Good vid, and good tips. I was never really shown how to use a knife until I was around 11 when I joined the Scouts. I use knives, axes, saws most days, as a gardener, so I am always safe. There is a lot of people out there who are not though. I hope they see this vid. All the best.👍🏾🇬🇧😉⛺️

Thanks. The 360 space test is a must. Knife-handling beginners are unaware of their safety space requirements. So often we can get caught up in concentrating on a small point that we don't see the whole picture. Be Well and Good Journey. Richie

Good subject Becky. When I was a kid, I bought penknives and sheath knives from the age of 8 to 10 and we had no training or advice given to us. Sufficed to say, we had the odd few accidents and none of which were pleasant. We found out the hard way and those accidents could have been easily avoided with some knowledge of how to handle a tool properly while using them. You're a great embassador for young people getting into bushcraft. I've even watched videos of some familiar bushcraftets on KZbin and Facebook that have had accidents and they weren't youngsters either. Some great tips and techniques shown here

Great tips Becky, although I'm more a hiker/camper than bushcrafter I've been trying to learn a few basics like shelter and fire making just in case. I use knives a lot in my day job for wire stripping and cable making and still cut myself frequently when not paying enough attention! Just got a Mora Companion on order and going to be trying making feather sticks, saw the knee lock method on Hidden Valley Bushcraft's channel so going to give that a go.

The chest lever is done wrong IMHO. This grip is about to use the power out of the chest not only locking the knife to it. Try to think about holding knife and material when exhaled and then inhale. The opening of your chest while inhaling is doing the work. ;) 2nd advice...when working with a knife towards your body try to lock you elbow slightly above your hip and move the material not that much the knife or just use the knife with the help of wrist movement....as you said, better safe then sorry ;)

I've been using knives over 40+ years. And i cut my self an year ago bretty bad. 3 stiches to my fore finger. And the reason was that I was tired and careless. I had, and every one should have, first aid kit with me. It was a trip to hospital. I still have a problem with feeling with that finger. I hit a nerve... My point is. Even if you have experience. ALWAYS CARRY A FIRST AID KIT with you when using sharp tools like knives, axes and saws. I rest my case. Happy and safe camping every one 😀

Vigilant attention while using sharp items is always a good practice... I my area, a couple of years ago, a gentleman that had been flint napping for decades, cut the inside of his thigh and died. Don't be afraid/paranoid, As an overly cautious approach can also be dangerous, but do be safe.

You’re left handed aswell or maybe ambidextrous? Where’d you get the knife? or is the sheath custom? I may be too sleep deprived to comprehend, but I believe that was left handed oriented and you hold the knife in your left hand from the first minute’s I’ve watched so far. I find if a hassle to find something that can easily be pulled out by my dominant hand

I agree completely. Whether it be a knife or a gun or an ax or a saw all of these are just tools to get certain jobs done. But in the wrong hands they can be used in bad ways. Sometimes criminals make things a lot harder and honest law biting people by using these tools in bad ways. I’ve learned in life that it’s never a good idea to blame the tool just the person who is wielding it. Please be safe. God bless you all and your families. Duane

I have to add a quick story .. My brother is the most ACCIDENT PRONE human on Earth with a blade....Bar None ! We literally carry "quick clot" powder in our woods bags... Example: He had just gotten an incredible Bowie Styled knife that was either a BarkRiver or a Falkniven , (Cant remember) but he went to chop a small branch and the knife easily did so. But it also slipped from his grasp and stood straight up in the top of his foot.. penetrating top of boot,,foot , bottom of boot and an inch of topsoil... So be careful folks had that hit his inner thigh it would have ended him on the spot. Pay good attention to this young lady, she speaks truth.

It was interesting getting his foot out of his boot with a 9 inch blade stuck through both.. A bunch of stitches and a few months walking with a cane and he was ok.... But did he learn anything from it ?? I doubt it... But ,, he's my Brother,, I gotta love him in spite of his weirdness...even at 60 years old he is still a kid..

@@firestorm8471 That reminds me of the game mumblypeg we used to play at around 12 y/o here in GA. (61 now) You hold your opposite earlobe and stick whatever knife is agreed upon through that triangle of your arm and throw it into the earth. It has to stick. (I know, not really knife safety lol) At any rate, one day, we selected a ww1 bayonet to use. My friend put it right through his bare foot. We didn't wear shoes in the summer much if we could help it. Fun day! As a kid who played in the woods, I cut myself many times.
