Bury Cemetery

Bury Cemetery first opened May 21st 1869. The chapel, gates and boundary wall are grade 2 listed.
The site is home to more than 140 war graves and a war memorial just past the main entrance for those who fought in WW1.
The site originally contained three chapels; Church of England, Roman Catholic and Dissenters.
The site is home to John Hall Mayor of Bury 1894-1896, who died September 11th 1901.
The site is also home to those who have been re-interred here. Three re-internments have taken place in bury cemetery.
The first was from Brunswick Methodist Church which closed in 1967. The original graveyard is now covered by Woodfield's retail park in bury centre, some but not all of the graves were marked with yellow crosses to be moved the rest sit below the retail park. A memorial garden was put in the carpark in 1997 in memory of those still buried below the carpark.
The second re-internment was from Union Street Chapel in Bury centre. Not a lot is known about this chapel aside from that it was demolished in 1999. The graves of those buried were re-interned at Bury Cemetery.
The third re-internment to take place was from Wesleyan Methodist Church in Cheetham Hill. When the cemetery fell into disrepair and vandalism was big, the council closed the cemetery and eventually sold the land for a retail park to be built. The remains of over 20,000 people were re-interred at Bury Cemetery in 2003.
