That mushroom looked very dodgy. The annulus on the stipe and the fraying at the ground suggesting a possible bulbous form just at or below the surface are both traits of the amanita family. It's white, so a destroying angel possibly? Good call on leaving it alone anyway. And cheers for your videos, just found your channel this week and it's great!

Based on the few details caught by the camera and my little knoledge I assume it's either Amanita Phalloides (most toxic mushroom) or Amanita citrina. Both are highly toxic.

Great video, good skills. Next time you go take a 12ft. piece of 1in. nylon strap tied into a loop for collecting wood. Lay it down open lay wood across when you get a load fold and slip one side of the loop through the other. Makes for less trips.

As for mushrooms, I wouldn't chance it either. I did find some giant puffballs on a walk with my wife late August. We sliced them up into slivers and fried them in butter. The result was like scrambled eggs, very delicious and filling!

Scouts tongue is going a mile a minute. As with respect to mushrooms, one should always be careful. You really need to know your stuff. One bad mushroom equals dhiarhea which leads to dehydration. Dehydration in the woods is not good. Thank you for the video

Not for nothing (and I didn't think of this, myself), but you could flatten the top of that axe with the sharpening stone to strike the ferro rod with. I always forget that you can use the edge to strike a ferro rod & it's a good thing to remember (sometimes you think a knife or something is a bad idea because you figure you wouldn't be able to strike a ferro rod with it).

I stay away from most mushrooms for good reasons, but the mushroom you found at the beginning of the video I believe to be a false death cap, I wish I could've seen the top of it. But from what the underside, the stem, and the fat roll looks like it was a false death cap. I have heard it to be edible, but as for processing it I am not sure. Cool find. Love the video's!

Joe, thanks for bringing us along and teaching. I'm really enjoying your channel. As for the basswood, is it a really light wood? I ran across a similar tree that made great tinder just as you show from the inner bark, but I couldn't identify it since it was dead and had no leaves. The wood was really light, almost like balsa wood and took a flame well after the tinder ignited. Thanks again for the time to shoot these excellent videos.

Here in Oregon, we don't have nearly as much hardwoods as you, my Canadian neighbor. Have you ever thought about coming down and checking it out? I'm sure you'd love it and you'd be well greeted if you choose to do a fan meet and greet.
