"Electricity is on our Side" by BUSDRIVER
Pre-order the album here: busdriver.lnk....
release date: TBA
lyrics to the head:
I am calling out your name
in the dark as the wind swept
I think that we could inherit carats of gold, that have not been found yet
‘Cuz your a testament of God
Shaking the skies until there’s no thunder left
Peep game though
Keep all them griots outside of the poorhouse
The lifeblood is flowing in lanes of the tour route
I am calling out your name
Know that I mean it
I am calling to tell that this all is ours
And if we make a plan, we can take
All the lands and the dreams that they ever have stolen from us
Then remake
A new world in a self image that is true and robust
I am calling out your name so just answer me,
I want your mind to be free.
Temporary Whatever

He's reading two books by Bob Kaufman: Solitudes Crowded with Loneliness and The Ancient Rain. Kaufman was an African-American poet in California in the 50s & 60s, part of the Beat Generation and the San Francisco Renaissance, friends with Kerouac and Ginsberg and all those cats. He was known for causing wild scenes, being arrested repeatedly, and improvising almost all of his poetry. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Kaufman

I've been listening to this track alot recently (Busdriver is in my top 5, how could I not?) and I just realized that there isn't that much Jazz Rap like this that is more Jazz than Hip Hop and I wonder why. Maybe since Jazz is gaining relevance due to the resurgence of Jazz Rap as well as acts like Kamasi Washington and the totally awesome and innovative London Jazz scene at the moment, this style might become more common in the coming years. I could totally see Chance the Rapper, Childish Gambino or even Kanye West introducing something like this to the mainstream. The only track like this that I can think of that has gotten any mainstream recognition is Kendrick Lamar's "For Free?" off of "To Pimp a Butterfly". Just my random thoughts on the matter. Busdriver miles ahead of the curb as always.

Check out FFs Inner City Griots and To Whom It May Concern and the Project Blowed compilation for the early roots of this sound if you're not already familiar.
