This is a fantastic idea for a basecamp for an extended trip, say three or more nights. This type of setup can keep "the young of spirit" visiting the wilderness we so love, without feeling that sleeping on the ground is going to be the death of them.

Another fellow was talking about using this for a "spike camp". As he explained it, a spike camp is a camp further up the trail from your base camp. When I tested it out on an overnight ... it was my base camp. Thanks for the visit.

You are spot on mate. I have only had one storm so far in this set up and that was the first thing I thought after. I needed to get the side flaps of the tarp a little lower to protect me from the wind and the rain.

great video, good to see these things haven''t been lost in time, we used to knock these up way way back when I was a scout, things you remember nearly 50 years on ..

The first time I did this for the group there were many doubts. I already knew the project was sound so when I finished it felt good to see the amazement on their faces. I love how open it is compared to a tent!

Great video! However, there were some gaps --- didn't quite get how you wrapped the green nylon sheet around the poles so securely? BTW, Thank you for adding English subtitles, as a Deaf viewer, it's so appreciated!! ,
@EconoChallenge11 жыл бұрын
Wow. I am glad someone appreciated the extra work with the subtitles. Awesome. Made my day. As for you question about the bed. It is a tube of fabric that I sew together. An alternate idea would be to sew smaller tubes on both sides to hold the bed rails. However I think that would be more difficult to work with. I like the one big tube. That way I don't have to worry that the bed rails are too thick to fit into the tubes. My way they always fit.

@RDPproject You have a keen eye for detail Rob. I like that. Yes the legs move. I am glad you mentioned it because a few viewers swear the legs must be anchored in the ground. They move in the update video also. The project in the SAS manual instructs you to sharpen the ends and drive them into the ground. It falls over. Add longer uprights and the cross beam and you don't have to anchor the legs. Thanks Rob.

@Woodenarrows Ah you see the beauty we see in the simplicity. Now we need to find out if it will last the night. The little screen house I demonstrated earlier this summer will fit over the bed. Jeep, awesome awesome awesome inspirational video. That is absolutely the coolest shelter I have seen on KZbin. Down here in Southern California we don't have the sturdy downed wood that you guys have so it wouldn't be an option here but I just think it is so cool that you get both a bed and a nice overhang for your tarp. Very cool. Looks like you have hit the time of year where the bugs have gone away as well. Stay warm this winter friend!
@oldguy53713 жыл бұрын
@EconoChallenge here in Australia scouts were for early teens, just about every weekend was spent out hiking,camping and rock climbing, kept you out of trouble, and yes I owe a lot those who gave their time to pass on their bushcrafting skills, thanks for the reply and your videos , great stuff ..
@Ficktao11 жыл бұрын
Looks comfy! If you widen the A-frame a bit more, the bed can go up higher and you could arrange the tarp in a way it more encloses you. The way you have it now allows for to much much wind.
@EconoChallenge12 жыл бұрын
Some very good points. Thank you. I will give it some thought. I do have the tendency to get off on rants when I find stuff left behind in the wild. Hard to edit it all out. LOL.

Most impressive! I want to make one right now. Maybe an open mesh net could be subbed for the tube of rip stop with some weight savings if it was strong enough. But the tube looks hassle free. Warm weather luxury sleeping above the ants!

I am working on make one that two can enjoy. One of my winter projects. I am using Nylon taffeta. It is similar to wind breaker jacket material. Very light but strong. A big man might want to go with a little heavier rip stop nylon fabric for more durability. You certainly would not need anything as strong as canvas.

In my experience, strong netting weighs more than the nylon rain jacket material we are using now. Plus you want the wind barrier in the colder temps. Love getting off the ground in this. I certainly will be using it a lot more this coming summer.

Yes. I find that it is more than I need and weighs a little more. However ... time will tell if rip stop is a better idea for the long term. Does that help?

I had my first night in it this year. Had a great night sleep. The side rails are closer than I would like. Could be cool to figure out how to make it a double. I used something similar a long time ago. Scout camp, not enough tents and no level ground to put one. Built a tripod with a cross bar, ran side rails out to a bank stretched some sacks over the rails. Played with variables until my bed was level, added a ridge pole and a tarp. slept better than most. Bottom line is you can do it with one less tripod.
