Randy Bachman is presently on tour as 'Bachman-Turner Overdrive' even though Fred Turner isn't there. Randy performs both BTO and Guess who songs. Until recently Kansas had two long time members, but I recall they introduced a new lead singer at their tenth anniversary show. Did that stop them from being Kansas anymore? And I saw their 50th anniversary show. It was phenomenal. And I love their newer music.

@@obbor4while Skynyrd is a great band, anyone not from Canada doesn’t realize the impact the Guess Who had all over the world. They were the first Canadian band to have a sing go to number 1 in the USA(American Woman/No Sugar Tonight) May 1970. No other Canadian band had done that yet. Then came Rush, Loverboy, BTO, Bryan Adams, etc.. Lots of American bands hit number 1 just because they are American. I love my country of Canada(not to fond of our PM though).

I drummed in a band that opened for these guys at an 800 capacity bar in Kent, Ohio in the 1980's. The drummer and bass player were the only original members. They were tight and the singer sounded like Cummings. We called them The Guess Who's Not. : )

I'd read that, back in the day when Donnie McDougall was the front man, there were efforts to "kinda" have him look and sound like BC. I do have the vinyl on which he and Kurt (and Jim) played, and I can also "kinda" hear him aping BC, but I'd sure love to hear some live material from back then, although it's unlikely to exist. I'd heard a similar tale to yours about a band in Philadelphia that opened for The Klones, featuring a female lead singer, and they expressed their dissatisfaction by performing a smoking version of "American Woman" before turning over the stage to Jim and the boys.

Actually the Guess Who were very much as band without Bachman as he left in 1970 and was replaced by Kurt Winter who co-wrote many great songs with Burton and was the lead guitarist. Kurt was the sole writer for “Hand Me Down World” and one of the finest songs the band ever recorded (and they had many gems) I know what you’re saying but please in fairness to the history of this group let’s not forget Kurt Winter who was a very important part of the band in 1970 and for quite a few years after that.

Grubbiest looking guitar player you might ever see but he could sure play! He also brought over the song "Hand Me Down World" which he and his band before joining the Guess Who wrote (the band "Brother"). Dominic Troiano (also deceased) was the best player the GW ever saw however. I would have loved to hear what else he and Cummings could have come up with. "Dirty" from the Flavours record is my all time favourite Guess Who song. I might be the only person on the planet to make that declaration...

Dominic was brilliant...not taking anything away from him and yeah I wish the Guess Who went on longer. My opinion and dare I say...a lot of us in Wpg had the honour of meeting Kurt RIP. I think the albums with Kurt are the Guess Who at their best. Regardless, the band was brilliant and deserves to be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame (yeah I know the RRHOF is a shame but for the fans). Canada Proud. The Great White North.

Back in 1968 and a few years on that band name The Guess Who was attributed to the songs that were getting airtime on the AM stations. With out the band name The Guess Who a musician (Pro, and I'm a Public Bus driver for 25 years now and not very often in the Supervisors office) would be lost in the Project Management woods trying to get stuff going up on the Billboard charts. Unless songs were made that got plenty of airtime. Besides that, if I was a Pro musician, I would like to share some Art/Music with all of them to get their opinion of stuff I made to record. 🎸🥁🎤

I'm not sure of all the members names but without Cummings and Bachman it's not the Guess Who in my opinion. This may not be popular but I actually preferred Bachman's other well known band BTO a bit better, both were great.

Michael , when i went to Spotify a few months ago , the thumb nail was a picture of the new line up. All the songs were listed from the original line up. They have a new album in the past few years. I think this diminishes the context of the Original band. The new line up are actually talented musicians . I think Rudy Saraso was even playing bass with them and he was on the Ozzy Albums with Randy Rhodes. The style of the New version is a bit more rock. A bit harder then the original hits. Im glad Burton is doing this. The Original Guess Who should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame .

I remember as a kid when I heard shakin all over!! I heard the guess who!! The fellas that were in are several line up changes! But Bachman/Cummings are the greatest works! I own a few of the 80-90s Jim kale and other albums! Not sure why bands don’t quit when original guys are gone??!! But from 1966-1975the guess who are still awesome!! Great work!! Excellent job!

there have been many renditions of the guess who , in 1981 there was jim cale and a friend of mine mike mckenna , that even put out an album called now and not then , but the cover had to be changed on the album , because of copywrite issues , i found an album with the original cover in a second hand record store . it didn't sound much like the guess who , other than jim cales voice , he used to sing more of the background vocals with the original guess who band . mike played slide guitar on this album , mike was a former member of Mckenna Mendelson Mainline in the late 60s , but there were other versions of the band , with other unknown members

@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine you can find a one track album of NOW AND NOT THEN on youtube , with a list of the players , it's a very rare album , and i found it years ago in a second hand record store in nanaimo british columbia. mike does some excellent slide work on HOME FIRES BURNING. it's worth a listen. mike was also in the ugly ducklings in the 60s , and luke and the apostles mid 60s yorkville , reunited with luke gibson in the 2000s as luke and the apostles , and also the mckenna gibson band , lots of youtube videos of live shows in toronto. one good album was mainline live@the elmo , excellent album , one of the best albums for a live , produced by the elmocambo , under the neon palms , toronto , god i miss the live shows there, rolling stones played here , everybody played here , some of the best live music i've seen in my life , and a great place to grow up in the 70s , showing my support for my friends bands.

I was the production manager of a festival in 2012 and somehow the American version of the Guess who !? was booked , I must say after the 3d song people were trying to get a refund and I must say they were right, Peterson was a no show so the band on stage was a over paid COVER BAND not the Guess who ! I hope Burton hammers these FAKES !

The current version of The Guess Who has 2 CANADIAN MEMBERS so your first sentence is a lie right off the bat. Doesn't matter where the band members are from anyways. Is there a law that all members need to be Canadian? LOL Next, the current band is NOT a cover band. Cover bands perform songs originally recorded by a variety of artists, but The Guess Who only performs Guess Who songs. Also, cover bands have completely different names which are different from the bands that originally recorded the music. Burton Cummings must be a FAKE too because he is not an original member of The Guess Who.

I’m going to point out that BC wasn’t even a band member until their fourth album. And Bachman is an egotistical jerk. My cousin did security for one of his shows in the 80s. After the show he tried to insist my cousin go get him a beer. My cousin flatly told him no, as security it wasn’t part of his job. Bachman then said, ‘I’m Randy Bachman, get me a beer!’. At that point my cousin told him, ‘I don’t care who the fuck you are, it’s not my job to get your beer. If you want one get off your ass and get it.’ Bachman shut up fast. And the new album, as with the last one are actually pretty damn good. It’s a different sound, sure. But they’re both totally solid records.

Randy Bachman is currently touring with his son Tal as Bachman-Turner Overdrive, the rest of the band members were hired by Randy, he is the only original member now that both Robbie and Tim Bachman have passed away and Fred Turner retired from touring in 2018. Shouldn't Randy call the band Bachman & Bachman instead of Bachman-Turner Overdrive?

I'm Canadian and a massive Guess Who fan. My favourite Canadian band of all time. I side with Burton. There is no Guess Who without him. Randy Bachman and the late Kurt Winter were also incredibly important to the band.

Our state fair recently announced "The Guess Who" will perform this summer as a big stage guest. Their radio ads blatantly announce for people to come see the group that had all the hits when most of the band wasn't even born when those hits were written and performed.

The real damn shame about this story is that the touring band has produced an incredible album, "Plein D'Amour", which is one of the best new rock albums I've heard in years. Believe me - I agree with your argument, but man... what a shame. Frankly if I were to attend a concert of the current lineup, I'd rather hear them play the album they recorded. But because they're using the Guess Who name I think I'd be surrounded with disappointed "fans" ("fans" in quotes because real fans would know this isn't the band that made the hits). I really wish they'd released "Plein D'Amour" under a different name.

The old cargo ship is carrying valuable merchandise that John Q Public wants to consume. The problem is that the old cargo ship isn't what it use to be. Some of the boards have become damaged from years of service and need to be replaced. The once shiny new rudder is now rusted. The sails have become weather beaten and torn. So are we to just dock the old cargo ship with the valuable merchandise inside, never to be seen or heard, or, do we replace the worn sails, rusted rudder, weather beaten boards and put on a new coat of paint so that John Q Public is able to receive the valuable merchandise?

I listened to a recent radio interview (put on tv) between a Winnipeg radio guy and Burton Cummings. According to Burton, the crux of this dispute seems to be that the current lineup calling themselves the "Guess Who" were not interested in paying some kind of licenced performance fees for playing GW's classic songs. Co-founding member and drummer, Gary Peterson got little if any writing credits for this material and the others were barely alive when the last of the hits came about. The radio host asked Burton if he had a problem with Lenny Kravitz performing his own styled version of classic hit "American Woman". Burton emphatically stated he had no problem with that. I think it was presumed that Lenny had made some kind of deal to record and perform his own version of the song. It makes sense to me that there is more to a catalogue of songs than a band name and thus I'm in favour of BC's efforts to stop a band of musicians from taking credit for something they had nothing to do with. Legally they may have the right to tour under the billing of the 'Guess Who' though ethically I don't see it. But even if you can't stop the name exploitation, you should at least be able to stop opportunists from performing songs that they are freeloading off of.

Hi Michael- Love your video on this. I got excited when I saw recently that they were lined-up to play at the Brown Co. Arts Center here in Indiana. After some research though, I discovered Burton Cummings wasn't even with them and neither was Randy Bachman. How do you sing and perform their bigs hits without Cummings/Bachman? Especially, since Cummings wrote those great hit songs . . . . .anyway . . . . .thanks for the in-depth review and warning . . . . I'll stay away, save my money, and just play their old records. Surprised the band name was not trade marked by the band. I would have thought all bands ensure the band name is not co-opted by someone else. Moby Grape was a band which didn't trade mark their name. Their manager asked if he can trade mark the name. The band, for some unknown reason, allowed their manager to have rights to the name. This prevented the band from playing under Moby Grape name after there initial breakup.

This has been a pet peeve of Burton's for a long time. What lead to it this time was a promoter for one of their shows used the original recordings along with Burton's likeness. Doing this is certainly going to cause Burton to lose part of his income, but he said he doesn't care. He's trying to maintain the bands history.

Honestly, I think the band has been touring as The Guess Who as long as I can remember after first Randy Bachman and then Burton Cummings left the band. Bachman went on to even bigger success with the Bachman-Turner Overdrive (and honestly, I always thought of Kurt Winter as their most important guitarist, although Domenic Troiano had amazing technique), and Cummings solo career never got off the ground anywhere except in Canada. Honestly, I've never heard of any songwriter stopping a band from playing their songs, including bands that are notoriously copyright fanatics like Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and Robert Fripp. It makes Cummings sound petty and vindictive. I saw a recent video of The Guess Who performing "American Woman" and they sounded pretty good and were playing at a venue that many aging bands perform at, all with lineups that barely resemble their original selves.

Thanks Michael on your great comments about the fake and real Guess Who. The Guess Who were one of my favourite bands from the sixties and early seventies(67-74). When Bachman left ( I believe ) their standard improved with the late Kurt Winter and Greg Leskiw on Guitars. Nevertheless the final version from The Power In The Music ' album Had only Cummings and Petterson (drums). To set up a new Guess Who without Burton Cummings is dishonest, as he wrote or cowrote most of the bands original material. I have heard the fake Guess Who and they sound okay, but they're not the Guess Who and shouldn't call themselves as such. I have been to many of Burton Cummings concerts over the years and have many of his albums(my favourite being 'Above The Ground') and believe his move is necessary to stop present and future musical fakers from claiming legacies they did not establish or create.

Context is important. When Kale formed his version of The Guess Who, Cummings and Bachman weren't even speaking to each other. It appeared there would be no way the classic line-up would ever get back together to play. That left a void for people who wanted to hear those songs live and/or remembered the band's name. Early versions of Kale's touring/recording band would include (at various times) several former members of The Guess Who (including himself, Peterson and guitarists Kurt Winter & Donnie McDougal). The band that currently tours under The Guess Who name has none of them (although last year, they released a single that features Peterson back on the drum stool). Cummings is no saint and has been characterized as difficult to work with. He dominated the band after Bachman left (or was fired). On the other hand, Kale's struggles with alcohol came to a head when he passed out during the second show of the LIVE AT THE PARAMONT concerts. He would be replaced by fellow Winnipegger (and former bandmate of Winter) Bill Wallace. The animosity between Kale and Cummings is legendary. While the original band reunited (at the request of their home province), Kale subsequently refused to tour. Replacement bassist Bill Wallace returned to honour the tour and is featured on a live reunion video plus several reunion albums (e.g. RUNNING BACK THROUGH CANADA). Keep in mind that Cummings and Bachman have (separately and together) toured and recorded songs by The Guess Who for years. Everyone has used those classic songs for their own ends. As with the CCR saga, personality clashes and unfair business dealings have created an ugly situation for all involved. Once Cummings and Bachman resolve this legal issue, the 'fake Guess Who' will only be a footnote in their legacy.

And they sign the contract which includes promotions. So, the band is responsible to 3rd parties damaged by a breach of that contract. The buck stops there, but they arrogantly ignored it. And they ignored the cease & desist letters sent to them as part of the Bachman/Cummings lawsuit! So here they are! Now no one wants the fake cover band!
