I love his optimism when he says buses in London come every 8 minutes. From my experience, both central and outer London, sometimes they come once in half an hour, and sometimes 3 come in 5 minutes.

the general public do not understand what it takes and what it involves to be a bus driver in London. I started on the routemasters on the 13 route out of Golders Green to Aldwych that was a big learning curve, from there onto the 114 service Mill Hill to Ruislip one man job, then moved companies to drive the 205 route Paddington to Mile End, totally different kettle of fish here, but more enjoyable maybe you you get addicted to the rush

Hi again, I am very entertained by your videos. As I have mentioned elsewhere on your videos, I drove in London from 83 to 04. Then came to Canada and have driven in various city bus systems and now I am at a city in the Province of Alberta, Canada. Driver change over here is...all doors open, driver remains in seat until bus loaded with fresh passengers, driver exits seat whilst new driver checks exterior then takes up seat and enters details into the electronic equipment. POLICY HERE IS THAT WE HAVE TO DO THIS WHILST PASSENGERS ARE ALLOWED TO BOARD/ALIGHT make travel enquiries, complain, whine etc. etc. Also if the driver whilst working is off the bus for example...for a pee or buy a coffee...whether on the road or at a bus station...there is an OPEN DOOR policy...so a great opportunity for fare evaders to board. Also we are NOT allowed to check for any of that when we get back in the bus! Hurray for property tax payers, eh! lol

Last year I was on the 149 going towards london bridge at Tottenham. The driver was waiting for the other driver to changeover. He waited 10mins the other driver didn't turn up, so he had to terminate at Tottenham town hall and went back to the garage.

passengers needed to see this in general. for example when im gettting relieved i need ample time to tell my relief if anything is wrong with the bus but passengers dont look at it like that instead we get bumb rushed thats the wrong time when im trying to go home.

The 185 southbound driver changover must be slightly frustrating when you do it with at least 20 passengers waiting to get on at a busy stop. Northbound doesn't seem too bad as regulars will wait in Camberwell New Road for the 36 to Victoria. The 185 must be busier since the 436 was diverted to Battersea Park?

And so they should, considering headway's are around 1 minute on the 25. 2-3 minutes is normal in most circumstances, in this case with a very high frequency route like the 25 they should have transferred to the bus behind.

fortunately, where I live driver changes don't happen mid-route (if they do then it is very very very very very rare). Bus drivers at my local depot often have a bus for the whole day, or when the swap it is done either at the depot or at the station (all the routes go to Porirua Station).

I found it interesting what you said about "even gap" in the service. The buses in my area are instructed to keep to schedule even if the bus before is very late, This does very occasionally lead to 2 buses at once going the same route and direction. If this happens, there is normally a high volume of passengers so the buses will 'leapfrog' each other at stops.

mattkaythetimelord it might be a low frequency service as opposed to a 8-10 min service? as far as I know low frequency service are only allowed to run on their own scheduled time no matter what happens to the bus infront or behind.

mattkaythetimelord well in london you have 2 different kinds of route. A Low frequency. So this could be every 20 mins. This is a timetabled route. So when we drive these bus routes its about getting to the stops within that time frame. No more than 2 mins early. If a driver on a low frquency like this one gets there lets say 4 mins early and drives off the company wont get payed for that bus by Tfl. This is how companies get find by Tfl Then we have High frequency bus routes. These can be lets say every 8-10 mins so its all about head ways and not as the above wich is timetabled. So lets say im driving down the road and im starting to catch up to the bus in front. Our controllers on IBUS Will either send us a text or call us direct and ask us to hold at this bus stop for lets say 3 or sometimes in my experience 5 mins. This is to do with letting a gap build up between me and the bus in front. The more even gaps on a route the more money Tfl pay the company and less fines to the company. Now the problem with this headway bussiness is that if you are a customer with an appointment somewhere or me as the driver wanting to finnish on time. We are now stuffed as i as a driver have to listen to controller instructions and we both end up late. Plus if i as a driver ignore every message and keep on driving a Report by our controllers will go to the manager for me failing to follow instructions. This could lead to a warning or diserplinary action deppending on how often i do ignore contoller instructions. This then can lead to me losing my job. And no one wants to lose there job. I hope this clears up and helps understand things better! ☺

All our routes except for two routes do the driver changeover at the station (the two routes that don’t do the changeover right outside the depot cause they have stops there) most people get impatient and just walk off or moan even though it takes like 2 mins or less most the time except for today when the ticket machine broke 😂🤦‍♂️ on the old darts we have

some company's use a aftermarket key which like plug, it fits in a small 3 pin connector located on the dashboard, its use in combination with the buses switches, where some bus company's have fitted an hidden switch to allow power to ignition switch

Hi Arron, But surely in 2019, there would be a bus condition report on a tablet computer owned by the driver before he starts work, or one that he can see at the deport, information provided by you, the driver before you finish your shift? - that’s if there’s time to speak to iBus to log this for the bus operator. As for logging your start of a new change over into a ticket machine, that’s stupid in the modern age, as there should have been a dramatic redesign of those machines, by inserting a cartridge with all those details provided by the new driver, you remove yours, he/she inserts his/preloaded with all the relevant details.

The i don't understand the point of a log card ibus keeps track of the bus times etc but I'm told it acts as clock in card its how we are paid per trips combined with time on the bus but your right its time for an upgrade

When I was living in London, I once took the bus to my destination (I think it was the 25 to Oxford Circus), and the driver was supposed to change at some point, but the one that would replace the one driving, refused to replace him. So all the passengers had to get off that bus and take the next one. What could possibly cause that? P.S : Keep making these amazing videos!!

Could be a number of things, most likely the driver that was to take over probably saw a fault and the bus had to RTB

How do you check all the tyres and lights within that 2 mins ? Surely your given time to do a vehicle check as per your CPC ?

mat2090 only the first driver has to do a vehicle check. if the driver has done the checks the next driver will not need to.

mat2090 the previous driver is responsible for letting the next driver know of any faults or changes to the vehicle. his checks cover the vehicle for the remainder of the day aslong as it is not left unattended. No driver taking over will be doing the 10 minute vehicle check. The time tables and company dont allow time for it.

Smoke Nandos depends where the depot is, if it's the nearest distance from the garage then they will change there... or if the depot is nearest to the terminus then they'll just change there.!

I would like to know why are bus drivers fined if they are running early, I mean why do the bus inspectors deliberately delay the bus drivers because they are running early. I've had arguments with bus inspectors because of this. Some passengers have appointments to attend to and do not appreciate being late for an appointment because a bus inspector decides to delay a bus due to the driver running early. It's bad enough when trains are delayed or cancelled, why should passengers put up with buses being late, the U.K. has I believe, the most expensive bus and train fares in Europe and every year the fares keep going up and up, so why should we put up with a crap service.

DIONNE FRANCIS-BROWN You've also got to think about your colleagues (the busses behind)... they will get absolutely hammered with the combination of their passengers and the passengers you were suppose to take that missed your bus because you were running early. Hammered is a term we use when our busses get absolutely packed to the brink.
