BUSH CAMPING & PACKRAFTING in the BACKCOUNTRY of JOKKMOKK, Sweden's Alaska

A packraft and bush camping trip in the backcountry of Jokkmokk in the end of August. Matti and our border collie Annie and our friends Melli and Micke took tree packrafts and went camping in the real outback of Jokkmokk where more animals than humans go. So many people who have visited Alaska says that Jokkmokk is like a small Alaska and we think it is, especially in wild backcountry bush areas like this.
During 3 days we travelled from the Pearl River water system over the watershed to the next water system, a small creek that in lower terrain become the river Appoälven.
Except from lovely paddling, wild camping, cozy campfires, fishing and tasty outdoor cooking they also got invaded by ants and Annie came up with some smelly surprises…

Kul att du tittat Nisse! Dessa båtar, packrafts är mycket mindre än kajaker och väldigt stabila och jätteroliga att paddla. Dock ska de användas på strömmande vatten eftersom de flyter så högt att de är tungpaddlade på sjöar. /Stina & Matti

That's fun that so much things are more or less global. 😀 In Sweden we also call it beard lichen but it's not correct. There is a special one that is actually beard lichen and that's yello-green with a different structure. 😀 /Matti

Matti, is there anything that you can do to stop the ants? I took my partner camping in the Saint Anna Archipelago this year and he freaked out over the amount of ants and didn’t want to pitch our tent, some kind local let us sleep In their garden with the murder slugs instead ! 😂 I want to come back so bad (I’m from and live in the uk) but he’s not so keen because of the ants! Can they bite/hurt you? P.s. I’m addicted to your videos, keep up the good work guys!

Thanks. Ants... sometimes it's enough to just move the tent 10 meters. And as long as you keep the tent closed nothing will come into the inner tent. St Annas... I think the ticks is a bigger problem at that place. 😉 We will continue making videos as long as we have the possibility to priority time for this. 😀 /Matti

In most of southern Sweden, afaik including St Anna and the rest of the archipelago, the ticks may spread TBE too. Look into vaccination (three doses spread over almost a year before full protection sets in, at least with the vaccine we can get in Sweden, but as always talk to your local professionals) if that worries you!

I often let my dog lead because she is good at finding animal trails and they are often easier to walk. About dogs getting used to carrying things, yes they really do, I watched my dog today carrying a big stick in the forest avoiding trees and bushes by turning her head left and right, it was amazing to watch how good she was at judging the distances. poor ants, how will they ever find their family again. Some dogs love to roll in whatever shit they find some dogs don't my last dog was excellent in finding dead corpses and other shit my current dog doesn't ☺, but I know how it is so I felt sorry for you.
