you feel like sharing it and if not, don't do it. I am happy paying in Teachable for your videos and teachings, people who value your work will have no problem paying too. Unfortunately, the Internet has led to the culture that everything has to be free and have new features continuously and it is not possible to maintain that pace. Un gran abrazo!

I owned a business for over 20 years. I hear so much of me in your story. Remember, you are separate from your business. Set boundaries. Second, I come here for you. That means you need to be at your best. Take a vacation. Do some self care. Learn to be less hard on yourself. As an instructor, you are not required to provide lifetime free assistance. It is hard, but it is just the facts. No one would expect that kind of service from any other professional. I know this will not be an easy step to take, but do it so that you can continue to express your creativity.

I'm nearly 70 and when I was in my 40's it was called "mid-life crisis" where a person starts to question what is important to them and what their life is all about. You've achieved milestones, such as finishing school, start working, get married, start businesses etc and have children all the while giving of yourself to so many facets that is you. You've reached a crossroad which is exciting and scary. Do what is right for you, it's time for you in whatever you choose moving forward. I wish you much happiness and contentment. Thank you for what you have done for the weaving community and you have left a legacy that we can enjoy for years to come. Best wishes ❤

Anyone who discovers the world of weaving discovers you, Kelly. You have so many recommendations in online groups, and people like me, newbies, who sre many, i think would never get through all your amazing videos ... Dont worry abou the hamster wheel, you have put so much out there for us all, your experience is so valuable, and i for one are so grateful, and your work is so appreciated. Don't feel like you have to continue producing material. You have done so much, and altruistically. You do an amazing job! You have put so much out there, we are all in debt to you, and i'm so sorry that this is weighing on you. I'm happy you're taking a step back and seeing where you have to make changes, for self-survival. Go for it. And don't worry about the nameless, ungracious comments that bombard you. I think nobody really expects a reply. But i understand that it gets to you and you want to respond to all. Focus on you. You're doing great!! And a huge thank you, from Bonnie, recent convert to the weaving world :) basically, what i wanted to say is you dont need to keep churning out new material, there will always be people who discover you newly, like me, and so the business shouldn't suffer. Take care of yourself, Kelly. And do what you need to do. We're behind you

Hi Kelly, thank you for sharing your personal struggles! You need to take care of yourself first and foremost! I found you on KZbin and became part of your weaving school a year ago! I love your teachings. If I were you I would end the email communications entirely. Have a way for your students to contact you regarding questions on your classes with stated days/hours that you will respond. Then you stick to that limitation. I belong to many knitting and crochet groups and they work similarly with no email communication. Most have FB community groups and if someone has a question they post in the Facebook group and one of the other members (usually many members) answer the question. Email will suck you dry! Your time is worth something. You are taking too much on your shoulders! We love you and your weaving school and want you to be healthy and well! Take care of yourself!

Kelly, I feel your pain.😢 I have been in similar circumstances, feeling completely overwhelmed, nothing I did was good enough, every day was a drudge. I got to the stage that it was nearly impossible to get out of bed each morning. I was suffering through menopause as well as being my own worst enemy. It is truly amazing how much the physical can negatively impact your mental perception of the world and your interactions. I needed to accept that I needed help, which was so hard to do. A trip to my doctor, honesty and acceptance of his advice was so healing. You have produced some amazingly complicated and in depth lessons that even a novice, like me, can see how draining it must be. It is great to see that you have some definite plans in place but I think you need to set aside some ‘Kelly’ time every day- exercise and meditation are key to recovery. We have a limited time on this Earth and priorities like family, health and faith are so important. Be kind to yourself! Small steps or changes can make a huge difference. I hope things turn around quickly because you a truly amazing person with a talent I am in awe of. Good luck my friend and I hope sharing has been cathartic and help people to have more realistic expectations. PS, I did check my video questions to make sure I didn’t add to your load. Love, Wendy

You can take them or leave them and/or take them again if you so choose. Guilt is fruitless & robs one of today! We were NOT created as doormats!! So rudeness is countered by setting up healthy boundaries no matter how awkward initially in practice which are absolutely necessary for one's healthy & vital well being. I have heard you & understand the stress of the situation yet I have great faith your choices will be for the good of all. Never forget the impact of your kindness, education & skill sharing in advancing the weaving community at large. It is enough it exists! Kelly, you know most of us of similar consequence support & appreciate you wholeheartedly & encourage your path to a more healthy, productive future filled with the greatest of happiness you have so richly deserved. Cheers to more holistic endeavors! ❤❤❤

Kelly, thank you so much for sharing this with us, I’m sure it must have been difficult. Please take the time you need. Enjoy time with your family, spend time doing the things you enjoy and get away from the stress as much as you can. We love you and appreciate all that you do for us. Will be praying for you, for wisdom to find what works best for you and what you need to let go, and to find that balance that allows enough “down” time for yourself and your family. Hugs!🥰

Kelly, you should read Company of One by Paul Jarvis. Bigger isn’t always better in business. Find the size of business that is going to be sustainable for you financially and energetically. Endless growth is not necessary. Take time to go to the beach. Take time for you (especially during peri menopause). You have a beautiful talent. Thank you for your interesting videos. 😊

My heart goes out to you.I know how hard it is for a private person to make such public announcements. Making your changes is not 'pulling back', it is your business evolving. I found your school through your channel and it was one of your early videos - the videos never go away, so they will still funnel new students through even if you never make another new video. You can't take care of anyone else unless you are taking care of yourself first - you can't pour from an empty cup. I'd like to recommend Nettle Tea and a visit to an herbalist for support from nature during this period of change. May I suggest that when you receive a message or email that is disrespectful, you respond the same way you would if the writer was standing in your shop speaking to you? Stay true to yourself, your vision and your values - you are not alone, ever. 👃

I decited to organise an hour a day for myself and bought a Spannung wheel. Lerning to spin my own yarn was so good for my body and soul that this saved me. After years I discovered weaving and learned so much from your videos that it made me happy again- especially in these "years"... I wish you all the best, Power and happy moments in these difficult time. Thank you so much for sharing your weaving knowledge with us beginners. You supported a generation of new weavers. You've been a huge inspiration to us! After watching your heddle loom videos, I built my own (Wanted to see if I actually like weaving before I spend the $ on a loom) heddle loom and loved it. After about a year and a half, took the plunge and bought a large 8 shaft folding table loom and now that winter has hit the farm, looking forward to spending these cold months learning all that it can do. And YES, once I have the craft room set up and can watch your classes while at the loom, I'll be enrolling in your classes! :) May even bite the bullet and buy a large heddle loom too (yea, I have the bug). Juggling can be hard, especially when your on a homestead/farm and trying to get all the things done which is why weaving for me is a fall/winter time thing, spring/summer is just to crazy to be able to sit down and spend more than a few minutes at the loom. Hang in there Kelly, take a break if you need to, we'll still be here!

I agree that it sounds very overwhelming all of the work that you do. You need to put yourself and your family first. You have so much wonderful content out there! So happy you went to the beach!! So awesome that you live close by. I also will be the one to say I don't have time for things so frivolous, because I am cleaning or getting ready for something, but it really is so important. I am 65 and have passed that perimenopause stage. Things will get better . All my love and best wishes to you. You take care of you. I love all of your classes and it will take me some time to get through all of them. You are a great teacher and I am enjoying your classes so much. Hi Kelly, I've only just caught up with your 'Burn Out' video, rather late to the party, so my apologies! Your honesty permeates all that you do, and it's most refreshing. Just know that there are thousands of people out there with similar problems, so you're certainly not alone. I had my own one-man business back in the 80s and 90s - before the days of computers and social media, thank goodness, otherwise I wouldn't have coped. However, I was constantly up against deadlines, clients who thought it was quite alright not to pay me within a reasonable period after successfully completing a project, and banks writing sarcastic letters (and charging me for them!) threatening to pull the plug on my business if I went over my meagre overdraft limit by even one pound because clients often paid so late. Add to that the fact that I was both father and 'mother' (my wife worked away a lot) to my then young children and you can begin to see that I had quiet moments of wanting to tear my own hair out. The only way I could sustain the juggling act was to work 18 hours every day, with never a day off or a holiday. It sounds crazy, but driving 10 miles to get fresh supplies for my business was actually like a break! All that came to a close when my then wife decided to run off with somebody else and I was forced financially to give up the business I'd worked 25 years in building up! I moved to the Netherlands and met a new love in my life, switched careers and now I'm retired and enjoy the new hobby of weaving (along with many others) that you introduced me to, so I'm extremely grateful to you. And now, there don't seem to be enough hours in the day for all my new interests. The bottom line is that you HAVE TO take time out for yourself, as nobody else will do it for you, and there's absolutely no shame in that! Your own health - mental and physical, is paramount! It sounds very much as if you have recognised the problems and found ways to try and deal with them. I genuinely wish you every success and hope that you can find that work-life balance that you so crave and deserve!

Hello, Kelly. I can't say I am surprised you have reached this point. I can only imagine the time and energy it takes to produce all the content that you do, plus the home schooling, household responsibilities, etc. It exhausts me thinking about it! Please do not feel the need to respond, but I have a few thoughts that may be of interest. I am not a doctor, but when you mentioned waking up tired after 8 to 9 hours of "sleep," it made me think of a couple of my friends who were eventually diagnosed with sleep apnea. Of course, there is also the time of life you are going through. I'm a bit ahead of you, but hot spells overnight definitely interrupt my sleep. I bought a set of cooling bamboo sheets that have been helpful. As someone who has a servant spirit and is a people pleaser with strong perfectionist tendencies, I can relate to your drive to keep doing and being exhausted. I saw a Facebook post not long ago that listed characteristics of someome with high-functioning anxiety. I ticked off every last one. I am considering seeing a counselor about this (should have done so long ago). Maybe look that up and see if it rings a bell. I will pray for you to find the path that is best for you and your family. Stress is horrible for our health. Take care of you. We want you to be well and will be here for you! Much love from the USA!

Dear Kelly, I'm so glad you shared how things really are for you now. As another self employed woman who experienced several crash landings voicing out loud what's going on inside is the start to making a change for the better. You've already started to look at your business model. I would suggest you also take a look at your health too as the kind of tiredness you describe maybe a symptom of underlying physiological changes due to prolonged stress. What I've learnt is that it takes both work and lifestyle changes to find a balance for oneself. You are a talented artist, a generous, caring person and a lynch pin in your family. Take the time you need to resource yourself for your future. If you were employed a good boss would be clocking the stresses you are experiencing particularly insomnia as this has been shown to have a massive impact on the ability to work and also finding ways to support your workload for example and maybe looking at a sabbatical. Regaining your resilience or mojo will come with making small changes on many fronts over time. No quick fixes I'm afraid! I really hope you can give yourself permission to change things for the better. With great appreciation for all you've shared, Novice weaver from UK x

If it were me, I would not answer ANY emails Except for people who are paying members or have purchased a class and are having trouble. I just know how people will definitely take advantage of someone like you who has been so kind and helpful to those of us who are wanna be weavers. Perimenopause and menopause is a hard enough time of life without all the other things you're trying to do. Those of us who have followed you for many years love you and your gentle spirit...don't feel one bit bad about slowing down, you deserve it! All the best to you and your family.

kelly, i'm relatively new to weaving but subscribed to your channel once i found it. your information, your 'free content', has been invaluable to me. i have always been a knitter and crocheter, but weaving offers such potential, and i am keenly bitten by the bug. i'm 20 years your senior, but recognise so much in what you have said that relates, almost mirror like, to my own experience. dont want to make this about me, but do have to say that i have found your videos of immense value, i return to them again and again, BUT, this has to be the best of them all. it is TRUE, it is HUMAN, it is YOU, and it is LOVE. that love that you have for your art, your students and followers, you really must turn that around and shine some of it onto yourself. i feel that i could type away here for days, so much to say. suffice it to say, love yourself, you are a VERY lovable woman. do at least one nice thing for yourself every day. sending you hugs, hugs, hugs and hopes for a creative and joyous solution to present itself to you.

Thanks for sharing and being transparent. 20 years older, a high-powered manager in a technical field....burnout is real. My main suggestion is time management related and location. Keep work in your studio only, and set alarms for activities...one hour to answer emails, for instance. Set time aside for gardening, homesteading just for you. Don't do anything weaving related outside your work hours. Sounds harsh but setting some constraints may help your creative juices after some time away. I love your utube videos that just give me insight as to what you are weaving. Maybe do tutorials once every other month? You do give a lot away for free, maybe you give teasers (in the what you are doing, but not how you are doing it), and point folks to new classes.

Dear Kelly, there is so much good advice and good will here to support you! You are an amazing person! You have been giving 1000% to your students, but, it’s not sustainable. You are so smart, you see and realize what you need to do to help yourself. This video is an important step. It was very brave of you! I hope you follow through on letting go of some of your less enjoyable self-imposed responsibilities. No guilt! My humble thoughts for you moving forward are these: Consider reducing the weekly messages you send out to once a month. Reduce the number of classes you put out yearly and stick with the rigid heddle if that is where your business is most successful. You still will be providing a great value for your prices, even if you reduce new content. Let members help and support members with questions. Maybe set up a “weavers help weavers” topic section and refer members there to have their questions answered. Finally, while it would be very interesting to hear about your homesteading projects, I don’t think making videos about it fits well with your desire to cut back on your work or to keep some parts of your life private. Share it on your blog for sure, but don’t add the extra expense and stress to your days. I am praying for you Kelly. Please take care of yourself.

Oh Kelly…breaks my heart to see you going through this. I also owned a business and reached burnout about 7 years ago. Made some major changes, which included ultimately selling the business, but then working much less. This change allowed me to find you…and weaving has brought me such joy. You should be working to live, not living to work. Develop boundaries and limitations ( at least one COMPLETE day away from the business per week, but you’d be allowed to weave for yourself). Maybe hire a part-time assistant ( maybe a student who you could mentor? ) who you can train to weed through the emails/questions and forward only the ones that they cannot handle. ( I’m sure many of the questions are repetitive). Take an hour every day to exercise/walk/yoga/etc. and make sure you work with your medical physician about managing the peri-menopause thing. It stinks, I know. Hugs to you from across the world.

Ideas: -The Handywoman woodworker announces weeks ahead that she’s closing her shop from mid-Nov until early Jan. You should shut down your social media & interactions for 4-6 weeks once or twice a year to refresh your spirit. I think you might be able to temporarily pause Facebook. You might still need to deal with subscription issues or try to hire a trustworthy person for limited hours a day or week to deal with business questions. -Hire a person to answer basic social media questions or direct them to FAQ pages. They can pass along questions only you can address & pass along a summary of general comments so you don’t need to respond to everything. Delegation is difficult but sometimes necessary for your health. Use some generic or canned responses or statements at the top of pages or emails that due to a high level of questions, you are unable to respond to every question. -Commit to a minimum of one hour daily of exercise (even just a leisurely walk) or nature contemplation. It’s essential. -Create a form with options that will direct the questions into automatic folders for you or an assistant to deal with more efficiently (some can be glanced at while others need more attention). For assistance with a pattern, state on the form that you are only able to answer questions about your patterns and in the form response, have a required box be the name of the pattern to weed out general weaving questions or other developers’ patterns. State on the form that you recommend specific books for general weaving questions unless it’s part of your basics class. -Set a reasonable # of videos or new classes for the year in January. Perhaps it’s one new class or video every 2 months. While I have purchased many of your classes, I don’t have time to watch everything either. -Try some of these ideas, give them time to work but if they don’t, you can always go back. -TAKE AN IMMEDIATE VACATION!

Thank you for sharing Kelly! I have a few suggestions- hope you find any of them helpful. If none of them are helpful, please at least take away that another anonymous audience member wishes you the best. Thoughts: Instead of answering all unpaid questions, do Ask Me Anything sessions in live chats, or compile a list of top questions to answer periodically in planned release content. Leave a link for un-paid audience questions and only go through those. Maybe consider hiring a social media/email assistant. Maybe hire an editor to compile magazines or books out of previously released content (with a decent lag). Turn self projects into vlog style content the same way you went from structured to unstructured homeschooling. Release behind the scenes material in patreon type pay tiering. I personally love watching and listening to homesteading, and more personal content feels more intimate. In a world where a lot of people rely on the internet for social connection, it definitely hits home and is monetizable (within reason for both the creator and the audience.) The difficult part of the self-employed model of work is that you have to take the time out of the revenue generating work in order to invest in yourself. So maybe those vlogs or table/floor loom videos don't generate as much income, but in the end *you* are the company. And by investing in your own sustainable working rhythm, you *are* investing in the revenue generating resource as well. It might cost a bit to hire an assistant, but it frees up your mental capacity to do other things which might help the business even more. You seem to be the type of person to want to give everything to the world so please continue to set limits on what you're able to give without doing damage to yourself. Please take care and have a lovely holiday season!

Keep deleting, and just know you have so much content out there that waiting longer between videos is totally fine. Hi, Kelly...we also homeschooled and did it in an 'unschooled' manner. What it taught us as parents and our children is how we work best, how we learn best, and allowed us all to focus where our interests were at the moment. There is immense value in being that in tune with yourself. You mentioned things not being sustainable as they are, and that resonates with me in particular, as I am having the 'not sustainable' talk with myself. Mine is related to the healthcare in the US refusing to treat me because I have a disability. It is simply unsustainable and has been going on for years to the point where I'm likely to die of medical neglect. And it is painful to have to face that reality, that if things don't change your life as you know it will implode, or in my case expire completely. And how do you come to terms with something like that? We all have that moment in life when we have to regroup and change course. It is one of the smartest things that we can do is recognize when something isn't working and make those necessary adjustments. Give yourself that time to breathe, to live life, to disconnect from the hamster wheel, get back to whatever it is that grounds you and what you enjoy. Takel the time to replenish yourself, and your next steps will be waiting for you when you are ready. But ONLY when you are ready, and only in a way that works FOR you instead of depletes you. 💚 All the best from Michigan, USA!

@@KellyCasanova Thank you, maybe somebody people with disabilities will be full citizens...if I have anything to do with it anyway. Weaving has been my outlet for creativity and accomplishment in the face of this unbelievable fight (all yarn arts, but weaving is the focus right now). It is my hiding place where the negative can't impact me, my refuge, my happy place, so to speak. Your reindeer overshot towels were one of the first projects I made and gifted; the little girl in that family has declared they are HER reindeer! I believe she even sings songs about her reindeer towel, it is enjoyed exactly that much. I hope you find your way back to enjoying your art...on your terms. The unschooling moment all over again! Enjoying the adventure instead of focusing on meeting anyone else's expectations. Always enjoy the adventure!! 💚

Thank you for all you do for us. It is appreciated. I felt honored that you trusted us to share a personal part of yourself, and, something which surprised me somewhat, it is understood by so many and we can share your mindset. Take care of yourself first and I believe the rest will fall in place. Take a vacation, read, lie on the beach in your bikini, do something that would be fun for you. Love and hugs to you. Nan

Hey gal, I understand. I've had a business of my own. I've been through a terrible menopause. I've burned out doing things I've loved. I'm here if you want to chat with someone in the US. I know you'll figure out what works best for you and your family. Hugs!

Do for you first. This should be enjoyable, not a chore. Yes, it might be work, but try to get your head back to the place where it is fun. It's hard. I know. But you're gonna get through this, and you'll feel better whatever you choose. Never feel guilty for taking care of yourself. If you're not you, then who are you? No, do what you need. You got this.

Estimada Kelly. 🥀

Hi Kelly. Thank you so much for sharing. I’m so sorry that you are so burnt out but it sounds like you have started the process to recovery. Sometimes that first start is the hardest! All of the steps that you are looking at taking are completely reasonable . You have been looking after us for so long and now it’s time for you to look after you. Those of us who value you and your business will still be here when you’re ready and able to pick it up again, and if you’re never able to make this much effort again then that’s ok too. You should be immensely proud of the mountains of content that you have created, and not feel guilty about stepping back. I am still slowly working my way through the gold membership and I am constantly amazed at the scope of your talent and desire to help others. Enjoy those books, relish the joy and creativity of your personal projects, take pleasure in walking your dogs at the beach, love spending time with your family and most of all love yourself. Take care our weaving friend.

Kelly, I really appreciate your openness. I have had my own business for the last 10 years and I have officially reached the burn out stage. I am taking a business break in December. I don’t know if it is a permanent break or temporary one but I realize that it is much needed. I pray you’re able to take a break and feel better health wise. You’re in my thoughts💕

Chrissy, I hope that your break is just what you need. Interestingly, as soon as I stepped back from the things that were weighing on me, I felt so much better that I have a fresh enthusiasm for the business side of things. I hope that happens for you too, or that you can make a decision to do what is best for you next. My advice would be to give it time, don't decide too hastily, just enjoy your break. Also, I'm very much thinking of ways to work smarter, not harder, so that the business is more sustainable without driving me into a real burnout.

@@KellyCasanova Thank you so much for the advice, I really appreciated it😊 I am looking forward to a break and making time to do more weaving which brings me a lot of joy and peace. I recently bought an older Macomber loom so I have a lot of learning to do too! I am so glad to hear that you are able to look at ways of working differently and giving yourself time to enjoy life too💕

Kelly I feel for you, I have been there and in fact I stepped away totally from the craft. Started a new craft because I couldn’t cope with the amount of work that my channel, blog and website took up from my old craft. I am so sad about it and haven’t been able to even make for myself. Take care of you, find out what you want and what you can do. I have just got into weaving and I dip in and out of your channel to give me ideas. Take care
